Changes to default Activity names

Starting August 18th, we changed the way Strava automatically names your activities. Previously, when uploading from a device (via the Strava website or via a syncing program) your activities would be titled "mm/dd/yyyy City, State" or "dd/mm/yyy Town, Region, Country". Now, your activities will follow the same naming convention as the Strava App. For example, "Morning Ride", "Afternoon Run", "Evening Run".

The default activity name is easy to edit. From the mobile app, when viewing one of your activities click on the "pencil" edit icon or select edit from the menu button. From the website, see the "pencil" edit icon to the left side of your activity page. You can also edit multiple activities from the "My Activities" view under the Training tab.

We made this change in an effort to build consistency between the Strava website and mobile app. Additionally, when viewing activities listed on the profile or Activity Feed, activities are always listed by date making it easy to determine when the activity took place.

We understand that the new default activity names will not work for everyone on Strava. We welcome your comments and discussion on this thread and hope you understand that your feedback is heard and has been discussed with the Strava team. We do our best to cater to all the needs of our community, knowing that new features and product changes will impact our members in different ways.

We don't currently have plans to revert the changes or build additional settings to customize default activity names. Our product continues to evolve and we hope you stick with us knowing that we take your feedback seriously.

  • Thanks for the explanation. My recommendation is to change the Strava App default activity name to the date/location naming convention. Here's my post:

  • Can't stand the new naming please give the option to change it back to date and location. Think I'm going to follow and cancel premium too...
  • Strava members should be allowed to select a default structure of the activity name.  Period.

  • This is not a good change, at least the location name should be included in the default name.

  • "We value your feedback regarding this change, so if you have any comments or questions please let us know. If you have a favorite style or convention when naming your own activities, we'd love to hear it!"

    and than this:

"Sorry but unfortunately we don't have any plans to roll this back at this time."

Are you kidding? Are you really interested in our opinion at all?

  • I preferred the "old" convention - it had meaning - so I didn't have to type something in. This "new" generic is just, well, generic - has no meaning whatsoever. A backwards step. Pants. Rubbish.

  • I don't like it, please change it back! The date isn't so bad, but starting location of the ride is always interesting to see where peole are riding, especially ones that travel a bit.
  • Very poor reasoning behind this change, and I much prefer the old convention.  Having the name automatically give the location of the activity makes it much easier to find old activities and should be the default for both web and mobile.  No chance of getting me to pay for premium when I have to manually rename every activity.

  • Change it back... The NEW format is garbage and that's where it should go.
  • You should made optional choice for the name of activity , which style you've preferred to showning on your dashboard.

  • Dislike it, please revert to old, or give option to have a default activity title format!

  • Change it back.  I understand the desire for consistency so make a change to how the app does it rather than the other way around.

  • This is actually quite an annoying change, especially since all my bike rides are now labelled "Morning Run" or "Afternoon Run" and I have to change them all manually. This is actually almost a show-stopper for me.Why not just give users the option of the old or new naming convention?

  • It seems that in a lot of cases the App is the "Golden Child" when it comes to features (activity naming, uploading photos etc) with the Web a poor cousin. I guess there are a lot more people running the app than there are using Garmin's etc. I only use the app to check others rides during the day or maybe add a comment if I'm mobile, but i MUCH prefer using the Web interface.
  • This is very ordinary, I much prefer the previous naming convention, the new one is stupidly generic. Why not just provide an option for people to choose.

  • Let's get as many votes as possible, at the suggestion of Strava, who supposedly considers our votes. Click "me too" or "I agree":

  • Don't see how to "agree" and support the overwhelming negative reponse to this change ans ask for Strave to reinstate the original Date / Location default...but please Strava junk this retrograde change.

  • Don't like it - please revert it back

  • Just because an activity started somewhere doesn't really describe where you went. Most people will always start near where they live so how is that more descriptive? Besides I always end up changing the activity name anyway so it's less characters to delete. It's a thumbs up from me! :)

  • Don't change it back. I like "Morning/Afternoon Ride/Run"

  • Just adding my name to the chorus - this change sucks.  Please revert to the old naming convention.

  • Reverting to the "old" does not take away what James Griffith wants. His view is valid only iy you are concerned about how many characters you want to delete before typing in what you want. Bring back the "old" and keep everyone happy.

  • Yeah the new way is useless.  You might as well put "Ride Title" as default text, to at least indicate it needs to be changed.  At least the old default had more specific data about the ride.

  • For those who are changing the title via the web site: triple click in the title field to select all words, hit 'delete' and then type in the new title.  Works in Firefox, Chrome and IE.  The new vs old title format doesn't change how that works, so it shouldn't matter what that default title looks like if you always change it.

Another reminder: go to and up vote it!

  • I like the change. I don't like the place name, nor the date in the activity title, and I had to change every title to "Morning Ride". This saves me the effort.  But realistically, there are clearly two camps here, so Strava really should make the naming scheme a customizable user preference.  Personally I'd like to have have the activity named with data from the ride, such as: Distance/AvgPower/AvgHeartRate/Calories, all of which would be selectable fields to include in the title (or not).

  • I liked the old method with a place name and date. I generally used to keep the date and place and just append some description. If I did not bother to do that at least I (and everybody else) knew where had been without too much more effort.

Plus now I have got 11 years of data in this format so I guess will just need to type more now to keep my own data consistent.

  • PS Why does Strava make a change then ask for feedback - which often is mainly negative as here. The other recent one was the Google to OSM maps change which most people don't like either.

Or maybe you do and your focus groups aren't representative?

  • "We value your feedback regarding this change." It doesn't appear so.

  • I'd bang my head against the wall but like commenting to Strava, would serve no purpose as I've seen almost no feedback used to improve the service and no big feature requests implemented after multiple years.

But since I'm here and already ranting (again) at unexpected changes made to the service, I personally like to rename all my rides but like to keep the date in the title and usually also keep some variation of the location so it was nice already having that info pre-populated. I also follow quite a few people that just leave it to the default and this causes issue when you're in the mobile app or looking at the Activity Feed on the dashboard and can't always tell where the ride was just by the map tile. Now the default location is gone.

Also when you go to Training --> My Activities there might be page after page of "Morning Ride" or "Afternoon Run". The Training Log page does displays the activity type and date but you have no way to easily identify what particular activity it might have been weeks later when looking at dozens of activities with the same name. Same thing with hovering the cursor over the activities in the Training Log and Training Calendar and not being able get a better idea where the activity took place.

Options are great and since there are a few people who like the change, I'd rather see it become an option or setting a user can select for "activity title auto-fill" where you can go into your preferences and choose what to use.

  • Please either change it back or give us the option of choosing the naming conventions. The date and location for me was VITAL. I've just subscribed as a premium member, I am quite close to cancelling my membership.
