I’m trying to find out can you send the beacon from your phone and then start an activity on your watch an be tracked on the beacon still?

Athletes, thanks for your patience. We’re thrilled to have an update on this for you. Now, you can share your location with loved ones while you track your live stats, directly on Apple Watch with Beacon. And with cellular watch service, you can even leave your phone at home while you’re out riding or running and still use Beacon. We’re hoping that helps make the feature easier to use. Learn more about Beacon here:

  • Apparently you cannot use The beacon in your watch. Only on your phone. I purchase the full version to be able To leave my phone at home whilst out running only to realise it can’t be done so I had a refund. Sort yourself out strava

  • At least let us start one from our Watch.  I have a series two.  BTW, now that you are breaking out all the premium services into different packages it makes it more important to get these things working.  Also, don't go down the path of nickel and diming everyone to death.

  • The only work around is to start a ride on the phone and on the watch at the same time. Then delete the app ride when done since it lacks heart rate data. Might as well use Glympse or some other location sharing tech if it's this big of a pain for free.

Technically speaking, you will need a network connection to send back your location, so without a phone or new v3 watch cellular connection, this can only be possible with your phone and watch together.

Stands responded in another forum this is not a high priority for them in Feb, 2018. It might be time to get my money back and look for a new app. The bad thing is I already convinced a few friends to get the app.

  • Yes-  Please enable Beacon from the Strava app that runs on my Apple Watch.  I do not want to have to take my phone with me when I run.   - Thank you.

  • Enabling Beacon from Apple Watch, and leaving iPhone at home, would only work if your Watch has cellular, right?
Do not think those are widely available in Europe.....

But the option to at least enable Beacon from the watch would be appreciated
(even if i needed to take my phone with me)

  • Just signed up to premium for a number of reasons, but wanted to use beacon with my Apple Watch (I've got a series two). I get that beacon needs a network connection to work and I generally run with my watch and my phone in my pocket.

The watch gives me HR data which the phone does not so at a minimum you should be able to either start the run on your phone and have your watch detect that strava has started on the phone and then display and feed back that information into one run.

The better option would be to enable beacon on the watch if it has a connection to your phone and bring up a waring that beacon will only work as long as you phone is in range of you watch. That way we can just start everything from the watch including beacon.

I take my phone with me regardless but don't want to have to look at it while running it's just there for emergencies and I think this fits into that category. Since its winter now and I'm mostly running after work in the dark, rain, mud and cold it would be useful.

    Please sort Strava!

  • I mountain bike on my own 2-3 times per week.  Including at night in the dark over the winter months.  The Beacon feature on Strava gives me and my wife peace of mind.  I have recently bought an Apple Watch 4 and I am very disappointed that I cannot use the Beacon feature from the watch App.  I echo all of the previous comments that Strava needs to figure out a way to do this, either from the watch, or by allowing the watch to recognise when an activity has started on the phone.
