What is Cadence?

I would like to know what that is. It is apparently measured in spm but what does spm mean? Is it how fast your legs move or something to do with your stride length?

  • It is exactly spm (strides per minute). For running, it is a count of how many times you foot hits the ground in a minute. It doesn't necessarily have any direct relation to stride length except that the shorter your stride, the higher your cadence will have to be to maintain the same speed. In my experience, cadence is more of a biking thing, measuring how many pedal strokes you make in a minute. There are certain ranges where you want to maintain for different types of riding, probably similar with running.
