New App Record screen is a mess

My Android Strava app updated yesterday to 4.5 with the new Record interface and I am having a hard time coming up with something nice to say about the new interface.

The old interface was simple to navigate and made sense (for the most part), but you have tried to cram too many settings buttons on the new one and it's a cluttered mess. Do we really need 4 different settings buttons on this screen? Couldn't all of the settings be put under a single button in a logical place rather than all over the screen?

Additionally, why does the "record" button look like a "play" button? A record button is generally known as a circle or square with a red circle in the middle; whereas a button with an arrow in it is know as a play button.

Please clean up this mess.

  • Hi Roger - Just give our Android troubleshooting steps a try. In the majority of the cases, this fixes the problem with GPS trouble.

  • Ellie,

Thank you but there is nothing wrong with the GPS. Strava & my Samsung Galaxy worked in PERFECT harmony until the July update as many many many users are telling you via this thread and other pages within the Strava forum. It's quite simple, the recent 'upgrade' to Strava has destroyed what use to be the most excellent app in the world. It is now unservicable. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can we have the old Strava back as this current one is quite simply flawed. I cannot use it anymore nor can many others so what exactly are Strava trying to achieve? I've had to remove it because it is so unreliable.

  • I just moved to Android from WinPhone, where I used Cyclometer to capture ride data for Strava. Yesterday tried the Strava app for the first time. I never used the old record interface. I don't ride with my phone mounted; its in my back pocket. I expected the app to provide significantly more ride data via voice than it does. Live segment data is nice (though buggy), but where's the distance, average speed, etc. I was kinda hoping to even hear some data you'd usually only see on a heads-up display (current speed, for example). Haven't run yet with the new phone. I can see the settings for run recording include an Announcements section. I guess I'm asking for a ride Announcements section. In the meantime, anyone know a good alternative ride recoding app for Android that works with Strava?

  • I used to be able to get voice announcements as to avg. speed and distance every half mile but with the new Strava app I can't find the settings for this feature. Has this capability been removed from the app?

  • Since the July update Strava has recorded only 1 in 10 of my rides. There is nothing wrong with the GPS as it works on other apps. You have ruined a very good app.

  • The reason I started using Strava was because the map screen on the Strava app was uncuttered and just showed the route I was on/created. This was contrary to the mapmyride screen which had ads and stats about the current ride. By merging the record and map screens into one the new app has reduced the viewable map area and gotten rid of one my favorite things about the Strava app.

  • Tried to log my ride to and from work today, logging with phone in packpack and have screen locked. But nothing gets logged. Even if the screen would be on it is no longer a lock for the stop button as it used to be. Sucks

  • Planned updates:

    1. We're changing the "play" icon for the record button back to the previous graphics.

    2. There was a confusing experience when viewing the map and auto-pause kicking in. In the next release, you'll stay on the map view even if auto-pause kicks in.

    3. The icon to view the map during a recording will also change to be more intuitive.

    Thanks for the feedback!

If Strava is not recording your activities:

With the update to 4.5, we did not change any part of the recording process. We only changed the overlying graphics on the record screen. Therefore, it's not the Strava app update that causes the recording issues, but the underlying operating system and GPS hardware of the phone.

Please see our GPS troubleshooting steps to resolve any recording issues:

    Android

    iPhone

  • Elle, Can you ask them to return the ability to view other screens when a ride is recording. You can't use segment explorer anymore while on a ride which makes no sense. Thanks

  • I too want the lock screen back again.  I've lost two rides with this new version.  And no it is NOT a problem with the phone's GPS, I had a back up going with RideWithGPS and it worked fine.

  • Thanks @Chris for the feedback.

@Bill - Nothing regarding the recording process was changed in the recent app update. Only the overlying visuals were changed. Therefore I'm fairly certain the issue lies with your phone's software connecting your GPS hardware to the Strava app. If you give our GPS troubleshooting steps a try, I think it will improve things.

  • I have also had problems with the new version of Strava. In fact the recent "upgrade" to the Strava android phone app is a huge step backwards; whereas the old app was easy to use, recording a ride on the new one is a hit and miss affair - both I and rider friends have, on several occasions, set off on rides believing we had started recording only to find nothing logged at the end of the ride. It is not evident in what respects the upgrade is meant to be an improvement but our experience is that the exact opposite has been achieved. Please either fix it, or go back to the old version.

Oh - and if you are going to run a forum like this, then dismissing the concerns of users as Elle seems to be doing is not very wise. You guys have created a problem and so you need to fix it - don't blame the users all of whom managed very well with the old app.

  • Hi Rob,

..."believing we had started recording only to find nothing logged at the end of the ride"

In our experience, issues like this are caused by how your phone's operating system sends GPS coordinates to the Strava app for recording. According to our testing, nothing in the Strava app itself has changed in terms of activity recording to account for missed recordings or incomplete recordings. However, we've observed that after an OS or app update, the GPS signal from the phone can get corrupted somehow.

Following the steps provided in these troubleshooting articles can fix the issue:

    Android

    iPhone

My intent is not to dismiss your concerns, but to provide solutions that work. Thanks!

  • Ok, so now I’m getting annoyed. I followed all the instructions from Elle as to how to fix the issue (reboot phone, ensure GPS fix, etc – and by the way, I work with GPS professionally !) and this morning my ide of 65+ km was recorded as being of approximately 10 m (ten metres !). The record button still looks like play and my sense is that you have done nothing to address all the concerns that people have about the upgraded app. I haven’t used ride with GPS before but its starting to look like a good option.

Overall very disappointing to see a good app rendered so useless and even more disappointing to see that apparently you aren't too bothered about it

  • My continuing frustration with the new interface is that I have a hard time seeing the record/start icon without stopping to put on reading glasses. Its fine lines and lack of fill make the icon hard to see with older eyes. I gather you plan to return to the earlier icon, which was great from my standpoint, just want you to get a different perspective on this.

  • Please bring back the high contrast, simple to use, old recording screen. The old screen was functional without my reading glasses. The new screen looks like a blank page to me. Even when I was able to get a recording with help of another rider, I was unable to save it. This update took two steps back.

  • The new screen display is a great improvement, tthe white background improves legability compared to the  former black background. But sorry there is an, however, I never learn. I have just updated the latest version of Strava and even more foolishly updated to IOS9.02. As a result there are too many variable to be able to isolate the problems without more time wasted at my computer rather than getting on with something more constructive. Is the fact that Strava is not recording any of my ride or run data, a Strava problem or an IOS9 problem. At the moment the app is not useable and I am resorting to alternatives, which is sad because it has been great for my son in New York and I, in London, to compare our rides.

  • The inability to use the app to record w/o an internet connection is TERRIBLE!!!  I am on PAYG here in the UK, there's usually a day (or a few days) between my monthly allowance running out and me topping up my phone credit..., however, I use Strava every week day.  Not being able to use it until I put credit on my phone (to get more data) is an horrendous step backwards in usability!

  • I AM NOT HAPPY WITH MY STRAVA AT ALL...INSPITE OF PAYIING R 499.99.....FOR WHAT.

WHEN I CYCLE IT ONLY RECORDS THE TIME AND NOTHING ELSE.

THEN I CANNOT SAVE THE ACTIVITY.

  • Another one who really dislikes the record screen and have lost yet another ride.  I think the issue is nothing to do with GPS, but the removal of the auto-lock functionality when you start recording.  If you happen to doubleclick on the start button accidentally (or brush it while putting the phone away in a bag or pocket), you stop your ride in the first 10s.  Really not at all user friendly...  Pre 4.5 this was never an issue as Strava locked the screen to prevent this happening.  Have lost ~5-10% of my rides since 4.5 due to this and it is driving me nuts.

If that auto-lock functionality was brought back and the other changes kept, I'd be happy.

  • I hate the new screen design. Too abstract and non-intuitive. I've lost many rides due to the design. Please fix it.
