Hide Commutes from the Activity Feed but still count towards my stats

I would like this feature because nobody is interested in my twice daily commute, except me. I would still like it to count towards my total mileage and if I happen to do well on a segment then that should register too. Currently, if I mark a ride as private then segments don't count which seems unfair.

Alternatively maybe somewhere in the Strava settings there could be a "Hide other people's commutes" option?

  • I like the above idea. Maybe have a "Publish to feed" tickbox that is defaulted to yes usually that we could toggle off?

So many ways to fix this they are spoilt for choice!

  • They don't even need to be private, simply don't show in the feed.
It's a simple client side filter, if commute flag set then don't show in homescreen feed unless it has a non default description or a comment.

  • Is the commute tag even used for anything right now? This would be a great feature, commute activities are really not that interesting. We should have the option whether to show activities that we have tagged as commutes on our follower's feeds.

Edit: Seems like people have been asking for this since 2012 (5 years!).

  • Commute marker is great but it doesn't address the issue on this thread. I use commute marker to mark all my commutes - now I want strava to give my friends the option to hide them from their feed so I don't feel like I'm spamming them.

I dont want to make my commutes private because I want them to count towards segments and challenges.

  • +1 nobody wants feed full of default commutes repeating every day, but we still want segments and flybys etc.

Hide them from feed unless they have a comment or non default name or something. If followers want to see commutes they can look directly at profile. If someones commute is exciting (new PR etc) then they will give it a non default name like "fast run to work today!".

  • Please implement this, people dont care about commutes.  I dont want to see them in my feed at all, I just want the miles.  I'm a programmer, maybe I could assist.

  • New to commuting, realised after 2 days this is going to become annoying to people following me. Just read all the comments, doesn't look like strava is in a rush to even comment on this so not holding much hope.

  • Wow, just came looking to see if there was an option for this, since have a few followers now, and feel for them with my daily commutes!

Come on Strava devs, this is a simple enough tweak to one or two queries at best surely?!

Hell, send me the SQL and schema and I'll do it for you!

I thought we were slow sometimes with client requests for our software, but 5 years for something so obvious is beyond a joke!

Tell me, what does the commute button do, exactly?

  • Same request here. I still want the mileage to count but don’t want short rides to clog up friends’ feeds twice per day. Surely this is an obvious change now Strava is trying to be more of a social network?

  • thanks for the post Andy! Agree with Kevin and the others on the fact that it would be nice to have commutes count towards goals, did not know marking them private blocks this function. Maybe just make it so private rides still count towards segments + challenges, why wouldn't they?

  • I'm sure no one wants to see the same commute everyday from me so I'd love to stop clogging up other peoples feed with my commutes.

  • Come on devs, I totally support this feature to be implemented as I don't want to bore everybody with my couple of daily commutes.

    Please consider this request.

  • I've just given up using Strava for commutes now. Really frustrating that this hasn't been fixed yet.

  • @Duncan: We don't want to make our commutes private because then they wouldn't appear in some of the stats and in the public segments. We only want to hide them from the activity feeds of others.

  • To clarify....Rides set to Private DO count towards personal milage tally and PRs but are NOT eligible for challenges and leader boards etc (makes sense). That's what I notice at the moment.

  • I see some of you seem to be thinking the commute marker has no function. Far from it! You have all been meticulously marking your commutes so that the data Strava collects and then sells will have greater accuracy. Read here about Strava's business model:

    https://medium.com/bestcompany/how-strava-makes-money-amazes-me-92ae7bfdc633

This is why there has been virtually no development of the platform over the last five years. The business model is not really about developing the best training app for you. It's about selling the data you have collected for them.

  • Yes please. Would be uploading a lot more if I knew this was handled sensitively in other feeds

  • I would also like to have this option where you can mark your activities as private and yet still make them count towards the monthly/yearly stats and challenges. This way we can hide the commutes from polluting other people's feeds and yet keep recording and riding towards the monthly challenges.

  • I would appreciate a Hide from Feed option for my commutes too. Even better, it would be nice if there was also an option to show a concise, monthly summary of my commutes to my feed. It's discouraging that the app annoys followers and yourself with friction around showing your bike commutes, which could instead be encouraged by turning down the noise in the feeds enough for it to be a nice occasional thing to see.

  • Completely agree. I have lost countless commuting miles as i do not want to clog up people's feeds. I would really like these miles to contribute to my total, and for these segments to show on leader boards, but just not on everyone's feeds.

Please take note and rectify this issue. And please also give us all an update on the issue.

  • #FilterCommuteFeed

What real function does the ‘Commute’ button serve? When it was introduced I presumed it would be so one could hide the repetitive rides from other people’s feeds as I can think of no other use for it.

Not being able to hide this from my friends feeds has lead to indifference on their part towards kudos feedback, and low esteem and depression on my part as I am now unpopular (😭). This stimulus-reward aspect is important in social media and Strava shouldn’t ignore it.

My commute doesn’t especially deserve Kudos (unless it is snowing) and I feel guilty when someone feels obliged to add one out of loyalty and unpopular when people just ignore it. WTF!

I now can’t be bothered to mark a ride as a commute as it makes no difference.

I have cancelled my premium membership.
