  • I had thought this was in the pipeline from a previous Strava comment, and was close to being worked on....that was awhile ago.  It's embarrassing that this hasn't been done yet, when your competitors have all gotten it right.  Seems like an opportunity to continue to grow your user base....instead of frustrating your existing user base. For what it's worth, I agree with Jonas on the categories:

    • XC skiing classic
    • XC skiing skate (all existing Nordic Skiing & Cross Country activities migrated to this category by default)
    • Rollerski classic
    • Rollerski skate

  • It has been 1330 days since this started, and still nothing has happened. A new seasons starts soon, and I, in my naive positive mind, hope that this will be the season where we can finally have a distinction between classic and skate.

    So therefore...bump...

  • Ditto. This is getting ridiculous. Clearly there is a quorum in the user base that a fix is needed, and Strava has also agreed...yet no action nor communication. I expect better.

  • No need to worry. Garmin Connect have improved their service considerably. Garmin have options for classic & skate. They also have KOM equivalents & leaderboards. It's a simple matter to migrate all activities from Strava.

  • Although this project has not yet been chosen for consideration, I wanted to let folks know that we have started work on this request:

Combine Nordic Skiing and Cross Country Skiing Activities

  • I'm new to the sport of XC skiing and was shocked to see XC/Nordic skiing as a single category and not separated into skate and classic. +1 to the below.

    • XC/Nordic skiing classic
    • XC/Nordic skiing skate
    • Rollerski classic
    • Rollerski skate

  • Welcome to the frustration zone Jeff.

    Winter is coming.

I am all for the principal that when you miss something, you are free to go look for it elsewhere. It's just that as Strava has many good features, it tears me apart that they cannot fix such a small issue for its users.

  • LOL, all these comments and after four years still no distinction between XC classic and XC skate.  If it hasn't happened by now it probably isn't going to happen......

Coincidentally, there may be a few segments where classic is faster than skate, such as a particular segment at a local park that has two sets of classic tracks and not enough width for skating.  May be other uphill segments where classic is faster than skate.

Just thinking out loud here, maybe the Strava people don't really care how a segment is set?  Kind of like, if someone wants to set KOM on a MTB trail while riding their 'cross bike on the trail, or someone is strong enough to set KOM on the road riding their MTB.  We don't have KOM and segments for commuter bike with fenders and lights, unicycle, race bike, tri-geek bike, etc.  Maybe that's why Strava doesn't see the distinction and won't separate the activities?

  • Thanks Charles, I think this is a fair assessment. There has been feedback around cycling segments similar to this, with requests to filter segments by bike type - mtb, road, cyclocross, etc. In this respect, a filter for nordic skiing segments could work similarly to differentiate between types of skiing and equipment used.

However, at this time we don't have plans to create such a segment feature for cycling segments or skiing segments. If and when we get to that point, we could easily implement similar versions of this feature for both activity types.

Happy new year and happy skiing,

    -Elle

  • Hi Elle, thanks for sharing some reasoning behind the long inaction.  I'm not so concerned with skate  vs. classic, but what really gets me is the inability to see segments on the map and see KOMs in your list.  This is part of the core of Strava and I don't understand why skiing isn't visible in that regard.  There is no way of seeing or finding Nordic segments without first having done them.

  • Hi Aaron, thanks and we hear you. In the big picture, we've chosen to focus our efforts mainly on cycling and running so our feature sets for other activities have not been fully fleshed out. We're certainly aware that our members enjoy other activities and that further development in these areas would be worthwhile. With our (still) fairly small team we do as much as we can to put out new features, however prioritizing our most popular activities is important to us. Thanks again for sharing the feedback and I hope we can accommodate this suggestion in the future!

  • It seems that key element in stravas response is that stravas main focus in on cycling. Well guess what strava? Many of us cyclist cannof or will not cycle in the winter so xc skiing is indeed very popular with cyclists. Tad Elliott, a professional cyclist, actually won 30k freestyle race and the national championship last week. Ur focus should not be on a sport but on the people who are passionate about the sport and everything else about it.

  • Nordic ski is two activity types: Classic and skate. My hope is that you can have the both of them in activity type. The old activity could follow the "Nordic ski skate", and a new activity type "Nordic ski classic" would be a great thing for me and very very many skiers!

(Today it is only: "Nordic ski" activity type in strava)

  • I'm so fed up with Strava and it's easy to see amongst my friends that they spend less time here now than a couple of years ago.

Reason I found it worthwhile to login today was that now that the nordic skiing season has started, the analogy of pairing classic and skate/freestyle with trotting and galloping for horses came so easily to mind.

It's really intelligent and informative to compare two horses time around a track when the one is allowed to gallop and the other is forced to trot. And how complicated it would be to separate these two in any structured database!

Strava, any comment on how you plan to act on this topic coming winter season?

  • Erik, Strava made it quite clear that they are not interested in supporting the Cross-Country community:

In the big picture, we've chosen to focus our efforts mainly on cycling and running so our feature sets for other activities have not been fully fleshed out.

It's a pity, and I hope they will change their mind one day, but until then I just use their free subscription and VeloViewer premium to get proper reports on my activities. And Garmin Connect supports Classic/Skating a little bit better, in case you are a customer of that brand.

Until then we have to live with the insight that endurance-categories like wight lifting or Yoga are more important to Strava...

  • I agree that Nordic ski is to general a term and needs to be broken out to a few baser elements. Another form of Nordic ski that is not being recognised it Telemak skiing.

Nordic Ski should be replaced with:

    Skate Ski

    Classic Ski

    Telemark Ski

  • I don't believe this will be implemented, because in this case somebody will come with a similar request for swimming, running,... In case there are no segments for these categories, then it doesn't makes sense to have it so granular.

    • Nordic ski skate
    • Rollerski classic
    • Rollerski skate

  • @RomanPriesol. That's a valid point.  What I don't get is why there are Nordic skiing segments AND leaderboards, but they are INVISIBLE!

STRAVA:  make Nordic Skiing segments viewable just like running and biking.  I personally don't care about separating the different styles, but segments are the core of what Strava is!

  • I've changed my thinking, I agree with the Strava staff.  There is no need for the distinction.  Yes, skate skis are generally faster, but not always.  What does it really accomplish to add further granularity via equipment type?

Analogy here is a road bike is faster on the road than a MTB, duh!  And a MTB is faster than a road bike on the trail, duh!  Furthermore, a full suspension MTB will be faster on gnarly downhill segments than a hardtail, but a hardtail will be faster on the climbs.  And a unicycle will be slowest of all.....  There aren't all these distinctions for riding, just "Ride" so why make the distinction for skiing.  It's kind of the same situation.

Though if you're hard core enough to ride a unicycle on the trails, maybe you do deserve your own category;)

IMHO, all the separate tags splitting hairs on Garmin Connect are a bit much.  Street running versus trail running versus track running, it's Running.  Same difference for cycling.  It's generally pretty obvious which is a MTB activity, which is a road activity, which is a track activity.  "Ride" like Strava has is quite sufficient.

  • @Charles Moore That is very much what I've been saying since the beginning of this discussion a few years ago. However, IMO we should still be asking for the nordic/crosscountry skiing (and other sports but that is not the topic of this thread) to be recognized as a "category 1" activity equal to cycling and running, with segments, leaderboards,  yearly stats etc.

  • Charles Moore you miss the point entirely. Classic and Skate are different techniques. That's why there are different competitions. That's why the skis are different. (As previously mentioned, skate is formally free style and in extremely rare cases one see skiers competing using classic technique as it's not forbidden, these are often amateurs with no access to skate gear.)

Your bicycle anti-analogy does not work. If I wish to do intervals or grab a few KOM's on road I choose my road bike. If I were to do it on gravel I use my CX. Off road I go with my MTB. So would everyone else. The technique is the same (obviously anyone can argue here about body position etc) but the route is different. When skiing, the route is the same whilst the technique is different. You see the difference?

I was recently on training camp in Norway and my skate poles broke. I wanted to rank up as I felt fresh but couldn't stand a chance even against my own mid-effort activities. Of course there are world cup athletes faster using classic than I am skating, but that's irrelevant - again, skate is a different technique. And way faster in almost all conditions and inclinations.

Segments are mostly what Strava is about and I love it. Unfortunately Strava is not relevant at all when doing classic at this point of time. Hoping for the future!

  • I found it annoying that Nordic Skiing does not have the same metrics as running. I've read enough to know you're not going to spend a lot of time on that, but you should at least break Nordic out into:

    Nordic Skiing Classic

Nordic Skiing Skate (replaces Nordic Skiing)

Seems like an easy enhancement that would reap a lot of benefit to your users.
