Strava not recording in background

Not sure if there is a workaround or just a setting that I'm missing. My Strava app doesn't record in the background and I'm sure it used to.

Did a lot of rides last year and never had an issue (apart from battery usage), I would open the app, press 'Record Activity' and then ignore it until I was done and hit Finish.

Now, I open the app, hit 'Record Activity' and then look at a blank read out at the end of my ride as the app didn't record anything as soon as it went in my pocket.

Is there anything I need to enable to allow the app to record even though the screen is locked? Or do I need to set the screen to not lock for as long as I'm using it??

Thanks

  • Have a look here, at least if you have a Xiaomi / MIUI-based device.

Other android-based systems might have similar adjustments.

  • Hi, I have also recently started to have this issue, my last 3 recordings have not completed when I go back to the app after I finish, it's as if the app has shut its self down

Please can you explain what to do? I have already uninstalled and re-installed the app

    Kind Regards

  • Hello Strava support. Same issue as Peter on Samsung Galaxy NOTE 9. Always worked fine until recently. Now nothing records as soon as phone in standby. Could not locate all the settings Thorsten suggests on the galaxy OS.

A Strava response here would help us all

    Kind regards, Troy

  • Hi all. Strava support provided a workaround. If you have same problem I encourage you to raise a ticket with them...and encourage these articles to be updated where fixes available.

  • I have a similar problem on Samsung S7, which started after the 2018 November update. The location is not captured when the screen is off, but if I turn it on mid ride, it will record that location. At the end of the ride my course looks like a trapezoid with straight lines. This is probably not a problem with Strava since other aspects on my phone started acting up at the same time, but if Strava has a known workaround, it would be great, until I get a new non-samsung phone. <rant> Samsung tech support says its a hardware problem and I need a new phone, I know it is not because it does work, in some conditions, so the hardware is good, it is just their software update, that is probably designed to semi-break the phone, convincing the user its time to get their new models. </rant>. I tried all the suggestions for permission and power settings, reinstalling the app, wiping the cache, and wiping the the whole phone.

  • I've had the same issue on Samsung Note 8 since I started using it nearly 12 months ago. I usually run with battery saving level "mid", but today I found that it kept recording with battery saving off. The last time I tried turning it off a few months back it made no difference, so something has changed. I have Life360 installed so the family can locate me and I can be located regardless of battery saver mode, so I don't think it has anything to do with location services shutting down.

  • Team, my app has been working well over the last year. However, this last week it has failed to record two runs and a bike ride. Have a new Samsung S8. Would be grateful for any ideas? Joe

  • Neil, I eventually worked out that the Strava Ap does not function if you have the power saving mode turned on, on your phone. JS

  • Glad that I’m not the only one. I’ve heard many jokes on my self due to this problem. Also with Samsung Galaxy S7.

  • Can someone just answer this? Why does Strava no longer carry on recording when the screen is locked and how do I resolve it?????????

  • I am currently having this problem as well as I switched from an iphone to Samsung S9. My activity is not recording at all when my phone screen is on standby. The app screen has to be in the ENTIRE TIME of the activity in order for my it to be tracked and that is a huge battery killer! Please let me know how I can fix this!

  • I've had my S8 for over 9 months and been frustrated with the Strava app not working. Tried running without a case different locations on my bike, nothing works. previous phone (S4) worked great.I just shut off battery saver mode. fingers crossed. Thank you for the info

Why doesn't Strava respond to this thread? Obviously people are having issues

  • I'm having the same issue.  Strava worked well for a couple of years and then probably 6 months ago, it started recording intermittently.  Have uninstalled/reinstalled and played with all the power settings, but nothing seems to make a difference.

Saw several earlier references to opening a ticket with Strava.  How do you do that?

  • I have an s7 and I have the same issues. It seems madness to me that strava just arrogantly assume everyone will spend 200 pounds every time a new model phone comes out. What's the work around strava? You seem to think it's ok for people to turn their phone to its least economical function just to get it working but gps still doesn't work. Ive installed and uninstalled 3 times now and it still doesn't work. Apple is 40% of the market so you are dismissing 60%! Some help would be nice.

  • I have the similar issue with my S8. It doesn't work when my screen is off. And power saving is NOT turned on for me, as some suggested.
This is frustrating, if I dont get an answer from Samsung I am going to switch to iPhone in a couple of month

  • Similar issue. I just did an hour's run and strava tells me that I have done 38 min. Very frustrating, to learn that I have lost 20 min of running time and that has affected pace and distance. I have no clue how much I ran. This has happened a few times before too.

Very annoyed!! Any fixes please? (I just checked...my power saving mode is off.so that is not the culprit...)

Mine is a samsung galaxy j5.

  • Same issue on Moto 5 phone. Not on battery saver. It starts off looking like it's recording, put it in my pocket, run for 40 mins and then take it out and it's recorded nothing. Been happening every run for the last month or so. Cycling recording seems to be fine.
