Galaxy Watch and Strava

OK; so I'm initially a little disappointed. I've been following Samsung's Galaxy watch for some time, their next generation watch following on from the Gear 3.

I've been trying to find a Smart Watch for quite a while that has all the necessary sensors and features I'd like.

Yes the Apple Watch / WatchOS does that, but it doesn't look like a watch. Google's WearOS watches look great, but don't have all the sensors and I didn't want to plump for a pure activity tracker like a Garmin.

So.... I was super excited to see on the Galaxy Watch website that it looked like Strava was natively supported. https://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/galaxy-watch/

I buy the watch today and low and behold I can't find the Strava app' in the Galaxy Watch App store. Was I duped. Is there no native support on Galaxy Watch?!

Personally I think Samsung are a little stupid for insisting on running Tizen instead of Google's WearOS (which natively runs Strava), but I was seriously hoping this watch had native support. Finally. On Tizen.

Is this not so? Is the app' just delayed, or the Galaxy Watch App store delayed in deploying it?

What gives?

I would support all comments to support Tizen natively to be honest; you are potentially missing out on a large group of users running Samsung watches.

  • Yeah Gear Tracker is good, the dev is accessible and happy to talk about issues and workarounds

  • My first ride with the Galaxy watch using Strava was somewhat of a failure. Everything was going well for 38 miles until it apparently stopped recording. I was checking it every 20 or 30 minutes and once I noticed, assumed I paused it by mistake, but I'm pretty sure that's not the case. To make it start recording again, I did press pause and noticed the colors change, the red ring and it says 'Paused' real clear. I hadn't seen that displayed before and after un-pausing, it continued recording. Checking Samsung Health 'workouts' picked up from the watch, nothing coincides with the strava blip that might signify a hardware issue.
Heart rate looks questionable in some places, strange jumps, and in others there were several miles where HR was not recorded. I shaved a divot where the watch sits and will try again tomorrow. If it can't do basic things reliably, I won't be keeping it.

  • Gear Tracker worked great. It recorded a 50 mile ride with no issues. This $4.99 app solved the worst problem in my life. Heart rate monitor was somewhat successful, missing a 13 min gap but otherwise seemed accurate. I can live with that and realize it's more likely the hardware than the app.

  • Leonardo, have you tried Gear Tracker?

  • Bought Gear Tracker based in some comments in this thread and now I just forgot about all headaches given by the strava app and SHealth sync issues. It's sad we had to do this but it's also incredible that a third app like Gear Tracker does things better than apps with much more capabilities and, I assume, better development team (in terms of funds and quantity of people) as Strava and SHealth. In fact, I was thinking about selling my Galaxy Watch before I read in this thread about Gear Tracker.

  • I just got 1.0.2 also. Going to try it tomorrow. Otherwise, Gear Tracker has been great, barring an issue with gps locking on initially, which was my fault once and another time I never figured it why it wouldn't get a GPS signal. The $5 is a deal as far as I'm concerned. The one developer is outpacing the Strava team at this point.

  • Stuart, go to Galaxy Apps on your phone and search Gear Tracker. Select 'Watch' tab at the top.

  • I settled with gear tracker. Just under £4 from the app store in the wearable app. I have to run it with the watch GPS, I've tested wandering about the countryside and the times are right too, no prattling about changing the run type to stop it screwing up you PR's and split times. Proper test on the park run tomorrow. Strava just a massive fail. so disappointed

  • Version 1.0.2 worked great on this morning's ride, 60 miles. No issues, it tracked HR everywhere except fast bumpy descents, too shaky to record, to be expected I suppose.

  • Well, it was doing great for a few rides and today stopped recording after 27 miles. I noticed 10 miles later and had to pause/resume. Back to using Gear Tracker until the next release I guess.

  • @Stuart Abel, did you stop any time on this activity? Strava Tizen app lacks auto pause so distance and time are greater on the watch and are fixed after upload by Strava servers.

  • When the app became available for the first time on the Galaxy watch, it was working fine for me although I kept on reeding some people having HR problems and syncing problems and then the update became available, and with the new update it wasn't syncing at all for me so I decided to delete the app and install it again and now is working fine again, I don't know if it was luck or coincidence but it worked for me maybe it can work out for some people as well

  • Marcel mine did this too. I found marking them as a race seemed to level it out a little. It still wasn't accurate but for some reason seemed to make it closer to the actual time/pace I had done. The only workaround I have found is buying the gear tracker app. Other than a couple of issues connecting to GPS it's been awesome.

  • Installed Strava on Galaxy watch today. No swimming app!  Just running, walking and riding. Disappointed.

Strava, please add swimming apps for indoor lap swims and outdoor swims (gps)

  • Here's an idea. Allow the Gear app to backup Strava data.

  • Another fail. Uninstalled this time. A half hour into a walk, suddenly the display shows 00.00 for distance and -- for heart rate, yet still Recording at top and the duration timer still going. I thought maybe it was tracking but not displaying correctly, but when stopping after 1hr 20 min, no luck. It was gone completely. I'll try the next version maybe and use Gear Tracker until then.

  • I'm done with this app! Failure to upload over and over again! Yesterday I finally got a Ride to sync. And then I see it only started recording about 800m into my ride. The two days before that I went on a 6hour ride and a 5hour ride. The app crashes every time I try to upload big rides like that. Those rides has still not synced, and the app keeps crashing when I try to sync manually. I really didn't want to, but I guess I will have to pay money now and get Gear Tracker. I'm done struggling with this app and worrying every time if a activity is going to record correctly or sync. The success rate went from about 70% to 50% to about 30% at this moment that an activity actually records correctly and gets synced. Not good enough guys!

  • I saw they brought another update out on Sunday. Now featuring auto pause function. It does seem to get a bit better with every update.. Not completely perfect, but already a lot better than two months ago. Still occasionally crashes..for example Saturday I went for a ride.. started recording, made sure it was tracking, and about 15min in I glanced at my watch and saw the app closed/crashed by itself..this seems to happen quite often. Maybe the update fixed this, will see. Haven't tried to upload a 5+ hour ride in a while, but I used to have issues syncing the longer activities. I'm hoping that is also sorted now. HR is still a mess though..this morning it just didn't track my HR at all?! Even with my watch settings set at "always measuring".

  • That same issue has happened to me twice in the past two weeks where the gps stops about halfway but the time keeps on, it's happened on a run and on a ride.  Both instances had a somewhat long break at the mileage point where it stopped ( a few to 10 minutes) and autopause was off.  I've had other long rides and runs with no breaks and it tracked the whole thing amazingly well.  1.1.1 is great otherwise!

  • Has anyone had issues with the GPS turning off during run while using the app on the watch?

Today, I lost the last 2 km of my run, because the GPS switched off (or lost signal?). Only suspicious event that happened is that the battery dropped below 20%. Could that have influenced the GPS? I don't use any power saving options.

  •

Would love to know how @Dom? Since it's no where to be seen in Galaxy Watch apps, and even Strava on Twitter said that "Samsung plans to incorporate..." (future tense).

Possibly Europe Vs. USA? (I'm in the US) but unlikely given Strava's Tweet.

  • @Tony not much more I can give you i'm afraid, except that it was 100% natively on the test version at IFA. Given it was on the home screen, they clearly wanted it to be seen and whilst I couldn't obviously take it out on a ride/run to see if it was actually tracking OK, all the options were working perfectly, so whilst it may still be in final testing phase, I suspect it's pretty close to being put out in the wild. People I know in the UK who pre-ordered are not due delivery until 8th Sept, so I suppose it's still possible they release the app at same time as the watch.

  • Just got a DM from @StravaSupport in response to Strava support on Tizen/Samsung Galaxy Watch - "We don't have a specified date right now, sorry!"

I think it's fair to say this is some ways off. @Dom. I think you were seeing a dummy app' just to sell the watch?

  • Oh, wow, I was *just* thinking I might bite the bullet and pick up the Galaxy Watch. My Moto 360 2nd gen is getting a bit long in the tooth. It's a bit of a stretch for me to consider something that isn't Wear OS, but with the right support, I'm down to try it. No Strava app is a nonstarter for me, though.

  • @Ben Dickinson. I wouldn't have been so upset either if it was a Connected Service in Samsung Health on iOS but iOS users don't have that option 😕

  • Yeah, I guess for me the issue is that I'm doing heart rate training, and I want to be able to look at my watch to see my HR at any moment. I definitely don't want to run for an hour with a phone in my hand. I mean, you're right that it's not the end of the world, of course, but it did stop me from buying their watch. At this point, I'll wait to see what Fossil announces for the new chip, actually.

  • @Ben Dickinson - Any ideas on how to get activity from SHealth onto Strava? I have tried and tried but cannot seem to get it working? The apps are linked and ive even tried google OS app to try and piece the gap but still no joy??

  • That's definitely a solve Dennis; but it's just annoying to have to use -- yet another -- app' to sync' data.

    SHealth/Galaxy Watch >>>> Endomundo/RunKeeper etc...  >>>> Strava.

There shouldn't be a need for middle-ware. At the end of the day all these devices and platforms are having a field day mining all of your personal health data (to what end I'm not sure, but at some point I see this data being used by doctors!), I'd rather limit that data to one-less app'. and deal directly with Samsung(device) and Fitness App'.

  • I also bought the new Galaxy Watch and it is just great, had Apple Watch and Garmin Fenix and will not go back, battery is just amazing. For now it synks to Strava but me as well thought an app would be there, even saved the webpage of the add showing the Strava app icon! I hope Strava and Samsung work quick or they will have a lot of complaigns and law suits for false marketing!
