Hide Commutes from the Activity Feed but still count towards my stats

I would like this feature because nobody is interested in my twice daily commute, except me. I would still like it to count towards my total mileage and if I happen to do well on a segment then that should register too. Currently, if I mark a ride as private then segments don't count which seems unfair.

Alternatively maybe somewhere in the Strava settings there could be a "Hide other people's commutes" option?

  • This is still a good idea, not that they'll ever implement it. :\

  • This is still an awesome idea. There’s the Commute button which is nice, but having the option to make all Commute data private would be 👌👌

  • Just to up the vote count on this one. It would be very beneficial to have a privacy setting for "hide commutes." In implementing this option in the privacy settings it would greatly increate user's privacy as well as reduce the spamming of followers.

Currently to hide my commutes in an effective way I have to create a series of privacy circles around both my work and home.

  • Maybe Strava co-founders will listen to its users?

  • I record my commutes but just set them to private. Still counts towards annual total I believe.

  • Joe Fattor

They do count towards your own mileage but other users on strava will see only mileage from your public activities

  • Let me echo everybody else's sentiments: Strava, fix this major drawback for your commuters!!!!!!!!!!

  • I don’t know what’s happened, I set my commutes to private and they all recorded and showed in my total mileage. Since the last update it only shows the mileage I post as public. So it’s taken over 400 miles off my total for the year so far! If I make the private ones public then my total starts going up. What’s going on Strava? Why this sudden change?

  • Steve, I noticed the exact same issue after the last update and emailed Strava about it. You can fix this by logging in to the website, going to "My Profile" then find your stats down the right hand side of the page and click the "Refresh Stats" button below it.

This fixed it for me. Seems like Strava didn't purposely make any changes to this area, yet the update somehow caused a problem.

  • It’s fixed for me too. I didn’t do anything, just noticed yesterday my total mileage was back to what it should be. Phew!

  • Don't let Strava think this thread is fixed. The real issue/wish (have a setting for hiding commute rides of others in my feed) is not fixed. I don't understand why this was not in the last update.

  • Given that Strava still hasn't fixed this I've stopped logging my commutes on Strava. Let me know when you finally fix this Strava and i might be back.

Of course this solution doesn't work for everyone.

  • In response to Travis: Strava has a commute field, but this is separate from making rides private. I wouldn't want my super short mile-plus commutes to the bus and back to show, but I would like for my 20-mile commutes on my bike (when I don't ride the bus) to show.

In my mind, in the privacy settings, there should be a selection along the lines of "Make Public But Don't Show On Feed", so it would allow anybody who's bored out of their skull to review my tiny commutes if they want to, but not annoy my friends on the Feed.

  • I found a way to get past this on strava desktop go to "add manual entry" and then upload how many kms you rode, time it took and elevation I recommend recording your commute once to get the required information and then uploading manually the only disadvantage is that you won't get on segment leaderboards but it means no one can see the mini map of your route it just adds to your kms

  • Yeah it makes no sense. I only know a small amount about programming and databases etc but surely it would be so simple for Strava to add an optional "commute" field to each activity record and then allow users to filter that out of their feed, while still allowing that activity to count towards segments and challenges. It really seems like it would be such a simple thing to add. It's ridiculous that this thread has been open for FIVE years and it hasn't been done.

  • This is crazy - such an obvious and easy to implement feature.

New checkbox under Settings >> Privacy Controls called "Make Commutes Private by default"

If checked - commutes are flagged as Private by default, but user has the option o override when saving an activity.  Would mean that the Commute button actually does something useful...

    Come on.

  • Thanks for your feedback, folks! There are no immediate plans to implement this, but if I get an update I'll post here!
