Feedback for the new Group Events feature - Clubs

Today we launched the latest improvement for clubs - Group Events. Clubs can now create and share group rides and runs with club members.

Clubs admins can begin to make use of this new feature right away by adding group rides and runs to their club pages. Events can be one-time or recurring, can have a route associated with them, and are easily shared with others on Strava, as well as via Twitter, Facebook, and email.

This is just the beginning - there are many ways that we can expand on the events feature in the future and we’d love to hear your ideas.  If you have questions, comments or feedback, please post them here!

Even though we might not acknowledge every comment, our product team will be checking in on the feedback posted here and responding when we can. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us!

  • It would also be nice for non-admin members to create rides.  I can see why this wouldn't always be desirable, but for many clubs it's a serious requirement.  Can it be introduced as a setting toggle or something?

  • Mobile App needs access to the Group Events! This is a big downfall.

Also, a feature to export/sync to outlook/google calendar would be useful.

    Cheers,

  • Dear Strava Support

Our riding group started using this great feature recently

our plan is to stop using other types of social media to communicate info about rides, times changes due to weather at late notice etc.

For this to be successful we need full mobile app support for all features, push notifications for any changes to club rides rather than just emails. we really need this on the app please

A comment can be posted on the app but no group event info

Also what happens to one off group event historical info, can it be accessed, would be great to have access to reuse this info, not have to recreate, use as a template for future rides.

Good feature but can be great if fully developed, what improvements are already planned to be introduced?

  • @Elle Anderson,

I assume this thread is no longer checked by you or another Strava moderator?  I'm trying to find the appropriate place to request features for Club Events if that is still possible.

  • awesome feature, i have been thinking how this would be awesome to have on strava or as a separate tool. you could maybe add some kind of "participate in ride" button and  riders percentage of attendance? it would also be awesome to somehow make "visiting ride" when you want to visit some place and ride but you don't know where to ride and and you don't have anyone to ride with...

all in all awesome new feature!

    Cheers,

  • This is great - the boys over in London Cychs are starting to use the group event function. Can you please add the ability to to RSVP yes or no to this as people then can see who and how many are attending the ride. Also a reminder notification 24 hrs before the ride would be helpful. Ability for all members to add comments to an event, not just at a club level will promote interaction. Thanks

  • I appears you need to be creator of the club to post a new activity. It would be nice if there was an admin toggle option to allow members to create activities. As it stands proposing events works well for "well organized" clubs less so for "social groups". I agree with the accept/decline option too.

  • I thought I'd gather together a little summary of what we've seen above for feedback for the Club Events feature. That way it will be easy to add and comment further without having to read through every comment! Please continue to add to this list by commenting below:

    • Group Attendance: This can be said may ways, "Join", "Accept/Decline" button, +1 button, RSVP, "I'm in" button, etc. The gist is to add a button for folks to indicate whether they will participate in the group event, and to show a list of who can make the event. (This is first on our list of features to add!)
    • Notifications: Strava notification or email to remind those who wish to join the Group Event, either 12 or 24 hours in advance.
    • Weather Widget: Add a weather widget with local data to the Events page
    • "Upcoming Events" widget to be used on external sites: Similar to our Club Feed or Athlete Feed widget, a way to bring information about Group Events in your club to other sites such as the Club site.
    • Add a "Meeting Time" field: This would be different from "Start Time" as an option to specify when the Group meets versus when the Group leaves the meeting place.
    • Custom field for "Level/Event Type": Allow for other Event tags besides Casual (no drop), Tempo, and Hammerfest. This would solve the Dutch translation issue with "Tempo" and allow for an entry like "Moderate pace, no waiting".
    • Link to Map for "Meet up Spot": If an address or point of interest is added as the Meet up Spot, this should link to a map of the location
    • Add a Comments section: Separate from a general Club discussion, Group Events comments would allow discussion about the Group Event specifically. Option to be notified of comments if you have joined the Event.
    • Allow any Club member to create an Event: Currently, only club creators and admins can create Group Events
    • Integration into the Strava mobile app: Especially for mobile features such as the "I'm running x minutes late" alert to the group
    • Group Event export: Ability to export the information in the Group Event to a range of formats/uses (PDF, email, etc.)
    • Link to more than one Route per Event: Add an "A" and "B" route, or attach 3 possible routes for the group to choose from.

Keep the ideas and feedback coming! This is already a fantastic list for the Product team to consider adding to the Group Events feature. Thanks!

  • @Andrew - Unfortunately, I cannot provide any information around a timeline. This forum is simply to collect feedback to pass along to the product team :)

Also, are there still any bugs around the date format when creating a new Group Event?

A tip for more social clubs, it can be helpful to have the Club creator make other members Admins. This is just the click of a button to make any current club member an admin, and any admin can create a Group Event.

@Bryne - Are you still getting a blank Events page?

@Warren Marshall - do you mind elaborating on comments 2 and 3 above? "Provide a way to select all club members instead of manually having to select each one by one" and "Enable a group email feature so that you do not have to input email addresses each time."

@Martin - I'm still working on the report for the potential bug you've found....

  • It would be great to have a club event where all that attend can see their times and compared them to each other.  Even if they didn't ride at the same time.   I had an event this week but it was hard to see who attended, their times. It was all over and it took too much time to see everyone's time. If it was all in one page, that would be fantastic!

  • Thanks Elle for keeping abreast of these threads.

I second many of the suggestions, particularly the need to allow club members to "join" an event so people can see who is/isn't coming, and discussion within events. I also have issues today deleting and editing events, but looks like that is being worked on.

I do disagree with the request above to allow all members to create events. There are three types of members for a reason; regular members, admin, owner. This allows you to customize who can do what, as Elle pointed out. If you want every member to be able to create events in a club, simply make every member an admin. However, many people, particularly with larger groups, might want to restrict this function. As it is set up now, you can have it both ways (simply by managing user type), so please don't change it. If regular members could create as well, there would be no way to restrict this function.

  • Would it be possible to have comments/discussion for a group event?

  • That is great Elle. Will it possible to review past events as well ? I think it has been requested already, so +1

  • I also think it would be great to be able to view past group events: the route, those enrolled, etc

Think this is mentioned elsewhere, but the ability to store and retrieve routes from within the club section for all the admins, rather than them having to duplicate would be brilliant.

  • +1 It would be great to have a page with list of past group events: the route, those enrolled, etc

It's inconvenient to loose all the events that have so many emotions anв memories.

  • • As requested elsewhere I'd like to be able to share Events (and Activities) to a FB Page, not personal account. Most Clubs have a FB Group/Page.

    • List of previous events! This allows a Club to develop a sense of history.

    • Exporting Events to Google, iCal, WebDAV — so they're actually useful. Training Peaks does this, so can Strava.

^^ the above constitutes the kind of thing the Strava team should really be working on to get this SOCIAL media community up to speed ;p

  • I'd like to be able to cancel a single event in a repeating series. That way I can have a weekly ride, but if the weather is bad cancel this week's ride while leaving the following rides intact. Thanks for listening.

  • Great feature!

There's one thing I'd like to add: the ability to cancel a specific occurring of a weekly event without deleting the whole event.

Scenario: in our club we have a weekly no-drop ride that might be cancelled due to bad weather, which happens quite often around here.

  • Allowing non-admin club members to add events would give such an enormous boost to Strava's social aspect I really can't understand why it's not implemented yet. I only joined my local clubs (from my city, can't see any value in joining abstract clubs like brand X owners etc.) to see if it could help me get in touch with local riders. Sadly, over these two years it's been just another feed to stare at when bored, give/receive more and more meaningless kudos etc. Only today I realised that the club event feature even existed! There was no hint from Strava that groups can be anything more than a leaderboard and a forum. I checked several other local clubs, all have dormant admins. And it's fair enough - starting a club should not be a full-time job, you're free to get bored of being an admin after a year, but it should be possible to grow the group organically, through its members' engagement.

Allowing any member to post something like "hey, I'll be doing THIS route on THIS date, feel free to join me" would increase engagement in a place where cycling is not that popular and it's not easy to find group rides when none of your real-life friends rides.

The "make everyone an admin" workaround is almost embarrassing coming from such a mature service, especially since it's not technically complex (perhaps moderating tools etc. but I can't imagine any event-related vandalism being a realistic problem)

  • Love this new feature. We have been trying to find the best way to communicate activities with the club and this will be a great help. As mentioned above an "Accept" or "Decline" button would be a nice feature to add in the future as we could easily see who will be showing up and plan our rides accordingly. Thanks!

  • +1 for accept, decline, maybe. Would also like to import a gpx or tcx file - particularly useful if organising group interest in a sportive.

That would also be a useful feature to add to the My Routes page. At the moment it seems restricted to routes that you create or routes that friends create and share. Adding file upload and adding previous rides (your own and others) would enable users to create a 'scrapbook' of routes to influence future rides. At the minute you have to use an alternative to Strava to do so.

And while I'm at it, group forum features are needed on the smartphone apps. All in all, a fantastic service.

  • As road captain of Strava Club IR Fiets! it can be a handy feature.

    1. the link to My Routes is very handy
    2. I miss the gathering time [gathering 09.45; start 10.00]
    3. The categories for the ride are too few: no-drop, tempo, stumping. We ride drop but moderate
    4. We repeat the event weekly, same time, same gathering place, but every week another route. It would be handy to page in data/routes
    5. The link to the google map page with the meet-up sport doesn't lead to a link or thumb.
    6. A test button to see the result before publishing is handy.

    Best,

  • Just tried it out, some comments (some redundant):

    - the ability to +1 to a ride is critical, but I'm sure you knew that

    - there should be a running list of who has +1'd to a ride (or said maybe)

    - a ride caller should be able to simply reference an existing (public) ride and say "same as this"; having to create a route for complex rides is a waste of time, especially for rides that have been done thousands of times (eg strava.com/activities/114584045)

    - weather should be integrated - just a simple widget from wunderground or something, but with a special emphasis on wind direction and speed

    - ride style (no-drop, tempo, hammerfest) should be editable; every club has their own designations that have grown up over time and SF2G for one would be loath to change that system

    - the club page should show upcoming rides(!) - nothing there yet - eg., strava.com/clubs/sf2g

    - there should be an embeddable widget specific to *upcoming* rides that could be added to any website (eg., sf2g.com)

    - the meetup location should be shown in a streetview window, along with a link to its yelp page and admin-editable description, like "bikes allowed inside"

that's it for now, great first effort!

  • group Ride reminders could  be sent via push notifications. Most riders ride regular routes and want to know what their friends are doing tomorrow or the next day. Seeing who and  how many people are going to a ride in a simple tally will create a great pre-ride feature and Strava being a one stop shop. RSVP'ing is critical to make this work.

  • Our MTB club loves Strava and this new club stuff is awesome!  The only thing missing is allowing members to RSVP to rides, easily allowing any club member to post an event, and reminder notifications of events like everyone is saying above. If these features become available then we will have no reason to ever leave Strava! Great job on the new developments btw!

  • great feature but not working! I'm unable to save events. The popup box just sits there and does nothing. Has this got anything to do with using a MAC?

  • in addition to feedback above, on the iPad, one is only able to see the first two digits of the year so you end up choosing a year blindly, saving it and then realising your dates are either booked in the past or future..
