Bring Back Chronological Ordering and Add Filters

As should be obvious from the 600+ (as of the time of this writing) downvotes on this announcement, Strava users did not ask for, nor want, an algorithm to decide their newsfeed.

https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/115000086764-Feedback-for-the-updated-Strava-feed

This should be reverted back to the old chronological feed and FILTERS should be added for things we want or don't want.

Examples are:

  • Challenge Reports (Way too many)
  • Challenge Accomplished (Might want to see completed, but don't care about percent updates)
  • Date Range (Useful for finding that ride you went on together, or they talked about)
  • Follower List (A de/select all, select club, select only A, B, C rider)
  • Ride Length (i.e. don't show rides shorter than 10mi as it's most likely a commute I might not care about)
  • Ride Duration (similar idea to ride length, cut out things that are 30min or less, 10 min or less, or whatever length you want)
  • Activity Type (Ride, Run, Swim, Hike, Virtual Ride, Commute, Race) Some runners don't care if their triathlete buddies rode their bike, some cyclists don't care if their triathlete buddy went for a run. Neither care if they went for a swim :-)

There are probably other filters people may want, but the idea is that people CHOOSE what they want to see, not Strava's learning algorithm. My choices change day to day, some days I feel like reading through challenge reports (okay, probably not), some days I care about rider A, B, C, or perhaps I haven't seen rider D in a while at the weekly club ride, check what he's done (okay, I could go to his profile). Maybe I'm thinking I got off late today, check and see if rider E, F, and G have already gone riding.

When you give us more choice we'll find creative ways to use them, ways that I haven't even outlined here. Limit our choices and we may go elsewhere that gives us choice.

  • I'm not a power user, I just want the option for chronological order.  I follow several running/biking athletes on my newsfeed, but my wife is a walker. Several of us are trying to encourage her to continue walking with kudos, etc. Finding her activities in my feed is difficult because running or biking activities from 2-3 weeks ago take priority over her walk from this morning.

C'mon Strava, either listen to your users or create the perfect environment for a competing app to steal them away.

  • I've found a third party chrome extension called "Stravini" that gives you the choice between Strava's special sauce algorithm and Chronological Ordering. It also allows one to hide the following:

    • Challenges
    • Club notifications
    • Posts
    • Promotional Messages
    • Zwift rides
    • Rides shorter than ____ mi

I'm still not renewing premium until Strava fixes this, but for now it is at least a work around that works well and proves that it is a simple fix if Strava cared.

  • The algorithm feed sucks. Please add an option for chronological order please. If you're worried people are not seeing what they want then add filters.

  • Algorithms are awful for users, but Strava doesn't care about users.

I emailed and got this ridiculous non-response: "The new design is more modular and flexible to showcase all the different types of content better. However, activities remain at the heart of the feed, with photos, maps and achievements more prominently displayed, so your efforts get the attention they deserve."

Time to look for an alternative?

  • Funny how the dipsh*t developers allow you to sort the comments in this forum in whatever way you see fit, but don’t allow users to have their feed in chronological order on the app. Makes absolutely no sense that they don’t listen to their users on this. BS. Chalk me up as another who will not renew. We have choices.

  • Year's using this app and the non-chronological new order is making me use another platform to track my activities.
Not addressing this problem is unrespectful towards users to say the least.

  • My year ran out a few months ago, and I do miss some of the premium (now Summit) features, but not enough to go back. I've started using other platforms for my analysis, and this is purely for the segments and friends. If they were to migrate also I would stop using Strava all together.

  • I hate the non-chronological feed too.

Here is a link to their survey about the feed.

    Have at it.

  • How is a chronological feed not an option?  Who at Strava thought removing it entirely and forcing their algorithm on us was a good idea?

  • Sans déconner, j'en ai marre de me faire diriger par de l'intelligence artificielle, je veux avoir le choix, je veux décider de ce qui s'affiche et dans quel ordre cela se fait ! #bringbackchronological

WTF, i'm tired of being driven by IA, i want to choose, i want to decide for what is displayed and its order ! #bringbackchronological

  • I am fed up with having to sort through things that Strava thinks I want to see. Just list the activities in chronological order. It's not hard, give us the option to use our own brain, not yours. Got to say that you are opening doors for a competitor.

  • Same here, I always miss new runs from my friends because Strava thinks that giving kudo means I prefer seeing old runs over new runs.

Please add an option to bring back the chronological order.

  •  I hate the alogarithm. I pay for  Strava, and I want the chronological order back. I am not interested in what you - Strava - think. How strava should look.

But maybe you are not able to get it back to chronological order? No wonder there are less kudos as it is nearly impossible to watch now even the activities of only about 50 friends.

I think your "exitness" you share only with yourself. I find your logarithm beneath and beyond ...

But I think you are not really interested in what your customers want?

You will not be excited though if the paying members leave.

  • Come on Strava.  If you want to be a social network platform so much, follow them once more: to allowing an option for a chronological feed.

  • Come on Strava, how is a chronological feed not an option? A social website without most recent activities. Seeing cycles from people 3 and 4 days ago.

Please add an option to bring back the chronological order, and change of units metres/kms/miles per activity as well.

  • Really, why is this so difficult? Give us the chrono order as an option.  Businesses that don't listen to their customers never do as well as those that do. Amazon's mantra is focus on what's right for the customer. Get with it.

  • I felt strongly about it. So I canceled my subscription. Unfortunately I had paid for a year. But when it expires I will no longer be a summit member.

  • I admit that I just let my subscription lapse (I was sure they would have fixed it soon so I didn't need to worry about cancelling and rejoining). Now though it has lapsed and I am using other platforms and they are working well. If the chronological feed came back then I would rejoin, at the moment...

The upside of this though is that as other platforms get more users they also get more development dollars and effort and are getting better and better. I suspect strava's decision to enforce their ordering on our feeds is so that they can then sell advertising at a higher price, but that won't work for long as they get less and less people viewing the feed.

Overall, very disappointing lack of customer service.

  • I will not be renewing my subscription, the beacon is the only added bonus and if you look there are alternatives that are free. Why not have it fixed?

It cannot be worth anything if enough people leave

  • Come on strava show some respect to your customers and try to show you even care a little bit.

You tested this out and this feature has received the largest ever feedback of any strava feature, and all negative

Yet you're still persisting with this. It shows you don't listen to customers

    Cancelled my subscription too

  • I was totally shocked to find out today that I had missed numerous activities from friends all due to non-chronological order!  I can't believe the hassle this has caused users and how many are leaving or plan to leave their paid subscription.  Frequent users, myself included, are begging and pleading with Strava to fix this issue.  What is the end game here?

  • As someone who only follows a couple of dozen friends, having to hunt deep into the feed to find who did something recently causes irritation.

If I was following hundreds in Strava I could understand a smart perdonalised algorithmic feed could work, but even then I'd want a chronological option.

After all, there is a time and a place for everything.
