Can't get Strava on Apple Watch after changing to iPhone 8

Since changing my iPhone to iPhone 8, I can't open the app on my Apple Watch. I'v deleted the App on both the phone and the watch several times, and reinstalled it, and also switched to motion and fitness with of and on a few times.Any suggestions? This is really frustrating. Has any found a similar (better) app that works? or found a solution?

  • I have exactly the same problem. I have tried uninstalling, installing, turning off/on etc. The watch says Welcome. Go to the phone and logon ... This is all done and a tick is beside Apple Watch. I hope it’s fixed soon as I like to run without taking the phone. So it’s IPhone 8 and Applewatch 3

  • Lost the Strava app from starting approx 4 weeks ago after two IOS updates from Apple on my iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch 3.

    previously was working perfectly.

Strava Support wanted to help, but after telling to do the basic uninstall / reinstall, motion off then on......I was bored of them having no idea what to do next.

its not your IPhone 8. It’s the IOS updates. Thank you Apple.

    Strava! KEEP UP!!

  • I am having the same problem.  Strava, you can't say that you have an app that works on the Apple Watch if it doesn't work on the Apple Watch.  This is unbelievably annoying.  I will tell my coach about the problem and suggest that he consider having all of his athletes move away from Strava to another program if this is going to be a widespread problem.  Is there any timeline on fixing this?  Is anyone even working on it?

  • Having the exact same issue - gutted! Has anyone successfully got around this? I have a message on my watch that simply says - Welcome. On your phone , log in or sign up using the Strava app. The strava app is happily sitting on my phone and seemingly on my watch but the watch app won't open.

I would be very grateful of a fix if anyone has one. Not reallt wanting to run with my phone...

  • Unfortunately, as of now, there is no fix.  I just updated the IOS and the problem still is persisting.  Strava is either not following this line of posts or has nothing to say, since there has been no response from them.  Hopefully at some point this will be remedied.  For now, I'm running using Strava on my iPhone, which is not as good because I don't hold it in my hand so I can't see data in real time.

  • Hopefully, just getting the updated watch iOS will then match the iOS 11 with the phone, then they will both sync properly with the Strava app

  • I don't know how it happened but I now have it all working fine. It seemed to fix itself about a week after I first reported it. Running the latest updates on iPhone 8 and iWatch 3 and very happy with it now.

  • Great news. I felt the same about when the upgrades killed the issue.
Why did Strava do nothing to assist with this issue?

  • I have this same issue since upgrading to iPhone 8. My I watch 2 just tells me to log into strava on my phone which I already have done. I have tried all the advice on here but no success.

  • I had this issue and the same with Nike run club! Tried everything to no avail until I decided to unpair the watch and phone then pair them again. Didn’t think it had worked to start with so gave up, just got back in from a couple hours walking thought I’d just try again and both apps are working! Happy days

  • Same issue, updated my iPhone 6 to the new iPhone XR, now I cannot open Strava on my Apple Watch 3. It always says "On your phone, log in or sign up using the Strava app". But when opening the app on the phone it doesn't work.

I have done same as comments above, deleted the app from both devices several times and reinstalled and gave permission on Strava app to the watch again but to no avail.

All software, phone, watch and strava app are up to date but nothing.

For some of the posters above it appears to have resolved by itself, I hope it's the same for me, let's see how long I need to wait.

Strava, any leads on this issue?

  • I found a solution on another thread that worked for me.

Uninstall the app on the iPhone and the Watch. Turn off both iPhone and Watch. Give it a few minutes and then turn on again. Then install the Strava app on the iPhone again and ensure it is loaded to the Watch also. Open the Strava app on the iPhone and leave it open, then open on the Watch and all done!

  • I think I found a solution!

Well it worked for me anyway.

I was having exactly the same problem.

Tried repairing my watch, deleting and installing apps, logging in and out, just about everything and still couldn't get it to work.

Then used the oldest trick in the book....

Turned the Apple watch off and then back on.

    Boom. Fixed.

  • Tried all of the above and it is stil not working.

I get stuck at the beweging en conditie.

Can not flag it and if i push on it, it brings me to the strava settings in the iPhone settings. But i would not know what to do there.

Consequence is i can not press finish either.

  • I have this problem whenever I upgrade a phone. Sometimes, I can only get Strava to reconnect when I get to my home WiFi - work’s WiFi will not allow watch and device to connect.

It’s usually not Strava that is the problem, but the network you are trying to use Strava on perhaps.

  • I had this problem too after upgrading my iPhone - after uninstalling and reinstalling the app on my phone and watch multiple times with no help I followed the instructions from Juan-Pablo-R- (above in this thread) and it finally work after an hour of trying!!
    What a silly bug!

  • I had this problem after I got a new iPhone XR. Turning devices off and back on didn’t help. What finally worked for me was this: I opened Strava on my phone, tapped “More”, then “Settings”, then “Connect a new device to Strava.” Even though it was my phone, not my watch, that was new, the phone wasn’t recognizing my watch until I went through this step.

  • I have this same problem after replacing (due to hardware failure) an iPhone XS with another iPhone XS and restoring everything from iCloud backup.  The watch and the phone are definitely talking to each other - I can uninstall and install the watch app.  I am on the absolute latest version of iOS and WatchOS and the Strava app.  Why is this still an issue for the app?

Follow-up: the only thing that worked for me was to delete both Watch and iPhone apps, restart both devices, re-install Strava on iPhone, go through the whole process of authorizing the app with Apple Health, etc., and verify that it was installed on Watch as well, and then go through the steps of connecting the watch from scratch.  And of course, forgetting to adjust the watch app preferences for kilometers instead of miles and split announcements until after my first run...  It seems like there should be a much less painful way for this to be accomplished that is easy for users to discover on their own without having to resort to Support discussion threads.  Surely people replace/upgrade their phones all the time?

  • Has anyone else tried @Roger's suggestion?

Open Strava on your phone > “More” > “Settings” > Applications, Services, and Devices > Connect a new device to Strava > Apple Watch

  • I bought the Series 3 Apple watch yesterday and couldn't get Strava app to launch on it.  Watch was running watch OS 5.1.X.  Strava support (replied in 90 minutes, btw!) and suggested that I make sure watch OS was updated to 5.2.  Making that update fixed the issue for me.  Thanks!  John

  • I’m still having this problem. iPhone X and Series 4 Apple Watch latest software versions. I’ve tried all of the advice in this thread to no avail. Each time when I click the icon on the watch it looks like it will open then just goes back to the app menu screen.

Very frustrating because this app is one of the main reasons I got the watch.

  • Jeff and Roger’s tip didn't work for me. I used the app on Thursday no problem but this morning I could not open Strava on my watch. I tried all the steps mentioned in this thread but still nothing. My watch is only a year old. It is very frustrating, what do I now?! :-(

  • I finally got it working.
For me the problem was that Strava doesn’t initially appear in Motion & Fitness under Privacy settings so the strava setup seems to get confused.
I uninstalled Strava and reinstalled and Strava appeared already ticked Green in Motion & Fitness under Privacy.
When you set up Apple Watch again in Strava the other 3 settings sync but still not the Motion and fitness setting as it is still confused as it’s now ticked in the background already and setup isn’t expecting that.
I went in and unticked and ran setup again in Strava and it allowed me to allow Strava in IPhone Privacy > Motion & Fitness and finished the setup.
    Hope that makes sense.
