Choose between speed (km/h) or pace (min/km) on an activity

There are lots of walkers/runners who don't want to see min/km because km/h is all we know from our daily lives! I don't want to have to record my exercise as a cycle ride, especially when the stats will appear ridiculously low for a ride.

Would it be possible to set the speed/pace display as a toggle in the settings screen, and de-couple it from the sport? This is especially useful on app displays.

  • This is a solution: click on your profile photo > settings (at bottom) > display > select " metric" .

  • for windsurfing, Strava recently changed to Nautical Miles instead of kilometers. It is possible to return to kilometers??

  • Pieter, Thanks!

I changed the script a little to run in Dutch interface, an easy task.

But I would also like to see the average speed on my cycling activities on the dashboard.

Can you tell us how we could accomplish that? I would say, use the distance and time for calculating that, but I don't know how to do that...

  • @Nele, sorry for the late reply. As this is a userscript (a simple script running in a browser) it won't work in any app.
@Marcel, I'll take a look this weekend to see if it's feasible. :)

  • Hmmm.

Might just switch back to RunKeeper if this is to hard for Strava to fix.

  • This thread has been started in 2015. We are in July 2018 and , unless I'm wrong, I couldn't find the option either, and am still forced to use pace instead of speed.
Is it a premium option or is there still no option at all? What are you waiting for strava, it seems so easy to add this feature.

  • To be honest, I don't think Strava gives a shit about what their users want....

It's actually not that easy. It involves multiplication and division, two very new and complex mathematical operations that are not yet implemented in the processors that power Strava's servers.

This barrier will be overcome one day though, but then they will need support for these new instructions from their operating system and programming language.

And only then, will they be able to focus on finding and hiring the great mind who will be able to implement this algorithm.

OR, they don't care what you think or need.

  • The fix is simple. Do not use walk or hike. All my walks are therefore recorded as rides. km/h I understand. Mins/km mean nothing. STRAVA please give us this option

  • I switched from Runkeeper to Strava because most of my friends are on here, but Runkeeper had speed (km/h) option and much more, like a voice telling your kms and speed while running!
I'm just baffled Strava is the most popular one. :'(
I hate it when marketing succeed popularity prior to functionality or quality. Kudos to Runkeeper. Bad karma to Strava keepers.

  • Would be very useful to have an option to choose between pace (min/km) and speed (km/h) or even both at the same time, including graphs and analysis.

How come this is not yet implemented?

  • I usually don't complain and don't comment much, but after today official answer something was triggered. I work in the software industry for almost 15 years and I know what they are talking about: about priorities and what is the opinion of product managers about features.

But not for this request! This is a no brainer: not only easy to implement (unless the code is a really really a mess, in case the product will gradually degrade) , but also is what I think a primary function. We are talking about the main indicator of all (speed) and we are talking about perception. Is like having the option to switch between imperial and metric. We just need to "see" our performance without having to calculate it.

For me Strava is not my primary app as I don't have the trust in the team.

  • This problem, that needs almost no effort and thus Strava's official answer proving there is no interest in listening to users, together with the fact that you can't hear anything while running, makes me go back to Runkeeper.
I have a lot more friends on Strava, but that's probably because their marketing is better; the product is worse (in many aspects).
Thanks so far, Strava, but goodbye.

  • I wouldn't exactly call this a 'feature', more a 'setting'. While I understand that app developers should be very selective with features, I fail to see why this should be the same for settings, which don't stand in the way of the overall UX experience.

  • There is no reaction from strava because people use pace per mile or kilometre for running and kilometres or miles per hour for cycling. Anyone who does otherwise is an IDIOT

  • Was thinking the same Cyclic Duelist.

Installing my new phone now, Strava will not be installed on that device.

I am not an idiot. I am not a runner. I am a 60+ person who has always thought in km/h, never in mins/km. I respect that people seriously into running may prefer mins/km, but please don;t label us as idiots. Many of us only think in km/h, in my case since we went metric in AU over 40 years ago. Since I cannot think in mins/km I now record my walks as rides, using HIKING BOOTS as the bike type. Clumsy and irritating, but the only way to get units I know and understand.

  • i just realize that strava has been deaf for 1003 days

only after posting it on their Facebook, they realized that they had a forum

where they can feel the pulse of their community

this kind of follow up is a legendary example of customer contact management

  • I'm a bit disappointed by the official response. This is a very easy to implement feature and has been requested for at least 3 years.

  • I moved from Runkeeper to Strava, Just because Runkeeper removed the km/h setting ( or its broken).
Now I'm surprised to see that Strava does not have this straightforward feature at all!

I thought Strava had the most alive community and Dev of all sports trackers, but it seems there is no progress here.

  • I'll never upgrade to Pro version until you solve this. Furthermore, I'm looking to another app for logging my activities to kiss Strava good bye.

  • Hi Strava and all the interested people,

Strava, I can't help but see, that there is no listening to the customers. Neither can I see a reason, to move from my watch's software to strava. So there you are, no money from me, in the current state. And that is all you're interested in, aren't you?

My watch software throws my activities into Strava automatically and it allows me to kudo my friends. You have only that going for you.

So, if you think, that people inscribe to Strava for the quality of the software, you get it wrong.

Thanks anyway, I met a couple of nice people through Strava, all from work, but we're exchanging activities and even run together every now and then.

  • I was surprised and disappointed at the unhelpful Strava official response. It is obvious that the option to see speed for activities other than cycling is important to many people, surely this cannot be too difficult to implement. I am a 71 year old walker who attempts to keep fit by walking at a target speed, I will have to look elsewhere for a suitable tracking app.

  • Strava, seriously this is a no-brainer...it's a simple toggle in setting or on the activity page. Right now, I have to edit the activity type from Nordic skiing to back country skiing to see a simple stat like my max speed. Ridiculous not to implement such a simple feature.

  • Strava, don't even send me your ads and offers trying to convince me to upgrade to the paid account. I won't do it until you at least implement this feature. I'm kayaker and SUP boarder, not interested in pace tracking at all.

  • Have the same issue - ocean sport is only nautical miles... Vote with your feet gents, the app crashes on the apple watch anyway and drains the battery. Heaps of alternatives around.

  • Switched from Runkeeper to Strava for running to have my bike and run sessions in one app. Not having the option to change from pace (min/km) to speed (km/h) will make me switch back to Runkeeper and is definitely the reason for me not to upgrade.

So please, put this feature higher on the priority list... 4 years after this thread was started and still nothing changed.

  • My Garmin app allows the switch from min/km to km/h, min/km means nothing to me, how many people have to request this and for how long b4 its taken seriously  ??
