Changes to default Activity names

Starting August 18th, we changed the way Strava automatically names your activities. Previously, when uploading from a device (via the Strava website or via a syncing program) your activities would be titled "mm/dd/yyyy City, State" or "dd/mm/yyy Town, Region, Country". Now, your activities will follow the same naming convention as the Strava App. For example, "Morning Ride", "Afternoon Run", "Evening Run".

The default activity name is easy to edit. From the mobile app, when viewing one of your activities click on the "pencil" edit icon or select edit from the menu button. From the website, see the "pencil" edit icon to the left side of your activity page. You can also edit multiple activities from the "My Activities" view under the Training tab.

We made this change in an effort to build consistency between the Strava website and mobile app. Additionally, when viewing activities listed on the profile or Activity Feed, activities are always listed by date making it easy to determine when the activity took place.

September 9th, 2015

We understand that the new default activity names will not work for everyone on Strava. We welcome your comments and discussion on this thread and hope you understand that your feedback is heard and has been discussed with the Strava team. We do our best to cater to all the needs of our community, knowing that new features and product changes will impact our members in different ways.

We don't currently have plans to revert the changes or build additional settings to customize default activity names. Our product continues to evolve and we hope you stick with us knowing that we take your feedback seriously.

  • I hate this change. I now have to manually type the old format in, it's slow and not a good move Strava. Change it back please or as others have said, allow a toggle option for either naming option.

  • Another vote for "Morning Ride" + "Start Location" format here.

  • Please change it back! The information if its a "morning run" or an "evening run" is useless, but the location where it took place indeed is very important. For a race-weekend it might be ok to change the name - but it's inefficient to have to change the name of all the activities.

When I uploaded some files (respctively synced them from garmin connect) everything is "morning run" or "ride" and I have to click through all the activities to rename them...

Your previous solution was great and it took a lot of waiting until garmin implemented the "location feature" too, but now you're done with it? C'mon?!

  • I also miss the location names of my workouts. This was the easiest way for me to see, at a glance, which route I chose to run for any given day. I wish "Morning Run" would have simply been added to this existing data, because on its own, "Morning Run" is meaningless to me. All of my runs are morning runs.

  • Please make this un done or create an option to use the old names as default. Afternoon ride by example is such a meaningless title. Now I have 3 different names voor all my activities. The date and place there against very handy and clear.

  • Now my notifications will tell me I’ve gotten kudos or comments on the generically titled activity “morning/afternoon/night ride” and I will have no idea which ride that refers to unless I take the time to manually rename them or click the link to see the details of the ride. That’s bad UI. The system can be setup so that it tiles the ride automatically from the metadata  (date/distance/location), offloading work from the user and making for a better UX.

  • The new names are too generic. Add my voice to the throngs of users crying out for at least the option to use the previous naming convention.

  • Please change it back! the default option before was much more relevant. At least give us the option of which default naming convention to use.

  • The new naming convention is way too generic. Change it back or add specifics

  • I also agree with you. The past way to tittle the activities was better ("mm/dd/yyyy City, State" or "dd/mm/yyy Town, Region, Country"). Strava could undo this changes. It was easier to find when and where we run.

  • I agree with many others. I want the option to either a) go back to how it was b) have a choice of activity name styles or c) merge the two styles but tag morning ride, afternoon ride on the end because to be honest that naming convention is meaningless on it's own.

  • This is an awful change.  I spent a long time trying to figure out if I had done something that broke my configuration settings, as I could not imagine something so horrible as the default.  "Evening Run" is a completely generic, useless title.  I want to quickly glance at the training calendar and see what/where I ran.  Also, when I receive Kudos for a "morning run", that is completely meaningless.

PLEASE change this back, or at least provide an option to give us the choice for a naming convention in settings.  I now have to change this manually, which is really tedious.

  • No. Just no. Please revert this back to the old way of posting activities (or give an option) as I now have to rename them all for consistency and its really annoying to have to do this every time I run.

  • Old naming convention much better. Please put it back or give us the option.

  • If it's all in the name of consistency, why not make the mobile app follow the already great, and useful web app convention?

Dislike the new style, it feels like you're dumbing down the technical aspect of data collection.

  • Please change the default naming scheme back or provide an option to use it. An activity name with date is really useful!

  • I canceled my premium membership over this today. I hope others will follow. This might be the most effective way to signal that we are not ok with the recent changes:

  • This article is telling for why customer service from Strava may leave something to be desired.

    http://blog.strava.com/behind-the-scenes-with-elle-anderson-9121/

    Notable quotes:

"I can fit my work around my training – not the other way around."
"At heart, I’ll always be a Strava athlete first, and Strava employee second."

So basically, at Strava, the customer is last.  Perhaps Strava should be hiring employees who listen to their customers.  Meanwhile, perhaps we can Tweet our concerns to https://twitter.com/ellebellerina, who made this post in the first place.  I have already sent her a direct Tweet, which she has ignored. If more of us do it, perhaps we'll get some attention.

I'm a premium member, but with this kind of service, I'm not sure why.

  • I don't think calling out or harassing Elle is the right answer, as she's obviously not the one making the call on this. Give Strava the benefit of the doubt and hopefully we'll get a response soon.

  • Looks like my previous comment didn't get posted. Strava, what a horrible idea to change the title. LOCATION is KEY to being able to quickly scan rides/runs done in various. And the Kudos notifications are now so generic, you have no idea what actually got kudos (besides some "afternoon run" you did sometime). PLEASE listen to your customers and change it back.

  • Sam, she posted the article, so presumably she knows the people who made the decision.  FWIW I have another outstanding issue that has been open for ~9 months on Strava (https://goo.gl/zSnUrM), so I don't think that it's necessarily safe to assume that Strava support will get back to us, or is even necessarily reading these forums. I've upleveled both to Elle's twitter and Strava's twitter.  Let's see if we get any attention.  If not, I like the approach suggested below of suspending premium membership en masse. There's some evidence to suggest that customer complaints fall on deaf ears, at least in these forums.

  • I sent a direct request to Strava support. As a result of the response below, I've chosen to not renew my premium membership:

    Hello Derek,

Sorry but unfortunately we don't have any plans to roll this back at this time. I'll be sure to share your thoughts on this with the team. Also, you may want to add this to our Community Forums. We use these forums to consolidate and collect feedback from our community so if there is enough interest, it may be something we put on the roadmap.

  • Huge bummer. I'm still keeping my Premium account, but Strava just got a little less cool for me.
