Remove outliers from recent segment efforts

You should be able to remove segment times from the Recent Efforts graph for segments. I regularly ride a 10 minute climb, one time a race rode up there so I spent 40 minutes waiting and watching them come past, now I can't see the difference in all my other climbs.

You're correct Andrew, and sorry for the misinformation to you and Joe. That is correct, our support team here at Strava is not able to manually remove an effort in order to improve the readability of your Recent Efforts graph.

That simply means there is no short-term fix available for this issue. We will take your feedback and share it with the engineering team in hopes of finding a more permanent solution in the future. Thanks.

  • I have the same issue. I stopped on my commute to pick up groceries once & destroyed the most interesting segment of my commute.

  • +1 sometimes you have/want to stop on a segment and it really messes things up.

  • +1 This exactly

  • I would be willing to do this manually, perhaps levering an existing feature like tagging? "dont-segment" for the whole ride, or something?

  • Agreed.  I had a flat tire on one of my regular uphills and now the range of actual climbs is a virtually flat line.

  • That is absolutely, painfully true!

Recently I came up with a main title for the function:

"I did not ride that segment"

It should be per segment, unmatch your selected ride on a single segment. It would have multiple uses! Like false result positions: sometimes it's a mismatch due to nearby segment, sometimes it's road right next to a trail.

But this personal graphing is annoying, I've also stopped to take photos or chat with someone and then all the 400 other straight rides are on the same level.

    I have similar issues :/

  • +1 Had to stop because of a puncture, now the personal effort graph is useless...

My grand-parents house is in the middle of a segment, so when I visit them on the way back home, I basically know on strava how long I stayed… (now when I leave I try another street to avoid completing the segment… bummer)

  • Come on Strava... this would be an easy fix.   At the simplest level just include a tickbox on the efforts page to remove point outliers... job done!  Bonus points for configurable filtering such as "only show my top 10 efforts" or "best effort each year"

  • Strava should fix this mess. One flat tire incident ruined the scale of the historical chart for a segment which rendered the chart useless.

  • Come on this is silly. Automatically remove the lower quartile results from the graph, or give users the option to manually untrack an effort. Either would be fine, and take so little effort.

This is a deficiency that punishes riders the more they use Strava: as time goes by I'm steadily losing segments to flat tires, road works, shopping stops, etc etc. If I look at my usual rides now there are loads of segments for which the graph is useless.

  • What the fuck is wrong with Strava? This has been an issue for long time. Get your shit together.

  • Hello Strava. This issue was raised back in December 2015. Where are you with this? I'm having too many Recent Efforts graphs with straight lines because some outliers are causing the other historical efforts with similar times to be squeezed into the same plane. No response to this issue in over two years is terrible.

  • Sorry Joe, didn't mean to keep you waiting.

This work isn't currently planned, but I understand the struggle. Our support team can manually remove a segment effort for you if you'd like to reach out to us directly with the info.

  • Elle, with all respect it seems like manually contacting Strava is bad both for users and the company.  It wastes your time, unless you assume very few people will make that effort, and it wastes users' time.

I'm not a programmer, so don't know all that's involved, but this strikes me as a relatively trivial fix especially if you can do it at the back end anyway.  Why not give users the same power that support has to delete manually a segment effort?

Update: When I contacted Strava to make a request of this type as suggested by Elle, I was told that Strava doesn't do this!

Second Update: Elle has corrected this above and explained Strava does not manually delete segment efforts.

  • That's a shame as the "recent efforts" graph is potentially a really useful tool as it can be used to show the overall trend of fitness/times.  However the current situation means that it only takes one bad segment time (eg. puncture repair)  to completely ruin the plot.  As David Richerby points out, the graph becomes "squished" due to the application attempting to include the rouge datapoint in the graph.  What's needed is ether a Zoom function on the graph or the ability to easily mark & remove these rouge times... I don't see why the powers that be can't implement this as a Premium feature.

  • I have worked out that you can temporarily (or permanently if your real keen and not too worried about other stats) change the activity type of activity(s) that have a dodgey segment to remove it from the graph.

Be good if the legends at Strava could add a remove outliers feature though.

  • Come on Strava!!! We should be able to manually remove efforts that distort the scale of recent efforts graph.
