Hide Commutes from the Activity Feed but still count towards my stats

I would like this feature because nobody is interested in my twice daily commute, except me. I would still like it to count towards my total mileage and if I happen to do well on a segment then that should register too. Currently, if I mark a ride as private then segments don't count which seems unfair.

Alternatively maybe somewhere in the Strava settings there could be a "Hide other people's commutes" option?

  • So Strava - How many more people do we need to get to comment for Strava to make a small update to their next release. What was the purpose of adding a commute button in the first place if it wasn't for this?  Everybody has the same issue and wants the same solution.

  • Please implement this, people dont care about commutes.  I dont want to see them in my feed at all, I just want the miles.  I'm a programmer, maybe I could assist.

  • To clarify....Rides set to Private DO count towards personal milage tally and PRs but are NOT eligible for challenges and leader boards etc (makes sense). That's what I notice at the moment.

Would like to be able to hide my commutes so I don't spam my friends

  • New to commuting, realised after 2 days this is going to become annoying to people following me. Just read all the comments, doesn't look like strava is in a rush to even comment on this so not holding much hope.

  • Wow, just came looking to see if there was an option for this, since have a few followers now, and feel for them with my daily commutes!

Come on Strava devs, this is a simple enough tweak to one or two queries at best surely?!

Hell, send me the SQL and schema and I'll do it for you!

I thought we were slow sometimes with client requests for our software, but 5 years for something so obvious is beyond a joke!

Tell me, what does the commute button do, exactly?

  • agree. please fix this. just put an option to not show commute rides. that's all. with this all the stats can still count on leaderboards.

I wish to make my bike commuting still count towards metro heatmaps so cities can use it for planning, but don't want to bore people with repetitive activities.

Could be solved by allowing me to specify to allow for metro but private to others, or allow people to hike things labeled commute from their feed (as mentioned earlier in here)

  • Same issue for me. Could someone from Strava please respond with an update?

  • All,

I totally agree this should be a standard feature and have upvoted this.

However for those who dont know there is a great app out there called commute marker. In the strava app store and completely free. You give the start and end points of your commute and it automatically tags them for you. It also optionally marks them as private. Hope this helps someone!!

  • Do you mean this? http://commutemarker.com/

Not familiar with the Strava App Store, sorry.

  • Yep that’s the one. Strava call them apps on their desktop version. Find the app via strava.com think its in your profile section, you have to give them permission to edit routes within your account and away you go.
Been using it for a few months now with no problems.

  • Hi Andy - so i logged into strava on my desk top - went into apps and found  the commutemarker.com  - went into settings 'make my commute private on strava ' and checked the box.  Are you telling me it should now hide my commutes from people who are following me... (because thats pretty boring for them) but still count towards my total stats on Strava ?

If so isn't that what everyone is looking for ?   ie THE SOLUTION ?!

  • It is a solution that totally works! Make sure you set the start and end points for your commute mind.

It is a however a third party solution that people don’t know about. I think people would like it as an official feature but meanwhile it does work perfectly well if you know about it!

  • Commute marker is great but it doesn't address the issue on this thread. I use commute marker to mark all my commutes - now I want strava to give my friends the option to hide them from their feed so I don't feel like I'm spamming them.

I dont want to make my commutes private because I want them to count towards segments and challenges.

  • Same request here. I still want the mileage to count but don’t want short rides to clog up friends’ feeds twice per day. Surely this is an obvious change now Strava is trying to be more of a social network?

  • thanks for the post Andy! Agree with Kevin and the others on the fact that it would be nice to have commutes count towards goals, did not know marking them private blocks this function. Maybe just make it so private rides still count towards segments + challenges, why wouldn't they?

  • I found a way to get past this on strava desktop go to "add manual entry" and then upload how many kms you rode, time it took and elevation I recommend recording your commute once to get the required information and then uploading manually the only disadvantage is that you won't get on segment leaderboards but it means no one can see the mini map of your route it just adds to your kms

  • I see some of you seem to be thinking the commute marker has no function. Far from it! You have all been meticulously marking your commutes so that the data Strava collects and then sells will have greater accuracy. Read here about Strava's business model:

    https://medium.com/bestcompany/how-strava-makes-money-amazes-me-92ae7bfdc633

This is why there has been virtually no development of the platform over the last five years. The business model is not really about developing the best training app for you. It's about selling the data you have collected for them.

  • What happened to implementing this option?

  • +1 nobody wants feed full of default commutes repeating every day, but we still want segments and flybys etc.

Hide them from feed unless they have a comment or non default name or something. If followers want to see commutes they can look directly at profile. If someones commute is exciting (new PR etc) then they will give it a non default name like "fast run to work today!".

  • Yeah, time to implement something like this, a couple of years since the discussion was begun now :)

  • I'm sure no one wants to see the same commute everyday from me so I'd love to stop clogging up other peoples feed with my commutes.
