Show Starred Segments on a map

It sucks that starred segments are so incomplete. The current implementation makes long lists of starred segments unusable. Viewing starred segments on a map would be an easy way to improve the usability of starred segments, especially for longer lists. Here's a product case for this:

- Show starred segments on a map so they are usable. The map encourages the activity of starring, because now they can be viewed by location during riding or ride planning. The current implementation sorts by chronology and shows segment name, neither of which are particularly helpful when planning a route, especially over long periods of time or when the list is long.

- Improved usability leads to more users starring segments, as they can continue to get utility from additional starring.

- More users starring segments will lead to a stronger signal to differentiate between segments that users actually care about as opposed to noise or similar but flawed segments. This signal can inform algorithms for prioritizing segment playback from rides or browsed segments in the segment explorer.

  • Was just about to request a map of all starred segments. Hard to believe they don't have this as a option on Segment Explore.

  • Was looking for the same solution. But we are one year further so Strava, did you manage to build it? Can't be hard.

  • One more vote for this. Also allow to sort the lists by climb category, meters climbed, distance and etc.

  • I've made this page: https://strava.bouncingfox.co.uk as I really wanted this now I've moved to another country and got lots of recommendations of routes/climbs to ride. I found it impossible to collate them all together to see where they are relative to each other on Strava. Hopefully this page will help others too.
It uses the Strava API and just links to your account to show your starred segments on a Google map (no data is collected and stored). I hope it helps anyone having a similar issue.
Please let me know if it is useful or you have any ideas or suggestions.

  • Garmin has a maximum 100 starred segments in the head unit (which is ridiculous), but they don't listen to their customers (why we're all going over to Wahoo) and are showing no signs of upping it.
Therefore having a way of changing which 100 I want starred out of a different group, say "saved" segments, would mean I could chop and change the ones I have on my head unit, depending on where I'm planning on riding. Having a map to do such a search/save would be brilliant. For example, I need all the starred segments I have in Belgium right now, as I'm off there next week. But to search through my list of 800ish starred segments to find them will take an age. Of course un-starring all those that I so painstakingly starred in the first place will take even longer and be VERY annoying!

  • Richard Mayhew great map! It does what we all want here in this thread. Do you think it will be possible to add some sort of filter for the segments which are shown? Category (1,2,3,4,HC), alphabetical order or something along that line?

  • HI Peter,

Yes, this should be possible. At the moment the page isn't very scalable hence limiting to 30 segments per page but it can be redesigned to get more details then do some filtering.

I will have a look and post back if i get this to work. Probable won't be for a while though.

    Cheers, Richard

  •  Hi All,

I have finally got around to updating the Starred Segment Explorer (https://strava.bouncingfox.co.uk/Starred_Segments.php). The site now syncs the segments with Strava which makes filtering easier - styling is a bit crude at the moment but will work on that. At the moment you can filter by category as requested but adding more filters should be easy enough if anyone has any requests.

Let me know what you think.

    Cheers,

    Richard

  • Hi Richard,

It looks great and is now so much easier to find the segments you need. May be strava will be interested to implement your idea.... some day.

  • Richard Mayhew,  Just found this thread, excellent map!  I just wondered is it possible to see your current location on the map so you can see you proximity to segments and how to get to them?

  • Hi Dale,

That sounds like something that could be added to the Google map layer underneath, i will  take a look at adding in the next round of updates.

    Thanks,

    Richard

  • Hi,

I have now updated this so it will request current location and jump to it if available. If current location is not available then the location on your Strava profile will be used as before. There is no marker where your current location is at the moment as this isn't a default Google maps API feature neither is the button to zoom to your current location. The map will just centre on load/re-load. I'll look at adding a current location marker and a "refresh current location button" at a later date.

Enjoy! As always let me know if you have any other ideas / requests.

    Cheers,

    Richard

  • Still no map of starred segments in Strava?

how about adding this functionality to apps running on Garmin devices (or other supporting data from Strava)

  • This is a no-brainer. Please, pretty please! We riders create all of these segments for Strava, but actually using them in a productive way is pretty hard.

  • Hey Richard,

    does your site still work?

    https://strava.bouncingfox.co.uk/Starred_Segments.php?Auth=true

I get this error, after I click on "Conenct"...

    {"message":"Bad Request","errors":[{"resource":"Authorize","field":"scope","code":"invalid"}]}

  • Strava have updated the authentication method, it looks like the library I was using doesn't support the new method. I will have to take a look when I get time. I'll post back here when it is working again.

  • The site is working again, you will need to re-authorise with Strava after 6 hours at the moment, logins will not be remembered.

I am working on updating at the moment so this isn't needed and the new authorisation system is fully implemented.

Just in case it is helpful to you or others, Wahoo Elemnt products can store unlimited starred segments (I have about 1000) it only limited by storage space which is about 2 GB (depends on volume of world maps you have downloaded)

  • As requested by someone who got in contact directly I have now added the option to filter segments by their length on the starred segment map (https://strava.bouncingfox.co.uk). Please let me know if there are any issues or other ideas to make this more user friendly.
