What does the "commute" button actually do?

What does the "commute" button actually do?  I bike commute a lot and I try to always click this button assuming that I could filter my activity logs for commutes.  Well I've actually tried that and don't see that it is an option.  So what does clicking that button do?

  • Well this is interesting and the Commute Button could be a useful flag for this type of data.

  • Keep the feedback coming folks! I'm organizing a project with a few co-workers to discuss how the commute tag could be better utilized by Strava. I'll be sure to incorporate the feedback here!

  • The main function 'commute' serves for me is that it allows me to compile/filter rides based on that criteria alone. Doesn't matter to me if followers see it, as a ride is a ride. As it stands now, I have to remember which rides were commutes, or remember to add the word 'commute' in some way to the ride title for filtering. This seems like a relatively easy code change. Thanks, Elle.

  • I agree with the comments above - I don't want to see commutes in the activity feed (but am open to the idea of only showing them if they break a PB or top 10 leaderboard etc), and I also want to be able to show a summary of number of commutes separately from normal rides. I would also like to be able to filter based on commutes in the training views/lists.

This feature is the only reason I still have to upload to Garmin Connect (where I mark them as "Transportation") and then am able to count how many commutes versus rides (allowing calculation of money saved, and KMs in commute versus training rides, etc).

  • definitely want to record my daily commute but not share/bore friends with it. Whilst with a friend they vented their frustration at having to sift through others commutes. My manual work around is to keep the commutes on the Garmin until end of month, then do the lot in one go so that they don't go out to friends as an regular email update. love the idea of being able to filter by commute so that I can check out my annual/monthly commute.

  • I know this is a four month old thready but I think commuting button could be like the run option for logging miles.  Where it actually records your commuting miles in a different data base.  Like right now when you look at your profile you have bars for each week.  Orange for cycling, and green for running.  Maybe commuting could go down as a blue color and the users could use it to gauge how much of their total cycling is commuting or otherwise recreation.  If people want to exclude their commutes from spamming people maybe that could be something setup in the settings area.  Also it would be cool to have something like nationalbikechallenge.org.  Their site needs a lot of work but they have a cool idea.  My workplace somehow is involved and I think it would be cool to see Strava be more involved with cycling communities nationwide, not just for the hardcore cyclists.

  • I just want to be able to filter activities in a view to only show commutes for a specific date range, and then give me a distance total for those commute rides.

And PLEASE put a Commute button in the iPhone app where I save/upload the activity!

  • I'm currently looking at my speed data for a month on month comparison - what would be highly useful (as well as the suggestions earlier in the thread that would be handy) would be an "exclude / include commutes" flag on the training calendar. So I can see my aggregate non-commuting rides as well as my commuting. As is the simple how many miles vs how many hours calculation is an easy way of pulling averages, but its heavily skewed by slow commuting miles vs fast racing / club rides

  • All excellent feedback! Thanks so much. We're currently discussing how to design the best features to highlight commute data, so this is all relevant. Thanks!

  • I think some others have already mentioned this but I'd like my commutes to show up separate to my other cycling under stats. I've previously never logged my commute but now I want to in order to track the mileage on my bike components better. But I don't want it to dilute my distance per ride average or my average speed.

  • It would be useful if rides with the commute tag wasn't included in the "Average speed over the last 4 weeks" when creating a route.

I often cycle a lot slower to work, so that I'm not sweaty when I get there.

  • Perhaps include an extra button "Commute+" which means that the ride was not just a direct door to door commute. I commute to work via bicycle, but many times on the route home I will not cycle directly home and will add in more miles on the ride compared with the direct route

  • Hope that you come up with a solution for the commute option very soon, otherwise there is no meaning at connecting Strava with Garmin Connect when you cannot see your mileage divided in commute and training mileage. I don't know if the "E........"-word is allowed in this board, but they offer it. Otherwise, why don't you just add "Commute" to the activity type instead of this button (and at the same time "Mountainbiking" :-)

  • The Strava Metro thing mentioned earlier is one good reason to log commutes in Strava. At the moment it looks like it's aimed at 'businesses', rather than individuals, but perhaps at some point it could be used to aid route planning.

Also, Strava could think about doing some more interesting analysis of commute rides - e.g. analysing the speed data to estimate how many traffic light stops were made. On this note, I am more interested in my actual overall time (i.e. door-to-door) than moving time for commutes.

  • I would like the Strava app to allow for selecting "Commute" for an activity detail.

  • Since my commute is 30 miles and involves many segments, I would not want it excluded from activity 'spam'. However I would like to be able to filter on activities for the year and see how many of my miles were weekend fun rides and how many were gas saving commutes.

  • I track my commuter miles on a spreadsheet and include the miles NOT driven in my car.  Using a formula I calculate my CO2 reduction, based on fueleconomy.com engine data for my vehicle.  That could be a cool added feature, aside from simply filtering commute miles vs. say, training or recreational miles.  (600 lbs CO2 reduced/saved so far this year)

  • Odd thing with the "commute" tagging....

Since I have started tagging my work rides with 'commute"  I regularly get  "kudo's from "random strava users" that I do not know ... I am not following them ... they are not following me...etc

I think the 'commute" tagging is broadcasting my work commuting rides to the general strava community somewhere without my knowledge ??

otherwise...why are these random strava users giving me kudo's for such a basic ride as 'commute" ??

  • Brett, are you a member of any Strava clubs?  I'm on a couple of local groups as well as a couple of global groups, and any of my rides that is not set to Private will show up in all of those groups under Recent Activity.  I regularly get Kudos for any ride not set to Private (commute or not) from people not following me, but those are people who are in the same clubs I am in.

  • ummm sometimes I want to see just my commutes, as that accounts for 2/3 of my total cycling, and I like to compare times from different days and look for trends.

This morning I was trying to look at only my morning commutes, so I typed "Morning Commute" into the search box, and for some reason it did not display all my activities with "morning commute" in the title.  Makes the Search function rather useless, I think.

  • Hi Elle,

Too bad it's a relic. I think the commute tag has a lot of significance. One I'd love to know my total commute miles for personal reasons. Two, a local cycling club I belong to has a competition to see who commutes the most each month, along with how many trips. And there is also bike month. Commuting by bike is becoming more and more widespread, and people are using Strava to see how much of this they do. It would be great to have it separate from the recreational rides.

    Thank you,

    Nancy

  • I would love to see the 'commute' tag put to good use! I personally don't really care if commutes come up in my feed or if my commute comes up in other people's feeds... I know the real rides happen on the weekends and it is motivating to see my friends commute/train during the week.  Also, as someone else mentioned, sometimes commutes are changed to add miles/climbing, so it is cool to see that in the feed.

As others have already said, I'd love to track commute miles by week/month/year for comparison to past periods.  And inversely, I'd love to track my non-commute miles in the same way as they are different efforts/intensities.  Similarly, I'd love to more easily track miles/hours/elevation by week/month/year: Road, Mountain, CX and Commute.  They are all separate forms of  riding.  Plus, I think with Strava aggregating commute data and selling to local governments, they'd get better data when people tag it commute.

And please, please, please add the commute tag to the Strava app! I use the iphone app.

  • It has been one year. Nothing has been done, yet the commute checkbox remains a useless option. It is not difficult to toggle this function to be included/excluded from feeds, and to be a sorting flag for personal statistics. I do not understand why Strava can't put this to bed. The typical Strava user is not just a KOM hunter - we want to sort our rides for commutes as well.

  • This seems like a fairly easy feature to implement.  Can the folks at Strava explain why they would NOT add functionality to the commute button?

  • Love the discussion here about how to use the commute tag and develop new features. There is currently a good mix of specific feature suggestions in the 'Suggest a Feature' section of our forums:

    https://strava.zendesk.com/forums/20154338-Suggest-a-new-Feature/entries/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&query=commute&for_search=1&commit=Search

Since this post is focused on discussion, is anyone interested in adding more feature suggestion forums to the mix? For example, the ability to filter my Activities by the commute tag, better metrics to track commute data on the profile, etc.

Please continue adding your votes and commenting here as well as with the various feature suggestion forums. Thanks!

  • Elle, I think the frustration is that this topic is over a year old. What is being asked is relatively simple - allow commutes to be either included/excluded in a feed and to be able to filter activities based on the Commute flag. I don't understand why Strava is not doing more.

  • @Robert, thanks for your comment and I understand your frustration. Prioritizing all the amazing projects we'd like to work on is tough, and sometimes we have to focus our efforts and resources which means making tough decisions. Our work around Strava Metro and commuting data are important to us, and so is the feedback here. I hope we can find time to prioritize development with commuting features coming up.

I'm sure you've found this thread, but it relates specifically to filtering the Activity Feed: https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/21067962-Options-to-filter-and-sort-the-Dashboard-Feed-on-Strava

  • I would like an option where there is ride recreational and ride transport that I can chose when I start my ride.  I would also like to be able set ride transport with the commute tag on as my default.  This is especially important to the National Bike Challenge.

I have replaced over 80% of my car trips with a bike trip.  I would like to keep track on these as transport rides for the National Bike Challenge.  Currently I have to go into Strava online for each ride and manually put hit the COMMUTE tag.  Unfortunately this doesn't work well not only because it takes time but also because sometimes the miles synch automatically before I can get on my computer and put on the COMMUTE tag.  Once the miles synch they can not be updated in the National Bike Challenge.  Even if the tag is updated later and synched again they do not change from recreation to transport miles.

It has also been noted by others that if Strava would like to sell their/our data to groups like municipalities having the transport and recreational data sets would be very valuable.  Using the COMMUTE tag currently is VERY DIFFICULT.  You have to go online on your computer and enter the commute tag for each individual segment.  The difficulty makes the data inaccurate.  Because using Strava is to synch is easy, the problems of it being very difficult to tag COMMUTE in Strava is messing up my National Bike Challenge data.
