Feedback on live segments for iPhone and Android

On May 17th, we released Live Segments with the most recent update of the Strava app for iPhone and Android.

Live Segments brings the experience of competing on a segment to your mobile phone. Both free and Premium athletes can use Live Segments, however Premium athletes will see additional screens with comparison metrics.

Read more about this feature through our documentation or see a demo on our blog.

Leave us your feedback, issues, and questions below. We're looking forward to hearing what you think.

  • @Elle  it's more that popular segments are appearing when I don't want them to.  i.e. a popular segment turns on and overrides starred segments that I want to see.

I want to dismiss (not just hide) a segment that comes up.

  • Now I have disabled live segments after some time of using it because the benefit (motivation on some parts of the tour) is too minor in comparision to the many disadvantages (live stats very seldom visible because in my area there is almost always a segment, time is compared to the average speed of an segment).

  • Hi, this morning, I noticed a 17sec difference between the live and the leaderboard algorithm over an 8 min segment. This is significant. I see there are two different algorithms, but seems the live algorithm has some way to go?

  • Here's my feedback.

    1. I agree with someone else that at my level I could care less about the KOM in live segment mode. They're a professional and I've been cycling for 2 months. They're 30 seconds ahead of me 1 mile into a segment and I'm never catching up. I would suggest settings where you can configure whether you want to see your current time vs PR / vs KOM / vs fastest person you're following or fastest today, etc.

    2. What's really annoying is a segment that's 20 miles and has 10-20 shorter segments that make it up. The 20 mile segment just so happens to be the most popular and prioritized on my screen while I'd rather try to take down the shorter segment. I just read that I can back out of the segment and it should pick up the next one, but it would be nice if we had settings to configure how the segments appear. Popular, Starred, Short Segments, Long Segments so I don't have to keep touching my screen.

In short, Strava has made some assumptions on how we want the app to function but given us little ability to override these defaults using personalized settings/configurations.

  • Nice feature, but when running and using audio cues I would like to get feedback much more often, not just at 50% of the segment. What about every 10 seconds?

  • Hi there,

I've held the crown for a segment in my area for a few months now. I got a notification that someone beat it, so i looked at their "run" amd they accidentally chose run instead of ride, as they have run the segment much faster than the world record. How can we prevent this? I've also noticed cheating on other segments.

    Regards,
    Stephen

  • @Stephen H I don't think this page has anything to do with your issue.  Accidents happen. Short term and easy solution is to flag the other person's activity and let them know you think they made a mistake. You'll go back to having KOM until they decline your flag or correctly switch to ride. How to "prevent?" I'm not sure how you would go about doing this. Can't use speed as the fastest runner can run faster than some people ride their bikes.

  • Hello,

Love the live segments. Like Daniel, I can't cancel a segment that I am approaching or then entered into on iOS. Firstly, I am cycling on a circuit so along that circuit I have starred my fav segments and want to see the live segment and work towards my goal.

It is really frustrating because the live segment that always comes up consumes 3 laps of the circuit and therefore I can't see any other segments, particularly the one I have starred!

Any help please Elle or others?

  • I am a premium subscriber, however, cannot get the live segments to work on my galaxy s6 edge even though they are starred. Audio cues are enabled and volume is turned up to maximum but I get nothing whilst out riding . Any ideas to get it to work as it's slightly annoying and one of the reasons I subscribed?

  • hey guys. first , good job on keeping up with all it takes to make this a great app. I have a comment / suggestion.. It would b great if the segments were listed alphabetically on the devices. This would make it sooo much quicker on finding the seg that i want to interact with.. Thanks..

  • Some live segments dont start when passing them.

They are not shown as upcoming even though i am in the right position.

Some segments work, however. Cant see why.

I have tried to star the segment, without result.

I use the app on my iphone 6

  • Hello Strava 😉

Some live segments got "fake" COM's and CR's. Often because of gps-problems during the work-out..

That sucks for others chasing records :)

What can I / we do to fix those problems? I cant se any options where segmenttimes can be reported?

    OKH :)

  • How do you get this to work?
I have an iPhone, have starred all the segments but do not get the notification sounds on iPhone or Apple Watch.
Everything set as stated in the various articles?

  • I bought premium. I turned on notifications for segments (tried both chime and voice) and I only heard one chime from my Bluetooth speaker while riding and listening to Spotify. Is this an issue? It is the main reason I bought premium.. I am on Android.

  • Hi I really like the live segment facility but I would like to be able to switch off the popular segments and just use the ones I have starred for me I would like to use it to train against my own goal times as opposed to other people....any chance of this in an update? Many thanks paul

  • Hi. I would like to be able to use live segments in the phone offline as in the Garmin edge. Selecting them before the ride and then just go riding offline. Thanks

  • Great feature, but not really praticable, i do need:
    - offline mode: usefull to prevent udge battery usage.
    - Compare to PR, and show current rang while run/ride on the segment.
    - average speed is not accurate enougth , need a real time comparision.
    - possibility to choose manually between several segments when several segments are starting at the same location.
    - not just only segments mark as favorites (for this feature I would accept to be online ;) ).
    - send the actual gap to the watch when it is connected over bluetooth.

    Regards, Éric.
