  • Hi, There are two things that needs to be improved.

1 - I should be able to trigger Audio announcements using a button in my headphones. For example, double volume up or double pause button. This way I can check my pace (or other stats) without looking to my phone. Also, different buttons could be assigned to different audio announcements.

2 - Audio announcement should be customizable. I should be able to add pace/HR/distance/time etc. information to the audio announcement list.

  • I would like to use it but it is annyoing when it does not pause my music/audiobook when it announces the data. So then i miss a lot of details in the book.

  • Finally found solution for audio coach.

Android Phone Settings > Language & Input >Text to Speech> select Google Text-to-Speech engine

Mine was on Samsung. Probably after last system update.

Now it works :-). Helpful for keeping pace during runs

  • I’m in exact same boat as above comment. Robovoice now instead of female life-like voice. Robovoice is lame.

  • I am just trying out Strava for cycling. I had Cyclemeter, but now I want to get more serious. I set the Run announcements in the Settings (it seemed simple) but never got any announcements during my ride.

Could it be that I was listening to music ? Normally, an announcement should either pause the music or lower the music volume. Announcements important to me, hope it gets fixed quickly.

  • The run announcements during distance splits seem to be working fine for me. The music (or whatever I'm playing fades a bit while the run announcement goes off. However, I sometimes listen to podcasts while running and was wondering, when a run announcement goes off, if the music (or in my case, podcast) could be paused? Then when the run announcement has completed, resume the music (podcast). This feature would be great because sometimes I can't hear parts of the podcast, which gets a bit annoying. Thanks!

  • I'm still having issues with the audio cues for running. Any suggestions to get it running. I love strava and use it always for biking but I'm forced to use Google fit for run as the audio cue work for that app.

  • The new robot voice in the Strava app is HORRIBLE!!!  Please change it back to the woman's voice.  If it doesn't happen soon, I will switch to a different app to track my runs.  What a small and easy change for someone to do that makes a huge difference to users.  Someone at Strava dropped the ball.

  • I can barely hear the computerized male voice and have spent quite a bit of time trying to find a way to toggle it back to the Female Voice.  The Robot-Voice is barely intelligible and in fact I am strongly considering disabling this feature and may even go back to Nike where at least I can understand the feedback.  It's a pity that Nike allows you to choose voice and feedback items.....

  • I agree with the other cyclist, voice feedback is important to me also. The lack of voice feedback in the Strava Android app is the reason I don't use it during my rides. I use Endomondo during my rides and afterwords I export the file to my MacBook then upload it to Strava. Another reason I prefer to use endomondo is because it communicates with MyFitnessPal and Strava doesn't. I would absolutely love to be able to use Strava during my rides and cut out all the extra work. I would gladly be a paid subscriber to Strava if they would add voice feedback and auto upload to MFP.

  • A workaround is to set your activity to Run, and then change it back to cycling before you finish. I've just started using Strava after Endomondo, where I used this all the time, and first time I was out I accidentally set activity to Run so I had audio commentary. I thought it was a bug with my phone as it all of a sudden stopped working.

Completely agree with other riders here, this is important, so I think I'll go back to Endo for the time being at least...

  • Hi there

I'll just add my bit here.

I was using Noom Cardio Trainer on Android on an HTC phone. This has an option to increase the volume of the audio to your desired level.

As I'm a bit clumsy, after dropping my phone several times it stopped working and I was kindly given an iPhone to use until my contract renewal. As Cardio Trainer isn't available for iPhones I gave Strava a try. I really like it, particularly the sharing runs with other people and seeing how they are doing. On the iPhone there is an option to switch bewtween a US and British English voice, as well as download others.

The most important thing though, that brought me to this discussion via a Google search, the audio sounds greta on the iPhone and is plenty loud enough.

Now I have a new phone I'm back on Android (Apple control freakery is for another discussion) and I download the Strava App. Now I've come across the problem that many others are having. I listen to music while running and it does lower the volume to tell me my progress. However, it is so quiet as to be barely audible, and it's spoken in a rushed US robotic English. Sometimes I run with friends and they always like me to bring my phone to keep track of our pace/progress but this is now useless. There's no way I can hear the voice at all without headphones.

Hopefully this will be sorted out with an update quite soon? I really like Strava and would prefer to use it now I've got used to it over the last few months, but I'm going to switch back to Cardio Trainer if it's not fixed soon.

    Thanks

    Richard

  • Hello Elle,

I've recently converted to Strava from Endomondo, I think the app is great.  However I really want to use the audio feedback feature to track my splits while I'm running.  I have the feature enabled for updates every half kilometer, but either they don't work or they are so quiet that I can't hear them with the phone on my arm (I'm running in urban environment with some traffic noise but not excessively noisy).  I am recording in Run mode and I have the Ringer volume on maximum - I don't see any other way of turning up the audio.  Am I missing something?  I'm using an iPhone 4 running iOS7 and the latest Strava update.

    Thanks, Howard.

  • Since I am using the Strava app on my new iPhone 5s, I don't get the audio announcements anymore. Is there something wrong with my settings (I was using Strava on my 4s as well, using Podcasts to listen music, and the music turned down when there was an audio announcement)? At the start of the route, I hear an audio announcement (and the music is on at that time already), but from then, I don't hear any audio announcement (while I have changed the setting into every half a kilometer). Can somebody help me?

  • Hello, audio announcements work fine for me, when using headphones. There are some times, though, when I don't want to use headphones, running with friends or during a race for instance. Moreover, in these occasions I dont' like to hear a yelling voice announcing my splits, because they could be barely intelligible when running on a busy road and annoying for other people on a quiet one.

My suggestion is to add the option of setting just a "beep" instead of the whole audio feedback: in this way I can keep track of the distance and watch my stopawtch if I need it. Of course the volume should be set very high, but a beep is much less disturbing for other people than the announcements.

  • For Android users of the Strava App just to share my experience: at first use I got no audio alerts despite correct settings, I did however notice that after approx every kilometer the music volume would turn down, I guess at the moments the audio announcements were supposed to come in. Could not get audio alerts working untill I noticed I use two text-to-speech functions on my Android Phone. Next to the stock Google function I have also SVOX Classic TTS installed. Whilst other Apps like Endomondo and Runkeeper seem to work well, Strava did not come up wth voice announcements untill I selected the text to speech option back to the stock Google one. Having done that I immediately heard voice alerts when starting, pausing, stopping  a workout in Strava.
So to conclude another option to fix audio problems is to check your text to speech options in the general settings of your Android phone under the Lanhuage and Input menu item and then scroll almost all the way down to select Output for Text To Speech.

  • Is there a way to have the Run Announcements let me know my average pace while running? This is more important to me than my split pace. Thanks.

  • please have a look at the Runkeeper's audio announcements, they have plenty. I would love to see these in Strava as well:

Announcement timing: not only per distance, but also per X minutes

I would like to be alerted of my current time (duration), current & avg.pace, current & avg. heartrate

    Thanks!

  • Volume issue seems to have been fixed but as pointed out by others it would be great to have voice audio (e.g. Podcasts) pause for split/distance announcements. I have been told by developers that there is an iOS API for this, which would work for me on iPhone but not sure about android.

  • Audio alerts important when you run

would be prefect if Runkeeper audio options could be provided by Strava Run. Current Strava Run alerts are very limited

  • I see that audio announcements for biking have been requested as far back as 2014 - this is the only feature keeping me on another app.  Please consider allowing this!  I enjoy hearing updates from my phone in my pocket every mile on a ride.

  • Hi - I know I'm about four years late on this one. I love the audio updates, they really help me push my times down. However, one thing which is a constant frustration is that it doesn't pause my spoken audio. I listen to podcast and audiobooks - especially on my longer runs, and so I either have to pause my podcast/audiobook or backtrack after the announcement has been made.

Maps on iOS or Google Maps both have options to "Pause Spoken Audio" - I would love to see this feature incorporated into audio announcements.

  • The new voice is grating, and the volume on the cues is too low to be heard.

  • I found the volume for the audio announcements made during the run can be altered by increasing the System Volume not the Media Volume........ hope this helps.
