Feedback for the new Group Events feature - Clubs

Today we launched the latest improvement for clubs - Group Events. Clubs can now create and share group rides and runs with club members.

Clubs admins can begin to make use of this new feature right away by adding group rides and runs to their club pages. Events can be one-time or recurring, can have a route associated with them, and are easily shared with others on Strava, as well as via Twitter, Facebook, and email.

This is just the beginning - there are many ways that we can expand on the events feature in the future and we’d love to hear your ideas.  If you have questions, comments or feedback, please post them here!

Even though we might not acknowledge every comment, our product team will be checking in on the feedback posted here and responding when we can. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us!

  • The email that gets sent out needs to be more stand alone. It doesn't allow me to decide if I want to participate on the ride by reading the email. The extra step of going to the website is unnecessary.

It includes the name of the ride and date/time. Should also include meet location, organizer, and maybe a thumbnail of the route map.

Organizer is helpful because it often tells attendees a lot about the ride. A thumbnail of the route map can help make it easier to figure out the route if the title is short (i.e. "Thursday night ride").

  • It may have already been covered, but it would be good if anyone in a 'club' could initiate the ride. Our 'club' is an informal group of guys some who sometimes ride together and sometimes don't/ One of the main reasons we don't all ride together more is because none ever knows when someone else is planning to ride. It would be really nifty if anyone from the 'club' could go in and initiate a ride then all others could opt in or out…?

  • Thanks Nick! There have been others that have requested this as well.

James, great feedback thanks. I like your idea of showing past events!

  • Another email suggestion. In addition to some details about the ride, there should be an "I'm IN" or "RSVP Yes" button right on the email.

The confirmation page could take me to the ride details. Or, it can be something more interesting like a landing page with related info. Segments on this route, discussion page, related challenges ("This ride will complete the Super Mileage Challenge!).

But really, want to avoid having to load an extra webpage on my phone to even decide if I want to go. It's similar to the difference between sending an email about that a comment was made versus putting the text of the comment in the email versus putting a reply link in the email.

  • Not sure where to post this but... one thing I have noticed is that when new people join a Club, their previous week's figures are added into the mix for the Club's standings for the previous week.

So, if someone joins on a Monday or Tuesday or any day as far as I can tell - they can bump the people who were actually already part of the club when the previous week ended from their position in club standings.  That doesn't seem very fair, does it?

I think that club standings should only include a member's activity going forward from the date they joined the club.

  • That's a pretty good point Jenn. I'll certainly pass along your feedback.

  • I'm pretty new to STRAVA- and I love it!  Really a great tool!  I do have one suggestion for an enhancement that you may have considered before.  Would it be possible to integrate audio pacing alerts that will let users gauge how far ahead (or behind) their personal best they are?  It would be really cool to know live time if you're on track, ahead or behind.  I'm thinking a couple of tones every 1/2 mile or so.  For example:. (high)(pause)(Low), where "high" is PB, "Low" is current and "space" is the amount of time you are behind.

Probably too much to ask, but I thought it would be pretty cool. Regardless, I'm hooked for life!  Keep up the great work!

  • Hi Kate,

There's been some chatter about expanding the Club features to include segment challenges for example, but no formal plans yet. You can feel free to vote and/or subscribe to this related forum for updates: https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/23039922-Create-Group-or-Club-Challenges

  • Can you add the ability to put events onto a Google Calendar (and other calendars)?

Ideally, this would be through a calendar subscription so it would always show all of the group rides that I have rsvp'ed to.

There's really no reason I should be transcribing ride information into my calendar.

  • Hi Elle,

I know Strava is mostly for rides and runs, but is it possible to expand the "event types" on a group event similar to the list on manual upload entries? Our club is for a general fitness organization, so it would be great to have that. Also, +1 on the google calendar subscription idea!

  • Is it possible to get the events to show up in my regular calendar? Either by some android/iphone integration with the system-calendar or by some ical/ics export function so I just can subscribe to the club calendar?

  • Aloha,

Would like to know if group events take manual entry as well and if so how have we post an event that would not allow a manual entry?  Looking for a Swim and Triathlon category on these events too.  Any chance of adding those?

    Thank you kindly, MW

  • On the "Upcoming Group Event" section at the top of the club page, it shows a quick summary of the ride + whose going.

Can you update it so it shows the organizer(s) as the first person (and maybe highlight their icon as a reminder) on the list of people who is going?

It's annoying to have to click on the link to see who is organizing and when we glance at this list, it always looks like there is 1 less person going.

  • Group Event integration with your Calendar - noted!

Group Events for other activity types besides rides/runs - will certainly pass this along!

James, thanks for the feedback regarding the organizer and how the display works around who's going.

  • How about a comments section?  Somewhere for RSVPs to says something, such as seting up a carpool.

  • Would it be possible to extend this feature to each user, instead of just clubs?  Say I'm planning on going to ride on Sunday, I could create an event and invite users I follow or who follow me to join me on the ride.  I shouldn't have to create a 'the Jeff club'.  With the lack of private/group messaging, this would allow planned rides with people that you're not part of a club with without having to organize them outside of Strava.

  • Hi Elle,

Thanks for watching this thread so closely. We used the event feature over the weekend - I'd like to add +1 to the request for comments/discussion on the group event.

I also think a notification feature integrated with the mobile app - for riders running late - would be a great idea. I guess it shouldn't have been me, as the organiser, who was late!!!!

  • hi elle, i'd like to suggest the group rides should extend beyond clubs.  it would really make the social part of this media work if people could post upcoming rides and invite anyone to come.  local or even some of the classic rides that people plan once-in-a-life time.  for instance, stelvio, months ahead maybe someone could comment on that segment (?) that they're planning to go next year.  get advise and see who else will be there then.

something like this: mashing up meetup, with couchsurfing and okcupid :-)  but seriously, having seen that there are segments with people on the leaderboards who've done it on their trainer, we really need to encourage stravites to get out more and actually meet

  • Elle,

Your April 14th summary seemed to miss the comments people had made about being able to see/export upcoming events onto e.g. Google Calendar; I'm a +1 for that.

Also +1 for the "tentative"/"maybe" option instead of just "I'm in". e.g. one of the groups I've joined has a ride set for the day after my wife's work's christmas party; whether I go or not depends on how drunk I get. The problem with just having in or not in is that, if no one wants to commit to in, the organiser might just cancel it whereas, if he/she knows some people might turn up, he/she has more information on which to make that decision.

I also like your feedback for the "maybe" option. Thanks!

  • I clicked Leave link accidently for my club at web. Suddenly I am not member anymore. It is so strange to see this design without confirmation which would cause a lot of admin overhead. Please don't allow leave without confirmation!!!

  • Mobile support for clubs would be ideal. Looks like a lot of people want to receive notifications, would also be able to create events from mobile as well

  • Looking to use the feature for weekly races.  Would it be possible to add Catergory 1, 2, 3 and Pro to user profile?  That way we can separate the classes.
