Update to Android 9.0 has stopped Strava working properly (Nokia 7+)

So my phone updated to the latest version of Android at the weekend and since then there seems to be a huge problem. The ride is recorded but I get the message 'Strava has recovered from a problem' (or something like that). The time is recorded but not the route. After doing some research it appears the GPS is not connecting or is being turned off with the lock screen.

I've turned off all the battery and data saving options and also the com.evenwell.powersaving.g3.overlay.base.s600ww as recommended in another thread. I downloaded something called Wakelock V3, but no idea what to do with it. Supposedly has power override features, but I can't figure out which option to use.

So other than having something like Google maps running constantly, anyone else having this problem? Any fellow 7+ owners out there?

  • I think I'm getting something similar but on a S7 on Android 8.  Only get datapoints on the activity when the screen isn't locked.

  • This seemed to do the trick for me on Android 9, not I did not seem to need to lock the app only the battery issue and high accuracy location

    Solution: short version

I will just mention the steps that need to be performed and then I will elaborate on each step with a screenshot. Moto g7 Play

    • Go to Settings > Location > Mode. Select the mode High accuracy
    • Then go to Settings > Apps > Application List. Find the Strava app and click on it.
    • Click on Battery. Make sure the Background activity is selected.
    • Then click on the Battery optimization. Scroll down to find Strava app in that list. Click on it and select Don't optimize.
    • Now go out of settings. Start Strava app to track an activity.
    • Click the button on the right side of the home button to bring up recent apps. Find Strava in that list but don't click on it. You should see a small lock icon on the top right corner of Strava app. Make sure that lock icon is of a closed lock. If it shows an open lock, tap on it and it will be closed. This ensures that the OS won't kill the app when you try to close all recent apps
