Can there be a "Dark mode" screen background option?

Currently the new live view has a light background, supposedly for better sunlight visibility, however I imagine an inverted view may be better in some lighting situations, and would obviously save battery usage. Can this be a user option with the default being the light background?

  • I want the dark background back for running and riding at night.

The bright screen is blinding to look at while riding at night.

Turning it DIM after any time is not what I am looking for.

I want white letters on grey or black background.

    thank you

  • Agreed, I have eye issues and my eyes are much happier looking at a dark background with white text than they are looking at a blindingly white background (regardless of how dim/bright my screen is).

  • Given the battery life of an iPhone I would hope you could make this a toggle option in the settings.

White background & black text or Black background & white text.

When using this for run routing on a mobile phone, it saps the battery unnecessarily.

    thanks.

  • this is a very unpopular topic - or other issues outweigh this by a lot.

Sad too - i was hoping this would be fixed - only two respondents.

maybe good reason to use a Garmin

i was hoping to avoid wanting one.

  • I actually like the dimming bright screen for daytime use. It saves battery, and when I want to glance at the screen I just tap the screen and it brightens. This dimming is an option the use can change for each ride. But I had a hard time finding out how to make changes during a ride. I finally figured out I had to tap the stop button. Then I could look at the ride settings and make changes.

However I do agree an option should be made for night mode that inverts the screen color.

  • I absolutely want a dark mode in order to save battery life and the OLED screen from burning itself out trying to fight against bright daylight. Hard to believe the option isn't already there.

  • Hi folks,

A "dark" mode option is something we're exploring. Thanks for adding your feedback!

  • If you're on lollipop you can invert the colours by changing a toggle in accessibility, but I'd like to see an option for this in the app too please! On my phone the screen uses 50% of the battery, I'm getting about 4hrs out of the battery with screen, data and GPS on. Maybe inverting the screen colours would give another hour of use?

  • Have the same observations as Michael Gamet Riding at night is pain in the ass with bright/white screen.

  • With the days getting shorted and nights longer i've switched over to night riding gear.

The white background is painful on the eyes when riding in the dark on the forest preserve trails (EG: no city lights).

  • on iOS at least, a completely inverted color scheme can be invoked by turning on this option in the accessibility area of settings.

Google the instructions..  basically the setting causes a triple-tap of the home button to toggle between inverted and normal color schemes making it easy to

switch back and forth as needed. Whether this would affect longer battery life would need testing...

  • The days are getting shorter here in The Netherlands and most of my rides are now in complete darkness. On my Windows Phone the background light can be dimmed, but it still is bright and looking at the screen requires a few seconds of adjusting my eyes back to darkness again. I would very much like a night-mode.

  • Strava, please, please, give the option of a dark mode for riding at night. I use the speed+cadence screen and on low brightness its still way too bright at night my screen is like a streetlight in the early morning bunch ride. (plus on an OLED screen, darkness saves battery). Before every ride, to achieve white on black the procedure is - Settings->Accessibility->Vision->Negative Colours then Settings->Developer Options->Simulate Colour space->Monochromacy. Painful.

  • No need to wait for Strava (you'll wait a long time!)

On an iPhone, triple press the home button to invert colours.

    (i.e. white become black etc.)

Triple press to restore when you're done.

  • Not making the new background/theme optional is absurd. How could you not do that. It's so obvious.

  • 100% agree, the viewer is blinding while riding at night.   Please provide the option of a night time viewer mode.

  • I also have to invert colors in the phone settings before using the app for recording a ride - not the best solution, but saves battery.

  • iPhone users triple click home button to invert colours. Easy peezy! Works a treat..

  • Inverting colors is a great workaround especially with Samsung AMOLED displays that use less power, but it's awkward to say the least. When jumping into other apps as needed, who wants to deal with inverted colors? Please fix this!

  • This has now cost Strava my premium subscription. It's not the fact that this was changed without any sort of thought that this would be bad for some people, or that Strava can do what they want, it's the fact that Strava are not responding to requests from those who are asking for it. I don't expect an apology, All I want in an acknowledgement that they understand.

I like the product but such poor customer service is unacceptable.

Well it's going on two years.  Have you spent the entire time exploring the option or has anyone done any work on it or did y'all just say "F all that, it's too difficult to figure out/too much work to bother with"?

  • Agreed.. a dark mode is fundamental.

A bright white screen is VERY dangerous during autumn and winter. After looking down at Strava on my phone, I'm temporarily blinded and can't see a thing (which is why every decent cycling app or computer has a night mode). I would have thought that given Strava's obsession over 'beacon', they would be very keen to make Strava as safe as possible! And if nothing else, it would help mitigate the law suits resulting from accidents occurring from loss of night vision whilst using Strava.

  • If there was any chance the company listened to anything we had to say about this, It would have been handled two years ago. Not enough users were interested in posting then, and only a comment every few months now.

  • Dear Strava,

Please create an 'Invert colors' / 'Dark mode'!

Dimming is useless in daylight because of its lack of readability due to reflections and subsequently batteries cannot lighten a bright screen long enough!

  • Please make this an option. I love the bright screen during daylight but would love a dark screen night mode for nighttime.

  • Agree with above constructive posts. A Dark mode for using at dusk of night time is a must for safety, as well as the added battery time.. Before the light nights were here I actually used my panobike app as it does have a dark mode selection. Please bring your app up to date to match all the other cycle computers and apps out there.
