Galaxy Watch app synchronization

I tried using the Strava app for Galaxy Watch (Tizen) a couple of times now. Twice with a bicycle ride, once with a run.

The first ride was about 12 km and tracked just fine. It synched with my Strava profile perfectly. The second ride that I tracked did not sync. And today I did a 8 km run and that too did not sync. So the three activities all show in the history page of the app, I can manually try to sync them and it says it was succesful, but still they do not show up in my Strava profile.

During the run I noticed I did get 1 km updates of the stats but the pace was only right the first km, the other updates showed rubbish numbers for pace (slower and slower while I was actually accelerating)

So currently I am disappointed, dumping the app and reverting to Samsung Health.

We're investigating an issue that's preventing activities from syncing to Strava from Samsung Gear and Galaxy watches. At this time, we do not know the cause. If you're experiencing this issue, please try updating your app to the latest version. If that doesn't help, try re-syncing any missing activities:

    • View the History folder on your watch.
    • Select Tap to Sync on the missing activities.
    • To confirm the activity has synced to Strava, you should see a "Sync Successful" message at top of the screen and Tap to Sync will no longer appear.

If you're still having trouble after giving that a try, please contact us by selecting Submit a Request on this page. We will be posting updates as they become available and you can Follow this known issue to receive email notifications: https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/360035299171

  • I have the same issue : synchronization seems variable : sometimes I have to wait several hours (lot of "error sync"), after what it works

  • Here same problem with my Samsung galaxy watch

Strava has two big problems on the samsung galaxy watch

    1. not syncs activities with the profile

    2. very hight battery consumption (also in stanby, only opened app and not in use)

I'm agree with you Eric; dumping the app and reverting to Samsung Health.

I hope Strava developers are working on these issues, could be apprecete an answer as "take in charge, work in progress"

    :)

  • I fully agree with your point 2 Luca -> WTF with the battery consumption, including during no activities ?

  • I have the same issue with my Galaxy watch. In the beginning the GPS would cut out about 15 minutes into the activity. Time would continue to calculate but when I would finish the workout it would show a straight line from where the tracking stopped to my final location. I reinstalled the app on both phone and watch and now activities will not upload to my Strava account. Like Eric I try and manually sync on the watch, says its successful, but nothing shows up on my Strava feed.

  • Had a shiny new Samsung Galaxy watch for Christmas. Linked my account using the four digit code etc. Been for my first run today, tracked ok on the watch/strava app and seems accurate, but having the same trouble as above - it's not syncing to my profile grrrrrrrr.

Spent ages considering which gps watch to buy and the fact Strava have this app was the main reason went for the Galaxy watch. If it doesn't sink to your profile it's a useless app!

Have messaged strava support for help. If it's not sorted the watch is going back and I'll revert to Runkeeper again!

  • Yup exact same here, three issues:

    1) Pacing was way off during run

    2) First run sync was fine followed by another two that no matter what I try are locked into the watch and won't sync.

    3) Ridiculous battery drain compared.

Been using S Health since and no problems at all. Only reason I keep opening Strava app is to try and get it to sync!

  • Same here - can’t get the App to sync

  • Finding exactly the same sync issues as above. I click the tap to sync under history on the galaxy watch but nothing happens.

I've resorted to using Strava on my phone again which is a shame because one of the reasons I got the watch was to track my runs in Strava.

Benefit of the doubt - app is only v1.0.1 so hopefully there will be some updates forthcoming after the holiday period...

  • I wish I had read this thread earlier. I just completed a run using the strava app for the first time. It didn't sync automatically and shows "sync failed" if I try manually.

Back to S Health it is then, even though annoyingly for some reason my last run on that didn't sync, despite all previous runs syncing fine, hence why I tried the strava app.

  • I have the same issue. I did the manually syncing but the registers don't appear in my Strava Profile. I will use Health for a while.

I feel disappointment of Galaxy Watch and Strava. Please solved it!

  • I gave up with Strava and tried Endomondo. Experienced exactly the same issue. Tracked the ride on the watch, and everything was cool, their app is so much nicer, but, again, no sync after conclusion. I googled a little and found a hint. You have to install de app first on the watch and run it. Only then, it asks you about the Phone app instalation. Doing like this, with endomondo, it works now fine. Syncs everytime now, did it severa times.

Could anyone try this procedure with Strava?

  • Hey folks,

We've worked with the app developer to identify the activity syncing error is with the Samsung app, not with Strava. A patch is being worked on to resolve the issue. Appreciate your patience!

  • Dear Jess
Would you be able to say by when this patch is available?
Currently, the strava app is unusable within galaxy watch.

Do you know by the way if there are plans to support an external hr belt in future?

  • As above, same issues.

Another great thing would be if you can customise which activities you want to track, instead of just walk, run, cycle.
I'm hoping to use it for snowboarding and leave the phone at the hotel.

  • Hey Jess,

As noted, Version 1.01 didn't sync properly, but it recorded my HR data fine.

Since the patch, the sync works fantastic (great work!) however my last couple of runs have not captured HR data. Not sure if this is due to the Strava watch app or potentially how tight the watch is on my wrist.

I will tighten the watch as much as possible on my next activity and report back.

Also, a bit of feedback on the watch app, if you accidentally rotate the bezel during an activity, it pauses the activity, without actually selecting and pressing the pause button. This happened to me yesterday. Run a further 1.2 km that wasn't tracked, missed out on the glorious January 10k badge!

    Cheers

  • Thanks Jess for the update. The synchronization bug seems to be resolved, cheers for that! The previously unsynchronized rides and runs are synchronized now including a new run.

A few notes on this update:

    • After updating, launching the app the first time brought me to the history page right away (last page I left opened?) and then it crashed.
    • Opening the updated app the second time it asked me for the four digit pairing code. When I did that everything was fine.
    • When running, and the run is longer than 2 km, it still gives me 1 km interval stats that show the wrong value for pace. It looks like minutes/2km, minutes/3km, ... sequence.
    • The end of the run (a few 100 meters) do not appear to be logged, it is missing while samsung does seem to have registered this final section.
    • The samsung health app still has tons more features (like setting different targets, spoken interval stats, ...) so to me there is not so much advantage in using the strava app over the samsung health app.

Actually what brought me to trying the Strava smartwatch app is a synchronization bug when using Samsung Health for runs or rides that have a pause in them (in terms of time and distance). This results in outrageous speeds in the Strava record.

  • Hello Jess, thanks for the answers above. Good to know that someone is looking for us ;)

I experience the same problem reported by Kaigogi M:

    1. I open Strava app in my watch

    2. Click "History"

    3. Click "Tap to sync"

    4. Receive message "Syncing, please wait..."

    5. Strava app closes

    6. Activity is not synced

I'm using Strava app version 1.0.2 in my Samsung Gear Sport. The same issue has not happened to activities recorded before and also after the one I'm trying to sync.

Thanks a lot for your support and let me know if you need any additional information.

    Regards,

    Bruno
