Wahoo RPM Cadence only sensor pairing

I bought a Wahoo RPM cadence only sensor and when trying to pair it with the Strava iPhone app it cannot do so under the cadence only profile. It always pairs under speed+cadence profile. No devices are even searched for when the cadence only profile is enabled. Is this expected?

Thanks for the helpful tips from Herman, Rob and Igor.

"Removing all the devices, and then adding the cadence sensor first, and then the chest strap, fixes the problem.  I would guess that the app uses the first registered cadence sensor, thus does not work if the chest strap is registered first.  This is something for the developers to look at!"

I will pass this on to the team.

  • I am having the exact same issue, did you ever figure out a fix?

  • Was told by customer support that this is an issue that they are aware of and working on a fix for. However they don't have an ETA on when it would be available. Was asked to continue using the speed + cadence profile until then

  • Just to clarify, is there any issue when pairing the sensor under the speed and cadence profile? Or does it work as expected?

  • To clarify, the RPM speed sensor will pair, but the cadence does not.

  • Thanks Tim, I'm sorry to hear that the cadence data is not working. Two things - When I view your most recent activity, I see cadence data, second you appear to be recording with the Wahoo app and not with Strava?

  • Hi, I'm having the same issue. I could not pair the RPM sensor with the Cadence only profile, but was able to get it paired with the Speed+Cadence option.  However, even with it paired, the Strava app did not show any cadence data.  Please help find a resolution.

  • Same for me.

I'm owning the Wahoo RPM Speed & Cadence Combo. Sensors (or maybe just one, can't confirm) can be connected with the speed+cadence profile but no data are recorded or shown. When trying to connect with the cadence only profile it even doesn't start to search for devices.

Please let me know, what to do.

  • I've got the same issue the individual cadence sensor known as the RPM sensor will not pair to the cadence only aspect of the Strava app. It pairs just fine with the Wahoo app and my ROX 10.0 computer. It will pair with the Speed&Cadence but the Strava app doesn't appear to be using that info as cadence.

  • Same problem. Paired under cadence and speed. Cadence not showing up in the app. Tested the censor with the wahoo app, works perfect.

  • Same here! I have the speed & cadence sensor and only the speed sensor seems to connect! Getting really frustrated with strava. I bought the sensors after strava showed on every other page that they support the wahoo sensors and now it doesn't work!
Sort this out quick or I'm gone from strava!!!

  • Just installed mine and it works fine. Cadence shows up in the upper right corner of the display. Though it would only sync with the speed+cadence profile, not cadence only.

  • Hi all, on the topic of Cadence sensors not pairing with iOS:

Selecting the Cadence (only) toggle unfortunately does not work. You'll need to toggle Speed & Cadence option.

Hope that helps, and keep us posted.

  • The cadence now shows up when I am riding, which it didn't before no matter which of the toggles I used. So all good now :)
Keep on improving the bike computer if you want me to us the social network aspect and pay the premium every month!
I don't want to add a garmin, I want a one stop solution through strava!!!!

  • That does not fix my problem. I can get the cadence OR the speed sensor to work. I can not ever get both to work at the same time. Please fix!

  • I'm having the same issue. The speed sensor works or so the speed shows but cadence shows 0. Every now and then it will work and work the entire ride but now it won't work at all.

  • To clarify - the Strava app does not accept speed sensor data. Speed and distance is currently calculated using GPS coordinates.

However, if you add the Wahoo sensor under Speed & Cadence, Strava will read the cadence data.

If you are having trouble recording cadence data, please submit a ticket for further troubleshooting with our tech team. Thanks!

  • I have fixed this issue (well for me anyway). For Strava the speed sensor is not used (whole other story). If you have both the speed and RPM cadence sensors in range then Strava can get confused. To fix this first remove the speed sensor (temporarily) and place it far away. Make sure it is not in range of your phone by checking on the Wahoo fitness app. then go to your sensors then edit and delete the current speed and cadence sensor. Spin the wheels on your bike then search again and you should eventually find the cadence sensor (took 15 secs for me). you should now have cadence info on strava rides. You can now replace the speed sensor if you want to use the wahoo fitness app. Strava will not use this sensor.

  • I'm going to cross post here from this forum thread, but this one seem to be getting more traffic.

While using another app to record data before uploading to Strava will work, that prevents the use of Strava features like Live Segments.

Can I file an enhancement request so that the speed calculation can be configurable?

Using the BTLE sensor to calculate speed could i) reduce draw on the device battery (iPhone in my case) and ii) reduce on cellular data consumption. I think any device user would appreciate those savings.

  • Using Speed & Cadence option with my cadence-only wahoo device worked for me.  Thank you for clarifying Elle.

  • Same here.  I have the speed+cadence combo and rarely get any response in Strava.  So I've been recording via the Wahoo app, then exporting to Strava at the end.  Not ideal.  I am getting different distances - Wahoo tends to show less (and it is set for my correct tire circumference).  Wahoo's app is also not great on power usage, or auto-pausing (though that's enabled).  Ideally I want go back to using Strava to record everything.

  • I think the "problem" is that Strava only support one speed+cadence sensor at a time, which is quite logical. The Wahoo RPM sensors should present themselves as either speed or cadence sensors, not both...

  • I too am having the same issue. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Works perfectly using the wahoo app. This is really frustrating and the only reason I signed up for premium subscription was so that I could use Strava as a bike computer and have realtime feedback.

  • *bump

having same frustration. cannot pair RPM cadence sensor under cadence. but you know this. how come wahoo's app will do this and strava app won't? reverse engineer from wahoo app? .. just saying.

  • I sorted out my issue with the Wahoo cadence sensor always showing zero. Turns out that my Wahoo heart rate monitor was getting picked up incorrectly as a cadence sensor as well and since it was the first sensor in the cadence sensor list, it defaulted to that. I removed the heart rate monitor from the cadence sensor list and the "real" cadence sensor got picked up and worked. This seems to be a bug with the Strava app.

  • this doesn't solve anything  now it pairs but shows 0 always.
