Show heart rate data on swim activities

Currently the swim data from the HRM-Swim doesn't display. It would be good to get it on there for suffer score etc.

  • I have just bought a garmin swim HRM just so I will not my lose my fitness / fatigue / relative effort for my swims. Very disappointed to find that the transfer of heart rate data for swims is a long standing issue with Strava. After a few experiments I found I can export to TCX from garmin connect, delete the automatically uploaded swim and replace it by importing the TCX and it does give me the relative effort score. No other detailed heart rate data. Fine - it is the bare minimum I require so will suffice but it is totally rubbish I have to mess about like this on what should be a seamless data transfer.

  • update from yesterday - the TCX export from garmin and imported into Strava worked ok again today to bring through heart rate data - the update to my previous comment is that it isn't just the relative effort score that is available - you can also see the average heart rate for each lap (as pressed on my garmin watch)

  • Tried the "delete and import TCX file" from Garmin workaround...and it works (in that the heart rate data comes over), but two big caveats: 1) like others have noted, the full heart rate data only appears in the app (not the web view), and 2) it then screws up the distance of the swim.

Add me to the list of non-renewers when the time comes. The vast majority (if not all) of the "Summit" services, and Strava generally, seem geared toward making Strava "Facebook for Exercise."  I don't mind some of the sillier social parts of it, but not at the expense of what I originally started using the platform for (actually recording training, getting interesting data insights out of it, etc.).

3+ years of this issue persisting with no real attempt at a solution is ridiculous.

  • Garmin HRM Swim heart rate data works with TrainingPeaks on open water swims.

I would guess that most committed triathletes don’t look to the fitness and freshness data in Strava but rather use another platform like TrainingPeaks, WKO4, Today’s Plan, or other platform. Strava seems to be more about the social connection.

Side note, in June I ran into someone that works for Strava and mentioned this thread and he said, “Oh, those swimmers!”

  • We are on middle 2019 and do not have this functionality :(

  • I wrote to Strava about this yesterday and received the following reply. It's clearly a pro-forma.

This is an issue related to a method of recording heart rate data that Strava is currently unable to parse. We are aware of this issue and working on a resolution. Unfortunately, we do not have a timeline for when the issue will be resolved.

This thread has been open for years. I fail to understand why Strava are deliberately alienating a significant section of their customer base.

  • Strava has maintained the same stance for years now. It's baffling. It is absolutely solvable. Swimming just isn't a part of their roadmap as we all think it should be. Seems like a really short-sighted decision, honestly. At least in SoCal, most of the cyclists I know are triathletes.

  • I've canceled my Summit subscription based on the lack of activity on this issue. This is ridiculous Strava.

  • This will be my last year with summit membership too, although I see this as a Garmin issue more than strava, the fact neither side is willing to budge on this is a bit pants. The strap is actually a bit crap in my opinion as doesn’t add to intensity minutes or show on the daily HR chart on Garmin connect either. Apple actually does a better job and swimming is the one area I miss my Apple Watch!

Training Peaks has issued a statement that it is working with Garmin to be able to bring in the heart rate data from the Garmin branded HRM. Guess my money will be going into that once they’ve got it sussed - much better for useful information to help improve fitness too.

I think it’s about time Strava reaches out to Garmin to get this issue sorted though - 11 pages of comments makes me think it’s a desired enough addition - even for an app that sells itself as running and cycling based.

  • You do realize an application like GoldenCheetah already implements that, right?
And you've been behind at this for what? 4 years now?

  • Donna - I get intensity minutes when I use the strap.

  • Reginald - are you using the Tri or Swim HRM?

I’m using the swim one, been using it for a few weeks now and not once been given intensity minutes for my swims.

Due to the lack of data imported into strava I don’t get my relative effort added for swims either, the o my way I can see to get it is to upload the TCX file for heart rate Info only (as pace data is pants on that) and leave the FIT file for the numbers data. Training peaks manages to use some of the data provided to bring in average and max heart rates and does give a rTSS score so my fitness, fatigue and form scores at least update for swim as well as my runs.

  • Could someone at Strava explain why we aren't getting heart rate data added to our Premium membership? I'm at the point where I wonder if I need to keep paying for this when my swim work outs aren't recording my heart rate and suck factor.

  • Here's something interesting.

As I said before, a program like GoldenCheetah has no problem understanding the *.fit file coming out of Garmin Connect.

What's more interesting is that when I export the swim activity from GoldenCheetah to a *.fit file, you still have problems understanding it (It appears differently than the original automatic export from Garmin Connect)

  • @Strava
As times goes by ... first request to show heart rate data on swim activities is from November 2015, i.e. almost 4 years (!) and ...
it still not present and, even worse, no reaction from your side here!

Now my reaction is to cancel my Summit membership (at least) in order to spend my money on an other platform.

    Ciao

  • I just figured out that you can download the .tgx (?) file and upload it here, which imports the heart rate data. However, and this is frustrating, it was 100 yards shy of what automatically downloaded from Garmin. And there’s no way to correct the distance. Why is this???? I was 2800 yards, and it comes up as 2700 yards. That’s kinda odd to say the least.

  • It took a while but at least we now get HR in our swim workouts! I haven't seen what it looks like in Summit yet but I'm happy to see average HR in my swim sets from my last workout. Thanks for finally implementing this function.

  • Finally!!!  :)  I've been following this thread for almost three years now and receiving all the negative comments.  This should not have taken sooooooo long.  Will try it out next swim workout.

  • UN BE LIE VA BLE

Strava, you pulled it off - a mere what? Two years? Three years? But it is happening! I am seeing a relative effort on today's pool swim, what amazing times we are living in.

I wonder whether my Fitness/Freshness graph will now be retroactively changed due to all the swim workouts - time to investigate. For now: Good job, Strava.

  • It doesn't seem to work for e.g. Coros Apex. Did Strava just a fix for the Garmin chest strap?

  • I feel like I'm going to cry :)

    Congrats. And well done.

Question though. When the swim automatically uploads from my Garmin, I only see the "new" view that would be available in the new "Laps" section. Only that, no graphs for heart rate and pace.

When I deleted the workout and manually re-uploaded the *.fit file (Exported from Garmin Connect), I'd see the graphs in the "Overview" section, and the "Laps" section.

  • It works on my Garmin Forerunner 920XT with Garmin Swim HRM - so although it now reveals how poor my swimming efforts are at least I'm not being recorded as 'Resting' - that was always more annoying than losing out the suffer / relative effort score (turns out they would have been quite low despite how it felt) at the time  - many thanks - no more excuses to skip the swim
