Feedback on live segments for iPhone and Android

On May 17th, we released Live Segments with the most recent update of the Strava app for iPhone and Android.

Live Segments brings the experience of competing on a segment to your mobile phone. Both free and Premium athletes can use Live Segments, however Premium athletes will see additional screens with comparison metrics.

Read more about this feature through our documentation or see a demo on our blog.

Leave us your feedback, issues, and questions below. We're looking forward to hearing what you think.

To summarize the feedback we've received so far:

    1. Ability to view live stats on the Live Segment screen such as heart rate, power, speed. Or, the ability to navigate away from the Live mode to the record screen, and back during a Live Segment.
    2. Confusion when following a Route with the app (marked in Red) and approaching a Live Segment (also red).
    3. Live Segment comparison with a PR or KOM/QOM doesn't use the actual speed, instead uses a fixed, average speed of the effort.
    4. Requests for support for the Apple Watch and other wearables.

  • A little question. So when i see the live stats i can't see anything else??. I really like to see my speed, power and cadens also when i'm going for the KOM!.

  • This is a good point Almer, however we designed the live segment mode to focus on your progress along the segment compared to another effort, choosing not to focus on your live stats during this experience.

Here's what we describe on our blog:

As you approach a starred segment or a popular segment, the screen automatically changes to show the Live Segments view.

You’ll will see a map of the upcoming segment including a notification bar with segment name and start location. As you get closer to the start of the segment, the notification bar turns from black to orange.

After the segment starts, you enter Live Segment mode. You’ll see your current effort in the center, with your PR on the left and the person on top of the leaderboard on the right.

Bright color-coding, green if you’re ahead, red if you’re behind, makes it easy to see how you compare to your PR and the top of the leaderboard. When you cross the segment finish line, you’ll see a summary of your effort. Then you’ll automatically go back to the record screen with your live stats.

  • Hey Elle,

Just tested the feature. I'ts nice, and the idea is good. BUT, i get the point focussing on time attack, only to do a good time attack you need info. When i can't see the basic things (speed, cadans, power, Heartbeat), it's useless. It's even a little bit dangerous, I know what my maxmum heartbeat is and i want to stay on that or just under. Now i don't now what it is!.There is plenty of room on the live screen to show. If you split the screen you can add all. Now we don't have a choose, there is no option to swap between screens. On a longer segment there isn't any info for the cyclist....

  • Great Almer - we hear you on being able to see your live activity stats while in "live segment mode". We'll take a look at what this would look like for future iterations. Thanks.

  • Upgraded to premium and went for a ride to check it out, particularly to find out what the audio announcements say because you don't describe it anywhere and I prefer to keep my phone safe in a pocket. Switched on all audio notification settings. I got nothing. Not a word. Where I ride is hilly and forested and has poor phone reception. Does the real time segment feature on Android require mobile data or should it work offline? I have the latest strava version from the android play store on a galaxy s7.

  • I have just subscribed as a premium user and that is confirmed in my Iphone app. During my cycling exercise the live segment notifications does not work although it is switched on. Is there anything I can check or need to do because I really want to start using this feature. Hope to hear soon.

  • tested the live segments: Super.

But: the visual design and the UI during the segment seems to be based purely on the average speed of the complete segment (please correct me if I am wrong) what makes it somehow useless during longer segments.

E.g. if I have a segment that starts with a 5% ascent in the beginning and 11% ascent at the end, a realistic comparison to my PR during the segment is not possilbe as I am far ahead in the beginning, and will fall back at the end. The problem: I don't know how many seconds I need to be ahead in the flat section to beat my PR.

I think the ranking should not be based on one number, i.e. the overall average speed calculated down to the current distance of the segments, but the time for each distance of the segments that was needed before...

  • Completely agree with Almer Aantjes, I always need to check my heartbeat at sprints, too! Now using an hr app overlaying to show it. Waht about a customisation option to choose what to show and what to hide on the screens?

  • Hi,

I just subscribed for a premium membership to test the live segments feature.

Tried on both an iPhone 6, iOS 9.3.2, Strava app v4.17.0 (4119) and iPhone 4, iOS 7.1.2, Strava app v4.11.1 (3541).

While the feature seemed to work perfectly for the iPhone 6, nothing showed up on the Iphone 4. No segments were marked on the map page, and no notificationens were given when I neared and entered segments on the road.

Really a shame, because it is the iPhone 4 I use as a cycle computer.

Is this the way it should be, or is the feature in the pipeline for the iOS 7 version of the Strava app?

  • @Alistair - we can't guarantee that the live segments will work on Android without a cell data connection. You're welcome to give it a try, but it's likely the result won't be very satisfying. Additionally, please try starring your favorite segments, or segments you know you will do on your route. Depending on your area Strava might not register many popular segments.

  • @Pascal, See my previous response above - it may be due to fewer popular segments in your area. We recommend that you star your favorite segments in advance of using the Live Segment feature. You can star segments from the web or app.

  • @Thomas - Yes, actually I know what you are referring to as it was intentionally built this way in regard to a fixed average pace used for comparison during the segment. Unfortunately, we couldn't find a way around this one while still building a well-performing live feature. It is difficult to factor in the actual speed variation of the PR or KOM/QOM/CR effort being used in the comparison mode.

Thanks for understanding, and we will continue working on this challenge in future iterations.

  • @Tommy - unfortunately, you'll need the latest Strava app version to support Live Segments. It's not possible for us to update a previous version of the app.

  • Is there a way to view the segment/route map whilst in the 'live segment' mode? I had to stop in the middle of a segment and go back to the start because I didn't know which direction it took at a junction. The 'race' mode graphic is interesting but if I don't know where I am going there is no point to it, if I take a wrong turn I will exit the segment.

  • @Graeme - Thanks for sharing. We're aware of this exact feedback, as in the difficulty of following a route while live segment mode is on. We've taken note and will address this in future iterations. I hope we can improve the experience of using these two app features at the same time.

  • Thanks for the reply, Elle.

It seems that it doesn't work at all without a phone signal. I've been out several times, segments all starred, but I don't hear any audio announcements at all.

  • Have tried out the Live Segments a couple of times, really like it! Blew some old PR's out of the water!

    Some suggestions:

    • I'm not at a level where I care about the KOM's time. I would much rather see a comparison against the PR time of one of my friends on that segment. I'd love to be able to challenge friends on certain segments.
    • When the app shows my previous PR, I'd like to know how old that PR is.
    • Would it make sense to have audio feedback? e.g. calm chimes when gap between previous PR is same / increasing; sharp beeps when gap between previous PR and current performance is decreasing.
    • I experienced that upcoming segments that go in the opposite direction get announced. That's annoying.

    Overall good work!

  • It would be nice if we could see our heart rate during live segment

  • ... or if we could toggle between live segment and normal view if it's difficult to have heart rate during live segment..

  • I agree with Thomas LK.  The feature is not very useful when it only compares to the average time of my PR or KOM.  I applaud the effort and I really want to use the feature, but it needs to compare actual time / distance along the route.  Right now, it's only valid on segments where my speed never varies from the average.

  • from that point on you've implemented "live segments" on Strava the app became useless on my Iphone.... lagging, lack of gps signal (today i rode 70km.. Strava recorded only 39km)...I never had any problems so far... until the 17th of may... the App itself became just really slow and stopped working properly in general... pretty frustrating.

p.s.: I already deactivated "Live segments", I even set back all of my settings (including network settings)... still having the same problem.

  • Please add the option you can choosy ONLY for starred segments. Now a lot of nearby segments pops up when you don't want. Verry annoying. And disable a segment would be nice also.

  • I think you should display not only always kom but you have to find the perfect opponent using the previous session. For example: I'm the 126th in this segment, let me play against the 100th, I think it's more catchy, don't you think?

  • I'm enjoying the live segment feature but totally support the requests to include live stats on the screen at the same time. Most important for me is the heart rate, I combine a bluetooth heart strap with my android device so that i can monitor heart rate live... in my advancing years I want to know that I'm not going flat out too soon on the longer segments!

  • Sorry if this is the wrong place for the feedback, but I would also add the desire to compete against my avg. time AT in a live segment. The avg. time (versus my PR) is a better approximation of how Im continuing to develop since sometimes I put in a sprint to achieve my PR. Would still like to see my PR as well, of course. If I had to choose between my AT and KOM, I would choose my AT. The KOM's are unatainable by me. They are set by professionals using time trial setups and I am an amateur using cyclocross, so it's meaningless/ verging on demotivating.

  • I can't seem to cancel a segment that is automatically entered into, despite following the below advice for iOS.  I would buy premium if this could e fixed.

How do I cancel a segment?

If you hit map icon or back button while the “approaching” or “starting”  messages are displayed we cancel the race on that segment and ignore it for the rest of your recording.

  • @Daniel, can you pass along any more information to help us investigate?

One thing to note, the dismiss action to exit a live segment may not turn off the audio notifications. It mainly dismissed the live visuals and comparison screen, allowing you to return to the map or the regular record screen.

If you're still having trouble, please let us know!
