Strava doesn’t work on Apple Watch 4

Really disappointed to learn that since upgrading to Apple Watch 4, the so called best running app in the market is NOT compatible with the new Apple Watch. What’s even more disappointing is that Strava have been aware of this since September 2018 when it was first mentioned by other users in different threads and 5 months later still no update or fix. Really poor from Strava! I’d much more recommend Nike Running Club as it actually works of Apple Watch, more accurate and gives much better workout details!

    Hi Folks,

Sorry for the trouble. It's possible there was an error during installation of the Strava Watch app or the correct permissions weren’t granted.

    Please try the following steps:

    1. Log out of the Strava mobile app on your iPhone.
    2. Use the Watch app located on your iPhone to force an uninstall of the Strava Watch app. Note that it may take some time for the app to be fully uninstalled from the Watch face.
    3. Confirm the app has been uninstalled from the Watch.
    4. Uninstall the Strava app from your iPhone.
    5. Force close all apps on the iPhone.
    6. Restart the Watch and iPhone.
    7. Download and install the Strava app on the iPhone.
    8. Confirm you are logged into the Strava app.
    9. Confirm the Strava app has been installed on the Apple Watch.
    10. Unlock the display on the iPhone and load the Strava Apple Watch app.
    11. Watch for and approve prompts on both devices.

Please let me know if that helps.

  • tried the process above twice and it doesn't work, however, if you run strava from the watch app it picks up heart rate.  but if you run strava from the phone the watch does not act as a HRM.

  • I’m also struggling with the Strava app on Apple Watch Series 4.  The app is on the watch, but when I try to start the app on the watch, the screen briefly goes black, then the app apparently exits and it returns to the app selection screen on the watch.

I tried the procedure to reinstall the apps on phone and watch, but I get the same result.

I’m using an iPhone SE, if that matters.

Is there anything that can be done to make the Strava app work on Apple Watch Series 4?

  • I got an Apple Watch 4 in March and installed strava. It worked great for about a month, so I figured the above issues had been resolved. Then yesterday I tried to use it, and it did not work. The strava app still appeared on the watch, but when I went to open it, it crashed. I followed the steps above, and the same result is happening. Strava - please resolve!!!

  • I am dealing with the same issue. I bought the watch Apple Watch 4 specifically to use with Strava. I have done all the steps of uninstalling and reloading a few times and nothing seems to work.

  • The Apple Watch 4 does work. But can’t act as a HRM with the iPhone app which I’ve got over so I start the app on the phone and the watch but discard the app record once I’ve saved the watch record.

  • I solved this issue. I checked and unchecked all setting, which was connect with heart rate monitor.

After this, heart rate monitor started working.

    Good luck

  • Try disabling Workout Power Saving on the Apply watch. From the Watch app, navigate to General > Workout Power Saving Mode > toggle OFF.
