Galaxy Watch and Strava

OK; so I'm initially a little disappointed. I've been following Samsung's Galaxy watch for some time, their next generation watch following on from the Gear 3.

I've been trying to find a Smart Watch for quite a while that has all the necessary sensors and features I'd like.

Yes the Apple Watch / WatchOS does that, but it doesn't look like a watch. Google's WearOS watches look great, but don't have all the sensors and I didn't want to plump for a pure activity tracker like a Garmin.

So.... I was super excited to see on the Galaxy Watch website that it looked like Strava was natively supported. https://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/galaxy-watch/

I buy the watch today and low and behold I can't find the Strava app' in the Galaxy Watch App store. Was I duped. Is there no native support on Galaxy Watch?!

Personally I think Samsung are a little stupid for insisting on running Tizen instead of Google's WearOS (which natively runs Strava), but I was seriously hoping this watch had native support. Finally. On Tizen.

Is this not so? Is the app' just delayed, or the Galaxy Watch App store delayed in deploying it?

What gives?

I would support all comments to support Tizen natively to be honest; you are potentially missing out on a large group of users running Samsung watches.

  • @Damian

    Thanks for advising...

    @Jed Pause

Ah, the Apple App Store has had the Strava app since forever.

Re native Strava app for Tizen, Damian mentioned that -but thanks for confirming.

  • @ Jared Lane , sorry I was not clear ... yes I know it's in the App store for years, I actually meant as an App in the Galaxy Wearables watch 'store' to install on your phone

@Seven Tyn , yes it's only been on a few days... I was checked each day almost :)

  • I finally have the app on my watch but despite it showing as an app on my watch it doesn't show in my list of watch apps in the wearable app? And none of my runs have uploaded to the full strava app?

Anyone else having the same issue?

  • So I've sussed out how to get strava app to show in my list of watch apps on my S9 but I still can't get any of my registered runs from my watch to show on my strava app??

  • I have the native app on my Galaxy Watch, but it is not recording my rides correctly.  The GPS trail is not always captured or just stops recording part of the way through the ride.

There is a similar issue with Endomondo as well.  I have no issues in recording rides with the native Samsung Health App on the watch.

I have a ticket in with both app providers. It seems from a Strava perspective that no-one else has reported this issue yet as the support team have questioned if I had battery saving on (which it isn't).  Endomondo have acknowledged there is bug but they don't know when the fix will be out.

Anyone else having recording problems with their Galaxy Watches?

  • Mine also stops recording after a few minutes and the counters freeze on the watch even though time is still counting. So at the moment Strava on the galaxy watch sucks for me. I started using gear tracker which works great.

  • So version 1.0.1 is out and I've been informed by support may address the GPS tracking issue. Fingers crossed!

  • Strava on Galaxy Watch worked fine for a couple of rides and then today it recorded only 40 minutes of my ride, with a 25 minute gap. When I finished riding the app was not showing on the watch but when I launched it again it showed still recording. I noticed there is a new version (1.0.1) out on Nov 23. Will give it one more shot.

  • Just went for my first mtb ride with the galaxy watch tracking with the strava app. About an hour into my ride the HR stopped recording for about a minute, recorded a top speed of 85kmh(impossible on that section) in that minute, and the track shows me riding on a completely different road for that minute.

    https://www.strava.com/activities/1990517652/analysis

Before and after that minute everything tracked perfectly. Not sure if this is a watch issue or app issue? And hopefully just a one time thing. Apart from that, the distance and elevation records pretty much 99.5% the same as my Sigma Rox 11.

  • My app downloaded to my watch but only recorded time. No HR or mileage.... I'm about to return this damn galaxy watch. Map my run stops randomly and Samsung app Is way off. Garmin looks cheap and screens break easily! Come on people I want a good watch!

  • Strava app doesn't work as intended for my galaxy watch. GPS signal loss intermittently, as a result speed and track not recorded. Heartbeat also poorly recorded. Almost unworkable for me. I have to return to built in app for running. Very dissapointed

  • Do you need to have the “watch always on” set to on to use the strava app?

  • Jeremy it's not the watch it's the apps. I had the same issue. Try Gear Tracker. Works great for me! If you do a search you will only find positive comments.

  • Lol the gear tracker has improved but mileage is still off compared to my garmin and it doesn't read my heart rate correctly.

  • I'm genuinely struggling to fault the SHealth running stock app
It syncs with Strava post run and uploads heart rate with it and shows everything.
The heart rate monitor is crap, I flat line regularly no matter how tight the watch is but that's for another thread x

  • My first ride with the Galaxy watch using Strava was somewhat of a failure. Everything was going well for 38 miles until it apparently stopped recording. I was checking it every 20 or 30 minutes and once I noticed, assumed I paused it by mistake, but I'm pretty sure that's not the case. To make it start recording again, I did press pause and noticed the colors change, the red ring and it says 'Paused' real clear. I hadn't seen that displayed before and after un-pausing, it continued recording. Checking Samsung Health 'workouts' picked up from the watch, nothing coincides with the strava blip that might signify a hardware issue.
Heart rate looks questionable in some places, strange jumps, and in others there were several miles where HR was not recorded. I shaved a divot where the watch sits and will try again tomorrow. If it can't do basic things reliably, I won't be keeping it.

  • Today after syncing it shows the ride ended after 29 miles, strangely this is exactly half way. Auto Locate was on, Do Not Disturb was on and I never touched the watch. For what it's worth, the watch reported the time of the activity as 3:19:43, which is correct, but after uploading it shows 1:36:18 for elapsed time. It's as if the whole ride is recorded, but is only sending part when syncing. Wondering if there has been 'any' testing done. I mean, this is an app made solely for this watch, right? I remember in the early days of Strava phone apps and the headaches with GPS. The excuse was always the variations of hardware. Unfortunately, the app on the watch is currently unusable and it's the primary reason I bought it. Heart rate monitor was good today, by the way at least for the part that got uploaded. Shaving the wrist divot is showing promise!
Ok, maybe I'll try Gear Tracker.

  • Gear Tracker worked great. It recorded a 50 mile ride with no issues. This $4.99 app solved the worst problem in my life. Heart rate monitor was somewhat successful, missing a 13 min gap but otherwise seemed accurate. I can live with that and realize it's more likely the hardware than the app.

  • Have been using Strava native app 1.0.1 on a daily basis to record my bike commuting since December 03, and have the same issues reported on this thread. Strava suddenly stops recording at some point, when I realise the distance is not increasing I have to pause and resume the ride, Strava then draw a line from the last coordinate and resume recording. This really sucks and make the app unusable. I will go back to S Health (with HR recording and Strava sync  issues) until Strava releases a new version.

  • Mine is been working fine sometimes the hr stops and is because the belt from watch is to loose since I noticed I've been wearing it more tight and is recording all data just fine, hr, speed, altimetry and distance. I see many people with problems but mine isn't so I guess is just a fault on the watch, maybe get it change under warranty?? Is that a possibility?? Hope it gets sort out for everyone

  • Bought Gear Tracker based in some comments in this thread and now I just forgot about all headaches given by the strava app and SHealth sync issues. It's sad we had to do this but it's also incredible that a third app like Gear Tracker does things better than apps with much more capabilities and, I assume, better development team (in terms of funds and quantity of people) as Strava and SHealth. In fact, I was thinking about selling my Galaxy Watch before I read in this thread about Gear Tracker.
