Galaxy Watch and Strava

OK; so I'm initially a little disappointed. I've been following Samsung's Galaxy watch for some time, their next generation watch following on from the Gear 3.

I've been trying to find a Smart Watch for quite a while that has all the necessary sensors and features I'd like.

Yes the Apple Watch / WatchOS does that, but it doesn't look like a watch. Google's WearOS watches look great, but don't have all the sensors and I didn't want to plump for a pure activity tracker like a Garmin.

So.... I was super excited to see on the Galaxy Watch website that it looked like Strava was natively supported. https://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/galaxy-watch/

I buy the watch today and low and behold I can't find the Strava app' in the Galaxy Watch App store. Was I duped. Is there no native support on Galaxy Watch?!

Personally I think Samsung are a little stupid for insisting on running Tizen instead of Google's WearOS (which natively runs Strava), but I was seriously hoping this watch had native support. Finally. On Tizen.

Is this not so? Is the app' just delayed, or the Galaxy Watch App store delayed in deploying it?

What gives?

I would support all comments to support Tizen natively to be honest; you are potentially missing out on a large group of users running Samsung watches.

  • So after many vocal tweets about my annoyance at no Strava support on #Tizen, either natively (app) or through Samsung Health (#SHealth) using a connected service @StravaSupport did reply.

    -----------------------

"Samsung plans to incorporate Strava for their new watch and we'll work with them to see how we can support the Strava app."

    -----------------------

I'm waiting for further comment on timings, but is this a hint that Strava could, finally, be coming to Tizen? Hopefully we don't see it all pinned on Samsung who'll just plug in a connected service. I know it's more dev time, but a Tizen app' for Strava would be fantastic. People have been crying for this since the earlier Gear models.

  • This seems odd. I was at IFA in Berlin today playing with the Galaxy Watch and native Strava app was on all the test devices and fully usable.

  • I have the native app on my Galaxy Watch, but it is not recording my rides correctly.  The GPS trail is not always captured or just stops recording part of the way through the ride.

There is a similar issue with Endomondo as well.  I have no issues in recording rides with the native Samsung Health App on the watch.

I have a ticket in with both app providers. It seems from a Strava perspective that no-one else has reported this issue yet as the support team have questioned if I had battery saving on (which it isn't).  Endomondo have acknowledged there is bug but they don't know when the fix will be out.

Anyone else having recording problems with their Galaxy Watches?

  • Ok so I was disappointed it wasn't on there but it's not the end of the world. The watch is fantastic and all I had to do was go into Samsung health and add Strava into connected apps. Works perfectly every time uploading to Strava with all the correct data and segments. If I want to see real time data I'll use my phone on the quadlock mount but for the commute and running just the watch is brilliant . So far running and riding. Will try swimming soon as well.

  • I bought the galaxy watch and after reading all through this I was expecting a nightmare. Yes the GPS data from the default running app are a bit off but when everything is loaded on Strava it does some adjusting and finally all the measurements are ok. All data are loaded including heart rate and segments. I will try map my run on the watch to see if the data is more accurate and I am using an Android app called SyncMyTracks which then uploads all the data from map my run to Strava. Yes I would prefer a local Strava app on the galaxy watch but really without much effort I still have all my runs uploaded to Strava. It's the only smart watch that actually looks so good.

  • Mine also stops recording after a few minutes and the counters freeze on the watch even though time is still counting. So at the moment Strava on the galaxy watch sucks for me. I started using gear tracker which works great.

  • Strava on Galaxy Watch worked fine for a couple of rides and then today it recorded only 40 minutes of my ride, with a 25 minute gap. When I finished riding the app was not showing on the watch but when I launched it again it showed still recording. I noticed there is a new version (1.0.1) out on Nov 23. Will give it one more shot.

  • so I'm waiting until friday (UK release day) for the Galaxy watch specifically as its advertising it with Strava and Speedo ON etc.

very dissapointed to hear that it's planned to have it and feel duped that they are advertising it with it when they know it's not ready yet.

Might cancel and buy a garmin instead

  • Update. I returned the Galaxy Watch. With no word on Strava (or Apple Heath Kit) support either natively or via. connected services/sync' the watch was definitely not as advertised, with "glowing" app' support. In fact the only useful app was Spotify.

Switched out for a Garmin Fenix 5

The Garmin is a sweet unit but I miss the richness of the organic LED display. Garmin is daylight sensitive and to use in low light you need to turn on the backlight which really washes the screen out.

That said. Great Strava and Apple Health support via. Garmin Connect. Great looking unit.

O! Samsung. I really wish you had Strava support. I've spent a week with the Apple Watch, Galaxy Watch and Garmin Fenix 5 and on balance the Galaxy Watch is the best looking/functional but without Strava support or Apple Health Kit it's pretty much useless for me. I don't want to be forced to use Samsung Health (SHealth). It wouldn't be so bad if it sync'd with non-Samsung/Tizen Activity Trackers, but no such luck.

Really disappointing start to the Galaxy Watch.

  • Strava support messaged me to say they are working on the app currently and based on Dom's message above I assume it's very much in its final testing phase?

  • In the UK here and just unboxed my Samsung Watch and realised the lack of a Strava app.

This is so disappointing and will likely result in me returning the device and sticking to Apple Watch instead.

Samsung have mislead the public and YOU Strava have endorsed their misleading people in allowing them the use of your name and logo etc.

  • Wow, this is pretty blatant false advertising on Samsung's part. Everyone should report them to the agency responsible for regulating advertising where they live, especially if they bought the watch on the basis the watch had Strava support.

In the US: Go to https://www.ftc.gov/complaint

    In the UK: https://www.asa.org.uk/make-a-complaint.html

  • Annoyingly, they removed even connected services a few months back. Think we need to take to Twitter and social media regarding this false advertising by Samsung!

  • This is what I was looking for in deciding to buy the Galaxy watch. I really wish they would just switch to WearOS, and be the leaders in that space. I think they have the best hardware and could really move the WearOS market forward, but currently it seems like they're just cutting off their nose to spite their face by sticking with Tizen and it's dismal app support.

  • So pissed about this, have ordered already, & thought I'd be able to bloody ditch my iPhone6 (which I use for my run training & rowing only), as there'd be a decent native app! Native Spotify app for the watch, but no bloody top-notch training app, gah! Grrr.

Never thought I'd say it, but bloody ditch Tizen Samsung! If you can't get everyone else to use your ecosystem/OS/platform & get things firing on all cylinders, then what's the point! Use Google's, sure they'e not doing much better at this point, but it'll more readily/quickly fire-up once you enter the ring!

  • Hello @Jeff Sodeman, not sure I follow what you are asking here but I try to answer as I do have a Samsung phone S8 and I can confirm that from the watch the activities get loaded automatically to Strava, all works. Off course as well known no Tizen app yet...

  • Hi I just received my Galaxy watch here in Ireland. I also saw the advertising with the Strava logo prominent on the promotional material. But there is no app.

However, others commenting to this post have indicated that you can push the data from the Samsung Health app to Strava. But I have a question: Is this only if you are running the app on an Android phone?  I have an iPhone and the is no opportunity to connect to Strava in settings as mentioned earlier in the comments.

My fear is that I have a watch that I cannot use to record runs on Strava...at all.

Any comments or help out there, please? :)

  • Hi Folks,

My Polar M430 is soon going to die (battery depleats, display issues, loose contact issues) and i am also in desperate need for a new one (running, swimming, roadbiking, mountain biking, hiking with map support and indoor fitness). The new Polar Vantage Series is not really shining with features and my needs, so they drop out. My first choice was the super expensive fenix 5(+) series, but now - after reading several reviews - i see the Galaxy Watch 46 mm as my favourite - if it supports strava and external sensors.

    Are there any NEWS?

    Thank you in advance!

    Mario

  • Cynically, I am guessng the year's free <apMyRun membership that comes with the Galaxy Watch is the reason the strava app has been sidelined (and probably in conflict with the team that got Strava connected to S-Health)

  • I didn't even know about the year's free MapMyRun. Talk about a useless feature. May as well offer a free membership to MySpace. It would be nice if they had a native app. Even the native app on WearOS is semi-useless though. The majority of the time, it won't use the GPS on my watch only (Ticwatch E, good choice otherwise), if I leave my phone at home, so it doesn't record at all. Then it also won't use an external sensor for heart rate, and so all the wrist-based sensors suck if you're actually running or being active I end up having to delete the heart rate data because having bad data (like stretches of 240bpm while I'm jogging at a slow pace) is worse than having no data. I end up just using my Edge 520 with the watchband adapter, even though it's huge and looks sort of super geeky. Or I just don't bother recording HR on my runs.

  • I've been considering a galaxy watch and this thread is putting me off I won't lie. I have no issue uploading through Shealth but does it share all the data? Do you get segments + map etc or just the time and distance?
Does it still show your PR's etc?

  • @Hils - depends what phone you’re using. If you’re using iOS(phone) there is no connectivity to SHealth. You have to use a 3rd party app’ to sync to Strava. I was so frustrated when I bought the GW3 based on the prominence of the Strava logo in all their marketing material only to find that there was no Strava app for the GW3 AND! no connectivity in SHealth on iOS. Ended up getting a Garmin in the end.

  • @Damian

    Thanks for advising...

    @Jed Pause

Ah, the Apple App Store has had the Strava app since forever.

Re native Strava app for Tizen, Damian mentioned that -but thanks for confirming.

  • Just went for my first mtb ride with the galaxy watch tracking with the strava app. About an hour into my ride the HR stopped recording for about a minute, recorded a top speed of 85kmh(impossible on that section) in that minute, and the track shows me riding on a completely different road for that minute.

    https://www.strava.com/activities/1990517652/analysis

Before and after that minute everything tracked perfectly. Not sure if this is a watch issue or app issue? And hopefully just a one time thing. Apart from that, the distance and elevation records pretty much 99.5% the same as my Sigma Rox 11.

  • Lol the gear tracker has improved but mileage is still off compared to my garmin and it doesn't read my heart rate correctly.

  • I'm genuinely struggling to fault the SHealth running stock app
It syncs with Strava post run and uploads heart rate with it and shows everything.
The heart rate monitor is crap, I flat line regularly no matter how tight the watch is but that's for another thread x
