  • @Paul, yes there are run announcements for the Strava App for Android, and they are available with the free version. Let me know if you have any other questions!

  • Paul the option for settings is not on the screen, try the lower keys beside the home (menu) key.

  • I installed the new app (Android), but the run announcements don't work on the new version, although activated.

When I use the old Run app, it works perfectly. Any ideas?

  • @Stefan, when starting a recording, are you recording in 'Run' mode with the new app? You should see the icon of a shoe in the upper left.

  • i just did my first run with strava and got no audio alerts (at least not that were audible over my music).

i'm pretty sure i have the settings correct, it seems obvious.

  • Hi Elle,

Yes I am sure about that.

The new app replaced the cycling app on my phone and the old Run app is also still installed. Perhaps the new version of Strava conflicts with the old Run app?

At this moment I'm not confident on removing the old app because of the alerts not working on the new one.

  • I also cannot hear the voice that tells the pace without putting the volume to the max. I use Spotify as a music player. The sound of spotify does go down, but I have to hold my breath to vaguely hear the voice. I like everything else about the app, but this is a reason for me to switch to another app.

  • Please enable this for cyclist too! I just replaced starve for runkeepr, but I really mis the Announcements.

  • I am just trying out Strava for cycling. I had Cyclemeter, but now I want to get more serious. I set the Run announcements in the Settings (it seemed simple) but never got any announcements during my ride.

Could it be that I was listening to music ? Normally, an announcement should either pause the music or lower the music volume. Announcements important to me, hope it gets fixed quickly.

  • Sorry, forgot to state I am using an iPhone 5 running IOS 7.1. I just downloaded Strava this week - so it should be the latest version.

  • @Peter, unfortunately, this feature for audio announcements is only available when recording Run activities for the time being.

  • Thanks Elle for your response. I appreciate that you took the time, even though you concentrate on the running portion of the app.

We have hundreds of miles of bike paths in my area so I have the earphones in and do not perceive that this causes any safety issue when cycling. Anyways, I keep the volume low so I am aware of my surroundings.

I am sure the developers just disabled announcements for cycling (the code is already written) because they thought it may be a safety issue. Hopefully they revisit their decision, because your competitors offer it and it seems to be a valuable feature.

  • I agree with the other cyclist, voice feedback is important to me also. The lack of voice feedback in the Strava Android app is the reason I don't use it during my rides. I use Endomondo during my rides and afterwords I export the file to my MacBook then upload it to Strava. Another reason I prefer to use endomondo is because it communicates with MyFitnessPal and Strava doesn't. I would absolutely love to be able to use Strava during my rides and cut out all the extra work. I would gladly be a paid subscriber to Strava if they would add voice feedback and auto upload to MFP.

  • A workaround is to set your activity to Run, and then change it back to cycling before you finish. I've just started using Strava after Endomondo, where I used this all the time, and first time I was out I accidentally set activity to Run so I had audio commentary. I thought it was a bug with my phone as it all of a sudden stopped working.

Completely agree with other riders here, this is important, so I think I'll go back to Endo for the time being at least...

  • Hi there

I'll just add my bit here.

I was using Noom Cardio Trainer on Android on an HTC phone. This has an option to increase the volume of the audio to your desired level.

As I'm a bit clumsy, after dropping my phone several times it stopped working and I was kindly given an iPhone to use until my contract renewal. As Cardio Trainer isn't available for iPhones I gave Strava a try. I really like it, particularly the sharing runs with other people and seeing how they are doing. On the iPhone there is an option to switch bewtween a US and British English voice, as well as download others.

The most important thing though, that brought me to this discussion via a Google search, the audio sounds greta on the iPhone and is plenty loud enough.

Now I have a new phone I'm back on Android (Apple control freakery is for another discussion) and I download the Strava App. Now I've come across the problem that many others are having. I listen to music while running and it does lower the volume to tell me my progress. However, it is so quiet as to be barely audible, and it's spoken in a rushed US robotic English. Sometimes I run with friends and they always like me to bring my phone to keep track of our pace/progress but this is now useless. There's no way I can hear the voice at all without headphones.

Hopefully this will be sorted out with an update quite soon? I really like Strava and would prefer to use it now I've got used to it over the last few months, but I'm going to switch back to Cardio Trainer if it's not fixed soon.

    Thanks

    Richard

  • hello,
in my android app there is no option to download the voice, as in his image, and during my runs there is no sound at each mile.

  • Hello Elle,

I've recently converted to Strava from Endomondo, I think the app is great.  However I really want to use the audio feedback feature to track my splits while I'm running.  I have the feature enabled for updates every half kilometer, but either they don't work or they are so quiet that I can't hear them with the phone on my arm (I'm running in urban environment with some traffic noise but not excessively noisy).  I am recording in Run mode and I have the Ringer volume on maximum - I don't see any other way of turning up the audio.  Am I missing something?  I'm using an iPhone 4 running iOS7 and the latest Strava update.

    Thanks, Howard.

  • Hi Ellie,

I'm using the iPhone Strava app and enjoy the audio feedback. Is there a way to toggle the announcements made? It appears the default is:

    1. Distance
    2. Overall Time
    3. Pace of Last Interval (e.g. mile)

I would be interested in knowing my Overall Pace and find myself doing some mental division – and math is not necessarily easy for me during a run. Knowing overall pace is important to me for racing. Is there a setting to toggle to change the announcements?

    Thanks!

    Jeff

  • Hi Jeff,

It is not possible at this time to customize the audio announcements, but this is a great suggestion for us to consider in the future. Thanks!

  • Is the split announcements affected by the phone volume? I can have every volume (ringtone, media, notifications) set to max and it still calls out splits in a whisper. It seems like its the same volume no matter the volume level. Every other running app I've used yells the splits when the volumes are maxed. Samsung GS2 on 4.1.2, strava version 4.1.5.

I also second Jeff that having a selection of what to call out would be nice. Also, having more variety in the call out frequency, like every 1,2,5,10min etc. or 1,5,10miles etc.

  • Is there anyway to get strava running alerts without the use of headphones? The only way I am able to get alerts is when headphones are connected. I run without music/headphones and its really annoying to look at my phone. This used to work fine for me in older versions of the app, has something changed? Using 4.1.7 on a galaxy s4.

  • Since I am using the Strava app on my new iPhone 5s, I don't get the audio announcements anymore. Is there something wrong with my settings (I was using Strava on my 4s as well, using Podcasts to listen music, and the music turned down when there was an audio announcement)? At the start of the route, I hear an audio announcement (and the music is on at that time already), but from then, I don't hear any audio announcement (while I have changed the setting into every half a kilometer). Can somebody help me?

  • The run announcements during distance splits seem to be working fine for me. The music (or whatever I'm playing fades a bit while the run announcement goes off. However, I sometimes listen to podcasts while running and was wondering, when a run announcement goes off, if the music (or in my case, podcast) could be paused? Then when the run announcement has completed, resume the music (podcast). This feature would be great because sometimes I can't hear parts of the podcast, which gets a bit annoying. Thanks!
