  • I think the MTS cycling challenges are good, but would like to see the sub-badges awarded at different levels than just the same 250km gaps every time. How about badges awarded at 100, 300, 600, 1000 and 1500km, as that way it should appease both those who complain that the challenges are too hard and those that say they are too easy - there'd be more badges at lower levels for those of us who don't get a chance to cycle every day, but for those who can, the highest badge is now even more of a challenge than it is currently.

Even if that's not possible, I would like for the highest sub-badge you achieve to appear in your Trophy Cabinet. I'll never manage 1250km in a month (unless I win the lottery and quit work), but I'm proud of the 8 x 250km months and the one 500km month I did manage, yet my cabinet does not reflect this.

  • Love these Strava challenges, but the leaderboards can not be taken seriously. This months Run Climbing Challenge has the top 4 having ridiculous elevation( the leader has the equivalent of 4 Everests) in one run.

I would flag the activity but they all have a " Request to Follow)

These guys shouldn't be allowed to join challenges as there is no way to call them on the bogus accomplishment.

  • It's pretty disappointing that this thread has loads of great ideas for challenges but none as far as my aware have been used. Seems that nobody is taking any notice.

  • I would like to point out that the Strava "Challenges" are very hemisphere-centric. I live in Victoria Australia (where it is very cold in Winter and there is snow on the mountains I ride) and it seems that as soon as winter ends here, the challenges I like participate in suddenly stop, as it it winter in the Northern hemisphere. It seems unfair that we do not get to participate in as many challenges (climbing challenges in particular) as the rest of the world, due to winter conditions that make climbing mountains on a road bike next to impossible.

Would you please consider including some climbing and distance challenges during our spring summer months (September - Feb) that we have a realistic chance to participate in. Also, you might want to think about the language used in the challenge descriptions, to say something like "celebrate the end of summer with climbing 11,000m" is ignoring the fact that Strava is used by the other half of the world as well!

  • Since the start of 2016 there have been the usual array of monthly challenges, which is cool; however....

Any chance of seeing a little..... variety - both for running and cycling - in what come through in the future?

Challenges with shorter/longer timespans, or which start mid-month?

Possibly some different objectives? A combination of distance and elevation, or something based on travel time?

Basically something to mix it up a bit!!

    Cheers

  • @Tao Deards cant agree with you! That's what makes it a challenge. I hate the cold, but indifferent about the rain. Loads of strava users in the UK still get out and complete the challenges. Its a choice. Hate cleaning my bike, but its a choice and a necessary evil if I want to complete the MTS challenge. The fondo and climbing challenges aren't to hard for this month. My mates ride indoors but are 5 mph quicker. Its not playing on the same field. I definitely think they should have real world and virtual challenges then this discussion could end. I will reiterate before the haters get in! I have nothing against those riders who chose to ride indoors but strava has an ethos of adventure.

  • Agree with that.

How about some Flash challenges, out of the blue with 24 hours to complete and some prizes on offer?

  • Personally I would like to be able to create a private challenge - yes I could do this with another app or an excel spreadsheet, but I am already uploading my sessions to Strava.  The activity I want to use is not Running or Cycling so it doesn't fall into any of the existing challenges either.  I would be happy to test a mod if Strava is willing to create it!

PS the activity doesn't exist on Strava yet either - horseback riding. I have to use Virtual Ride.

  • The challenges really need more entry level stuff. Currently, they just feel very alienating and only for athletes way above where I am and where I ever will be. Just entered the October Cycling Challenge to find out that I will only get a badge if I ride more than 1250km. Really? I'm in the middle of a six-month-long process of building up to 100km a week that is taxing my arthritic 50-year-old frame enough as it is already, thank you. More stratification please...

  • I find the challenges are too geared towards serious athletes - and certainly recognise there's a lot of people aren't ever going to get anywhere near some of the challenge badges.  For other people, the badges aren't even a challenge.

I would like to see some badges based on improvement - ones that look at your performance or volume in a previous month then require you to improve by a percentage.  For some of these they would actually be *harder* for more serious athletes to earn - for example, it might be "Take 3% off your best 20km ride" or "Increase your best 5 minute power by 5%" - something which for a beginner is quite a good goal - but as we all know as you get faster, small gains get harder.

Also, elevation challenges are a pain for anyone who lives where it's flat.

Other challenges should perhaps not involve distance - something like an "all-day hit-out" badge might be one where your ride has to start before 6am and have 4 or 6 hours of moving time, regardless of the distance covered.

I also feel like you could team up with some major events or national sporting organisations. You don't want to devalue it by offering it to too many events, but for example, we have the Australian MTB Marathon Championships coming up in 2 weeks time - how cool would a "Completed the Australian Marathon Championships" badge be? Maybe limit it to UCI-listed XCM events at CN or XCS at S1 level?

  • I was attracted to Strava because of the idea of challenges (and comparing my efforts to others), however I quickly realized that my reality doesn't jive very well with the idea of long rides and big climbs (something that resonates through this forum). I'm a commuter, in Canada, which means riding the same route(s) over-and-over and cold/snow for 4-5 months of the year (making it harder to ride). Could it be possible to do something for my demographics? Maybe:

1- A commuter badge: number of rides or km ridden along the same path (predefined, or the one riden most, or starting and ending at the same spot (my preferred option), one way in morning and the other way in evening or else it doesn't count), or kms during peak hours of weekdays (6-9am, 3-6pm)?

2- A cold riding badge: my Garmin calculates temperature (mostly wrong, but still...) or partner with a weather website to get realtime temperatures to see how many rides/kms ridden in sub-freezing temperatures. Or ridden in the dark as the sun goes down early and is up late (although we all do it, this may be thought as being dangerous)?

These may not be of interest to all, but seeing that most other badges are for people having the time (and energy) to do long distances in tropical and moutainous climates, I would love to see something better targetted  at myself and the many commuters and northerners. Just some thoughts.

  • Greetings everyone!

I have joined Strava recently and I love it! I find the idea with the challenges really interesting. My humble opinion on the system:

    What I like:

    - It definitely boosts my motivation big time and brings lots of flavor to my workout planing.

What I think can be improved:

    - Many beginner riders like me have already mentioned that there is a need of easier challenges as well! We need wider variety of challenges for everyone to participate and enjoy! Make the badge rewards different ranks and this will solve most of the problems! For example rank 1 for distance (monthly) - 100km, rank 2 - 300km, rank 3 - 500km ... and so on and so forth. This way there is going to be some challenge for everyone. For the beginners - the first few ranks , for the pros - the highest rank of the badge.

    - We need wider variety of badges, because currently a certain challenge is eather unimaginably hard for most of the beginners ... or just really easy for most of the pros. We need to have something for everyone! That`s why I would suggest the badge ranking system, as explained above.

    Thank you. : )

    Regards,

    Nikolay

  • To some of the comments below: sorry but virtual activities should NOT be considered for the challenges.  If it's too cold and rainy outside, well, suck it up buttercup.  That's why it's a challenge :)

  • There is still a need for a Marathon run distance challenge

    42.2 km is a challenge :-)

  • It would be great if the challenges were more locale based.

For example, the climbing and distance challenges get longer and higher for the US summer, but in Australia, that means challenges are the hardest in winter and easiest in summer.

  • MTB

Most of the Cycling challenges are great for road bike but hard for MTB riders to compete for distance and elevation.  I think a good target would be kJ for the measured amount of work accumulated over multiple rides.  Or just more calorie based challenges (seems there are few).  Thanks in advance.

  • Not sure where to post his but the listing of "results" for Challenges has gone crazy lately! It seems to be listing every challenge everyone has joined on the front page every day (and saying they've completed it!) so the whole Activities page is just full of erroneous Challenge listings. Can you please fix it (but back to how it was - i.e. only listing actual completion)??

  • It would be nice if there was any variety to the cycling challenges. It just the same Gran Fondo (100km), Distance, Climbing every month since I joined. And the distance and climbing can be tough if you aren't in an area great for that, or at a training level/time commitment to reach. I just feel like there is only one realistic challenge for me every month (Gran Fondo) and it's the same every month.

Examples: Half-Century (50 mi or even 50km), shorter monthly distance, or weekly distance (250 mi). Maybe a 'one ride' climbing challenge (Gain 1000' in  one day) or something. They could be more creative too, like "ride 20 miles from home". Just anything that gets people to try something different or new would be appreciated.

  • Disappointed that the 2 distances are not available this month! Thought it was a great idea especially for those short of time. Reading some previous posts maybe they should have been renamed. 100km fondo, 150km Gran Fondo and then add a third super gran fondo for 200km. I loved my woven badge for completing all 12 last year it is now framed with the post card that came with it. Maybe you should send out woven badges for each challenge completed. I would love to have all the colours displayed in one frame! Maybe make that a premium feature. The jerseys are expensive, but are also exceptionally good quality. You could use woven badges for the MTS series and climbing challenge.

  • I think it would be nice to have 100k challenges for cyclists that are newer or short on time. I can't get out for the full Fondo but I could get out for a metric century once in a while.

  • My comments are all cycling based.

A few challenges would be awesome as ALL YEAR challenges (as in, they're open for the full 12 months). These could be:

    • 24 hours in the saddle
    • 500km in a single ride
    • An everesting

Strava Races for Cycling - Achieve an average of 30km/h on a 100km ride. 35km/h, etc.

MTS Challenges - Should have permanent achievement badges in trophy case. I'm aiming for the 1250 every month this year, but it'd be cool to be able to see how others are progressing in their trophy cabinets.

Gran Fondo Challenges - It's good to have the multiple distances, however, why do it in multiple challenges? A single challenge with different achievement levels would work. 50km, 100km, 130km, 160km, 200km, etc. One badge in the trophy cabinet depending on the distance of the achievement. I don't need to spam my friends with "Michael joined 100km GF" "Michael Joined 150km GF" "Michael achieved 100km GF" "Michael achieved 150km GF" all at once. A single challenge would work great here.

Elevation Challenges - Again, multiple badges depending on elevation achievement.

  • "Summer of 1,000 Miles"

Start Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend (May 23rd) and go to Labor Day Monday in the United States.  It's 109 days from start to finish.  Try to get in 1,000 miles (~1,600km).

Badges every 125 miles (200 km) along the way.

    So that would be:

    125 miles (200KM) Badge #1

    250 miles (400KM) Badge #2

    375 miles (600KM) Badge #3

    500 miles (800KM) Badge #4

    625 miles (1,000KM) Badge #5

    750 miles (1,200KM) Badge #6

    875 miles (1,400KM) Badge #7

1,000 miles (~1,600KM Final badge, completed the challenge!!

    1,000 miles of Summer

  • I would love to see a time field being added in the challenge leader board results as us fat bikers do long hours but short distances compared to mountain and road bikers.

Inserting time field would give a more even result for all kinds of cycling.

  • How about being able to Filter Challenge Results to display "miles" in lieu of "kilometers"--especially at the "my clubs" level?  Here in the USA it just makes more sense.

  • It would be cool to have some long term / big picture running challenges similar to the ones that people set themselves:

    - Go for a run/HM/marathon on every continent (maybe separate ones for including or excluding Antarctica), or every state/province of a few countries (Australia, Canada, US), or Europe

    - Run in 5/10/15/20/+ different countries

    - Generic challenges for running in a different cities - you could try picking some famous routes based on movies, books, sporting events, wars?  Something a bit different.  For example: Phineas Fogg challenge based on Around the World in 80 Days - run in London, Paris, Suez, Mumbai, Kolkata, HK, Yokohama, San Francisco and NYC.

    - X lifetime marathons/HMs

Others would have other ideas, this is just off the top of my head.

  • The activity feed needs to be re-designed because all I can see are the challenges people are signing up to, and I can't see the activity feed.

The people I'm following are very active which says a lot for just how much the challenges push their activities down the window. As a suggestion, there could be a way of filtering the activity feed so challenges are not displayed or, the challenges come up in a different part of the activity feed.

  • The current Everest climbing challenges is only available for cyclists. Please add the ability for runners to complete this challenge. Maybe by completing half the elevation or the elevation in feet instead of meters. You can't ride up Everest anyway, so why would runners be excluded :)

  • I really like the way Nike+ and Runtastic keep track of my total performance. So i get an award for the first 10k, 50k, 500k etc. It is really motivational for me. Also what i would like to see is when I improve on a PR i want to see how much i improved upon it. Was is 1 second or 1 minute.

  • Can we have an option to see the elevation in ft instead of meters (to match the elevation report on my rides)?
