Beacon automatic email

The feature request is for Strava to automatically send an email on activity start.

At present, beacon uses a manual process to send an SMS to a recipient, this requires a manual step on the Android or IOS device, and then if the recipient wants to "watch" the activity on a computer, they need to copy and paste the link into a different application (such as an email client) to get it to their desktop. If the link is sent to a user that does not have a smartphone, they would need to manually retype the link into a web browser.

The recipient obviously needs a web browser to be able to open the link, I would reasonably presume that anyone that has a web browser also has email.

If Strava were able to send an email directly from the Strava infrastructure, on activity start it would remove teh currect manual steps required.

Anyone that receives the link on a smartphone will still be able to open the link, and anyone that receives the link on a desktop will be able to open the link.

Managing email recipients could be done from the web interface or the smartphone app.

The cost to Strava of sending email is minimal.

  • Agree, the beacon start process should definitely be streamlined.

  • Road ID has been offering this feature.  Besides the direct email sent out (which you can customize), it tracks your progress and will send out an alarm email if you have been stationary for too long (time can be customized).  It also sends out an email when you are done riding.   Seems like easy-peasy app enhancements to me.

  • Beacon is a useful feature. But starting it should be streamlined. As of now, every time you want to start it you need to :

    1 start the activity
    2 select beam
3 select which app to use to send the SMS
4 click send on the SMS
    5 click start activity

All of this while having network coverage.

I propose to add a setting that allows the user to send the beacon and automatically every time a new activity is started on Strava. I, for one, don't care for SMS costs (I basically only use it to send those beam sms' ...) But those 4 extra steps take time when what I want is to just start riding.

  • Chiming in, I joined Strava Premium largely for beacon texts, but in practice I frequently don't use them because of the inconvenience of the flow. I never want to not send my contact information to my emergency contact, so I wish I could either turn on automatic sending or have a static link they could always see me at.

  • I decided that beacon was too much faff and got a Wahoo Element, which with the app running on the phone, automatically sends emails when I press start on the Element, much simpler than Strava Beacon, and as the main reason I was paying for premium was for beacon, cancelled premium...

  • I agree, this fuction is necessary. A simple button that launch the e-mail client of the smartphone, whith the beacon text, It will be a good start.

  • "A simple button that launch the e-mail client of the smartphone"

While this would be better than launching a SMS client, what I am suggesting is to send an email from Strava servers, so it can be just a single button press.

  • Oh yeah. That would be grear. Or a link that always works for my safety contact whenever I use Strava. Maybe with possibility to disable it in case I don't want it.

  • I would prefer an option to create static links which I can forward to safety contacts. It should be possible to add a description and to invalidate/delete them later.
