Feedback for the Route Builder

Love the new Route Builder feature in Strava Premium. I have only had a quick play on an iPad so far but have a couple of comments. To define a starting location it appears you need to type in an address. It would be great if there was a "use current location" option that drops the pin where you are standing. Keep up the good work guys! Tim

  • Route builder. Has potential. I particularly like seeing the heat map so I know roads that are well traveled and therefore not dirt tracks. HOWEVER HAVING PROBLEMS BUILDING CIRCULAR ROUTES. The route builder just wants to take me there and back. So I'll stick with Google Maps until this is sorted out.

  • Tried this and found it to be as clunky as all the other ones out there.  How so?  First off the waypoints keep slipping off to an adjacent road whether or not the "popularity" switch is toggled off or on.

One feature that could quickly differentiate Strava from other route builders is to use the inherent and unique advantage for Strava and its users of building out routes from exist rides or saving rides as routes.  Don't see this anywhere.  Am I missing something?

  • Clark Smithson,

have you heard if turn by turn will become available ? I experience the same problem: Strava route downloaded to the garmin edge 500 and no turn by turn directions, only the breadcrumb. Other than that I love the ease of use of this tool compared to others.

  • Any chance of adding Open Street Map overlays so you can see trails and details for runs or off-road rides?

  • Annette, I haven't heard anything about turn-by-turn since my original post.  Hopefully it's in the works as I'd say that's the real key to using a route on a Garmin on unfamiliar roads.

  • Thanks, Clark. I used Strava to map the ride just because its wonderful easy and with the heat map overlay. But to get the turn by turn i imported it to ride with gps then moved the way points off and back just to get the turn by turns. I wish Strava would add those soooooooon !

  • I am doing a particular organized ride in May.  The route map is available in GPX form.  I would love to be able to upload that GPX and then have the route builder create a similar route (approximately the same distance and roughly the same elevation profile) starting where I tell it.

  • After building my first route (http://www.strava.com/routes/127434), I have some observations and feature requests:

    1) While building the route, sometimes the route will force a segment change to a segment I don't want. There needs to be better control of that.
    2) I should be able to define a Point A and a Point B, and then mold the route around particular segments just like Google Maps lets you adjust driving routes.
    3) I should be able to define waypoints during the ride with descriptors.
    4) In the view, the map is very small. There should be a way to make this full screen.
    5) In the route view, I also want to see descending stat. Currently you only show a total amount of climbing.
    6) The route should be exportable to a plain GPX file that includes elevation statistics, not just way points.
    7) I should be able to embed any route I've created in a website.

  • Also, I would like to be able to "Clone" any route so that I can adjust it and make it my own.

  • i want to see a total for descending as well as climbing as i ride DH&XC as well as road and what to see how much is descending too.

  • Thanks for creating such an intuitive interface for your route builder.  My first try went quite well, with one exception.  I transferred the tcx file to my Garmin directory, and it was not recognized.  I think the export functionality needs a little work.  Not sure what I am doing wrong because I followed the directions on the export screen quite explicitly.

Hopefully this feedback will help in creating an even better tool.  Definitely better than the toolset in Garmin Connect.  Cheers,

  • I have found that the GPX export for routes does not produce turn-by-turn directions on my Garmin 800. It will create the course overlay which I can easily follow on the Garmin maps, and correctly alerts me when I'm off course, but it does not provide warning of upcoming turns at junctions. And yes, I have correctly switched on route guidance settings on the device. Mapmyride and bikeroutetoaster both work fine!

  • I played with Route Builder today and like the idea if having all my routes generated and stored in Strava.  I currently use bikeroutetoaster whcih is excellent but is somewhat outdated and lacks integration with social sites.    Could you consider the following features when finalising Route Builder for general release:

    - Ability to delete routes

    - Privacy control that allows the user to hide created routes so they do not appear in the feed

    - The ability to add waypoints that can be labeled to include turn directions.  This is very handy for Garmin 500 users.  bikeroutetoaster does this very well.

    Thanks

  • WHY do newly created routes appear in the feed now?   Isn't the "share" button enough to share it -- in other words, if people wanted it shared, they would use that button?  This default behaviour is quite an extreme abuse of user privacy.  Regardless of whether the routes starts or ends in your privacy zone, automatically sharing created routes without the permission of the creator is not cool.  Fix it.

  • To delete routes, when viewing your various routes (My Routes page) click the spanner under the star, delete route is in the drop down options.

I like builder but don't like that routes now appearing in the feed.

  • I really like the route builder, so far.  I've had trouble with moving the data to my Garmin, though the way I tried didn't give me turn notifications.  I would really like it if I could tell it to find me a route of (roughly) X miles from point A to point B, ideally telling it whether I'm looking for flat, rolling, steep, or even a set (rough) amount of climbing/grade.

  • I used route builder today to compare it with a route I made on mapmyride.  The strava route seems much more accurate on distance and elevation gain the mapmyride (I also rode the route today).  Things that I think need improvement have been mentioned previously such as not automatically adding the route to your feed, the ability to delete a route and a "save as" command to copy an existing route.  One thing not mentioned but that I think is critical is being able to access routes on the iphone app and maybe even being able to create routes on your iphone.

  • I wish it worked like this http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ when adding pins. I can't use the route builder if it doesn't follow roads or paths automatically.

  • 1) If I wanted to share my newly created routes I'd click the share button, I DON"T want them to be shared in the feed by default & not be able to stop it happening. If you want to promote your routes feature, do it another way that doesn't infringe on everybody's privacy!

    2) It would also be nice if you could duplicate an existing route. It would come in very handy when your new route contains a large section of an old route, a quick edit & your done.

    3) Sort #1 out ASAP!

  • Please don't share routes by default. If we want to share them then give us an option to do this. Good job I didn't name my route "Calling in with the mistress on my way home from work"! :)

  • I've just realised that routes get shared by default. Some of mine start from my house. Thus worringly affecting my privacy/security. Please make sharing an option.

  • I would have to join the choir here, its a nice app once you get used to the bugs, but would really like to be able to set my routes to private. when I'm planning future routes and working out pros and cons of what I want from my travels I don't want my plans broadcast to everyone I know  :(  Also to open a route, modify then save as a new name should create a new route not overwrite the old route and change the name

  • Sharing created routes by default is not cool.

A lot of times I want to play around and plan routes for a TT league but now everyone knows what I'm planning.

seriously considering cancelling Premium and going to mapmyride.

  • As above from last couple of posters. Sharing as an option please. If planning routes I don't want everyone to see them before the day. May have to plan elsewhere if this can't be implemented....

  • Hi George - Sorry if I've misunderstood your comment, but we do offer a Private setting for Routes at this time. You can make a Route private for as long as you want, then edit and switch it to public for sharing at any time you would like.

You can make a Route private upon saving the route - underneath the box to give your Route a name is a checkbox for "Private". You can also edit any route and select this box after-the-fact, or you can remove the private setting at any time too.

    Hope that helps!

  • When creating a route, the strava route builder  freezes and stops working, making me loose everything that has been created. Why is it freezing? Thanks, Daniel.

  • I just found the delete route button: on the My Routes page and then clicking the wrench icon shows the option.

Would be much simpler to have it on the edit page also. I would have never found it by myself.

  • Is there a way to export elevation data for my route so that I can see it on my Garmin?
