Apple Watch heart rate in the iPhone app

I'd like to use my iPhone as a bike computer and my Apple Watch as my heart rate sensor.   Is it possible to get real-time heart rate data onto the iPhone strava app while biking and also have this included in the workout data?

  • Yes, the iPhone and Apple Watch apps should work as one

  • This was the case at one point when the Apple Watch was first released, but was removed some time after.

Not being able to do this is a pain, as it means that I have to sacrifice cadence and other Bluetooth sensor data if I execute activities from the watch; or sacrific heart rate data if I start the activity from the iPhone.

  • What's the latest word on this Strava folks? I was very happy to have ditched the HR strap at the gym. Now that I am riding again, I would love to do the same. Do I have it correct that I need to chose between the Watch app and strapless HR or iPhone app and saved routes?

  • Any news on if this is going to happen. No point to buy another heart rate monitor when I have an expensive and great one on my wrist. Crazy I have to use both the watch app and iPhone app if I want to see segments while riding and also get heart data. Not sure I will keep the paid parts of my strava account if this doesn’t work.

  • Here here. Plenty of free apps out there manage to do it. We pay good money to strava. Why can’t you sort this out?

  • I let my summit membership expire this January. The lack of communication and action on a request like this when competitors have seemed to figure it out pretty quickly is frustrating.

  • Agree, I have signed in for the free trial. However will not subscribe if heart rate issue not resolved by Strava.

  • Hey Strava Folks, could we at least get some sort comment here? At the very least an explanation as to why this is difficult? It does seem like you don't care about your paying customers. I'm with Travis B, Andrew H and Christopher V on this one, except I paid for a year, so you got me until December. Believe me when I say I will be looking for other methods over the next nine months and make a decision. I like the web site a lot, but I will stop paying for Summit and/or leave the Strava ecosystem long before I quit the Apple one.

  • @Charles - Unfortunately, I don't have an update for you. I passed this feature request along to our Product Managers and if I learn any information, I'll be sure to let you all know. Cheers.

  • @Jeff is there a way to prioritize this at all?  It's surprising you can't get a status update out of the PMs, even if it's to see where this feature is at in terms of implementation.  It's a pretty glaring omission and an annoyance every time we cycle (or run).  I've already advised a couple of people to not bother with the app if they're ok with not having a cycle computer.

  • Appreciate the feedback, Nathan. I'll send over your post to them.

Unfortunately, the Community Forum is just one component of the decision-making process to add new features and enhancements.

  • @jeff please let product management know that not having the option to use apple watch as an HRM in Strava is a serious show stopper. Prevent churn. Give us a target date.

  • @ Jeff - I understand that community forums are only one channel of input into the design process. There are two underlying thoughts to almost every comment in this thread  and they are:

    1) It seems unreasonable that this feature has not already happened. Apple is on to version 4 of the watch.

    2) Strava has not been responsive enough to paying customers as to why the feature has not happened or even when it will happen.

The input you are getting from us is that this channel should rise in importance in the Design, Customer Support and Sales Departments.

I'll put it this way: If you drew a three circle Venn diagram with a circle for Strava customers, Apple Watch owners and owners that want this feature to happen now, I'd guess the last two circles would be nearly concentric. And if you limited the Watch owners to paying customers, that would tighten up even more. And if Strava keeps dragging it's heels, that last circle will shrink.

  • This is disappointing to read. I was hoping to use my Apple Watch with my Stages Power Meters, and put everything into one Strava activity. I need this data for my coach. I'm also a paying customer requesting this addition, but two years ago when I left RunKeeper for Strava people were asking to let us edit the starting mileage on our shoes and Strava is STILL ignoring that request. I'm starting to get the feeling the folks at Strava don't like money.

If anyone know of an alternative that will allow me to dump data straight from Zwift and dump data straight from Apple Watch and my power meters, I'd love to know. At this point, I'll pay good money to find a solution for all my running, cycling, and swimming needs.

While searching for this answer online, I found a post from 2017 with more than 160 comments and then this one with another 21, but so far seems that Strava doesn't even have anything to say about it. Very disappointing! I will start looking for other methods to track my rides other than Strava.

  • Seriously? This is ridiculous. I am also canceling my premium due to this.

  • I absolutely agree! I am also considering canceling my premium if Strava can't work this out (along with a couple of other VERY basic recording issues). Seriously. What are you using the money we pay to use the app for???

  • I’m pretty surprised. I use the under armor apps and they all use the Apple Watch heart monitor. Seems like it should be a fairly easy thing to sort out. MapMyRide maybe is best alternative, then load it into Strava with HealthFit?

  • Just signed up for a month trial! I’m going to cancel after knowing it’s not possible. I don’t have to buy a different heart monitor because Strava have an agreement with them. I would rather keep using Apple Watch. This is ridiculous!!!

  • Bump - After reading this I downloaded and had a look at MapMyRide for the first time in years; loads of features, very impressed. Specifically looking to use Apple Watch as HR monitor. Come on Strava!
