E-bike setting by default

I have recently electrified my Quest velomobile and would like the ability to set e-bike by default so that my rides don't corrupt the efforts of the real cyclists.

Hey folks - I can definitely see the need for a feature like this. I'll try and get it into the pipeline, but for now I have no updates.

  • I love Strava! And I just got an ebike :)

I didn't want to mess with leaderboards - that's exactly why I love Strava - so after tracking my first ebike ride I noticed that on my ride tracked I can select activity type before saving "e-bike ride", which would keep it from the leaderboards... great.

However, it's troublesome, hidden and takes so many taps (on iPhone app), and likely to go amiss to change the activity every single time I log a ride.

Since ebikes are going mainstream, and arguably pose a threat to the core of Strava: leaderboards - I think it would be best to also include an bike type: "e-bike", and keep all the rides logged with this bike automatically off the leaderboards. (you can ask things like battery size Wh, and motor size in W - in addition to weight)

Most people don't want to cheat, but also if they have to go through menus every time the save an e-ride just to be morally correct, they simply won't care. It's better if they do it just once (add an e-bike to their gear), make it their default bike, and then just log their rides with little taps.

I ebike a couple of time a day, and am giving up manually going to every ride and changing the type, as I record the rides from my Apple Watch, and it does not even have that capability. So I am afraid I will annoy lots of people by spamming up their leaderboards. My default bike is the ebike so Strava should know the ride type. I guess when enough riders complain this feature may make it in.

    I second Curt's comment.

I use my Apple Watch to track my rides, but my daily commuter is an eBike (BOSCH Performance Line system).  While I normally ride it in OFF or ECO mode in the flats, when I have to ascend my plateau, I crank it up a bit.  This is why I got it, but unfortunately it throws off the leaderboards for the hills.

I have to go into Strava and invoke this setting for each ride that uses my eBike.  I set it whenever I use the assist function, even once.

I would like the option to have this default (or better, to associate the appliance with the bike used).  I have four other bicycles which are not eBikes, so I would want the option to change it back to Bike and then get the leaderboard statistics for those rides.  I use Strava through Apple Watch (commuting/hiking), Garmin EDGE 520 (recreational riding) and via iPhone (for times when my watch is unavailable for whatever reason).

I love the statistics because they push me and others to go harder; I do not want to skew them in any way.

I regularly ride an e-bike and two regular bikes. I'd like to set my e-bike as the default bike and have Strava automatically classify rides from that bike as "E-Bike Rides." That will ensure my e-bike doesn't mess up the regular leaderboards. If I do want "credit" for a ride where I rode unassisted, then it's easy enough to make that change.

  • Thanks for the responses all, but that does not hit the mark.  I am also a long term Strava customer and these days commute on an E-Bike and ride my other bikes for pleasure.  The iWatch (and many other devices) do not have a "Start E-Bike Ride"  You have to record a normal ride and remember to go back into Strava and reset it.  If you ride enough and are busy you will inevitably forget one or two which then pollutes the database until they are investigated.

Please let us set it as the default (or role out support to other devices).  We don't want to cheat.

  • Same here.

Also, please try to link the bikes to the categories.

For example, when you end your ride and push finish, it should ask which bike you rode. From your answer it should automatically choose the correct leader board to post the results to.

    Keep up the rad work!!

  • Yeah it mystifies me why you cannot flag a bike as an ebike. You are *required* to put the weight in, for some reason, yet they can't add an ebike flag so the activity defaults to E-Bike Ride! That said the bike info has been in dire need for update for ages - it still only lists "sports" bikes and no utility/city/hybrid/cargo bikes. What am I supposed to choose for my bakfiets with electric-assist? I set it as a "road bike" because it's a "bike" I use on the "road", but it couldn't be farther from a "road bike".

  • I'm about to give up on the Strava development team for doing anything that people actually want.  I'm starting to reconsider my Premium subscription and the use of Strava in general, if they don't start looking at what people say - I'm out entirely.

Take this for instance, I have had about enough on Sunday and posted about it: https://www.instagram.com/p/Bo7-zxDHYaz/?taken-by=gregoriousmaximous

They keep adding new "features" like sudden bombardment of emails or the annoying screenshot dialog, but for things that are actually useful, they turn a blind eye.

The software feels "spammier" with each subsequent update.

Even the most basic stuff is not there - for instance - what about the Apple Watch?  How about even just adding an eBike feature there and with the app itself, where you can pick "Start E-Bike Ride"?  That would be a great start.  eBike by default would be perfect; my default bike is Trek XM700+.  My other four bikes are not eBikes.

Moreover, I have this continued issue with Strava where my eBike ride selection doesn't save always after update, it will revert to "Ride", and I have to change it three or four times before it stays as "E-Bike Ride".  It is VERY important to me, as a very active and self-competitive cyclist (I am in the Top 10 on some climbs, and the top 10% on many local climbs in the Seattle region) to ensure data integrity for my PRs and KOMs.  However, realistically I commute on an eBike - I love to ride, but everything is uphill in every direction where I need to be, and that only goes so far when you're dressed up in work attire when you're engaging in business during the day on a bike without assist - something will give eventually.  I hope that it will be Strava.

We have discussed this feature long enough - please be more accommodating to eBikes.

    Please.

  • Greg, your comment has been resonating with me since you wrote it. I just cancelled my Summit subscription. I'll gladly renew it as soon as it seems that Strava starts working towards making my life easier.

  • So I can set a default bike - Strava just needs to let me designate it as an E bike.

  • I have the same problem. Just converted my trike to a pedalec and would still like to use Strava to monitor my progress but I don't want to screw up the leaderboard for regular bicyclists.

I did just selecte "Hide from Segment Leaderboards" on my account's privacy but what would be best would be a leaderboard and other related stuff for e-bikes (and e-trikes too!)

  • Scott,

There's a separate category for e-bikes. Please select that when uploading your activities to keep your activity separate from the leaderboards and challenges.

    Cheers.

  • I agree you should be able to set this as default in "My gear" > My Bikes" my Mrs uses a e-bike and she can't be arsed to go into strava and change it twice a day when she rides. How hard can it be for strava to make a small release to solve it?

e-bikes are very popular these days and strava is way behind in development and I think they are focusing on the social part too much and not the actual cycling app improvements in my opinion.

  • 3 years since Strava acknowledged that this would be a useful feature - but still no action. Not sure my Aus$82 a year is worth it anymore...

  • Is the only way to get motion on this to start a boycott of Strava? I'm not signed up as a premium user because of this poor e-Bike integration.

  • Scott, you can also do this in Strava afterwards by choosing Edit (to the right in the webinterface), and then change value in the drop-down menu "Sport".

  • I too would like to have an option to flag a bike as an e-bike. I've installed an aftermarket kit to my bike and it is really annoying to have to modify every event after every ride.

  • Donal - it appears you still can't "set" your bike as an e-bike.  You have to go in and edit each ride after you complete it and set it as an e-bike ride, which will automatically remove you from the leaderboards.  After you save your ride, tap the title to see more details on it.  On an iphone, looks like this:

Tap the three dots in the upper right corner, then tap Edit, then tap Sport:

That will give you the option to select E-Bike ride.

    From Strava support (https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/216919507-Segment-Leaderboard-Guidelines):

Use the E-bike Ride and Virtual Ride activity types:

To preserve the fairness and accuracy of the leaderboards for the Ride activity type, use the available E-bike Ride and Virtual Ride activity types or adjust your activity's privacy controls to "Only You" or "Followers" (these controls will remove the activity from public leaderboards).
