Swim shows up on Strava as a run

I got my GF a new Garmin 6S pro and her pool and open water swims get recorded as runs in Strava. I have the 6 pro and I have no problems, We are both using same phones, and all software and versions of apps are updated.

  • In the app (on from the internet if you have a login account) you have to set a default workout type. When you start a workout, it will automatically be in that mode unless you change it...by clicking on the bike/shoe/water/etc. at the bottom of the app screen when you initiate the workout. But if you're uploading a workout from another device, the Garmin for example, you have to select the workout type when you upload it...or else it will record in Strava as whatever you have your default workout type set to. But...if a workout gets recorded in Strava as the wrong type...you can still log into your account, and edit the  workout to the correct workout type.

  • Salve sono interessato alla nuova funzione di Strava che registra “nuotata “
ma chiedo se qualcuno può rispondermi
Come fa a registrare nuotata ?
Ci vuole un altro dispositivo ?
Bisogna portarsi in Acqua il telefono ?

- Dan

  • When doing a swim activity, my watch syncs it to the barmin app correctly as a swim activity. However, under strava this shows up as a running activity.

from the above, it sounds like i need to set beforehand for each activity what kind of activity it is???

    why is this wrongly done?

    regards,

    frank

  • Frank -- I can't say why your sync'd device records as a run. Well, maybe. I don't use/sync any devices so I'm not completely sure how device and the app interact. But again...I think there's a way to set/change your default activity in the app/website account. I do have a Garmin Forerunner 25 that I use to record my open water swims. It does have bluetooth/phone sync capabilities, but I don't take my phone with my on swims. Consequently, when I upload the swim via my Strava account, it initially records as a run. So I have to change the activity to a swim. Nevertheless, since the Forerunner 25 is a running only watch, and can't be set to swim, it will show that I covered the 3-miles distance VERY slowly...in about 1 hour 15-minutes, and only burned about 100 calories. In other words...it assumes I was walking I guess. But if whatever watch you're using can be set to a swim function...I guess you have to make sure that it is set to that.

  • Hello Dan,

    Thanks for your respons.

I have a FR 945 and I run & swim. So, I guess setting a default for one activity means that it syncs wrongly data for the other activity.

The Garmin app (connect) registers it correctly...

Will try to play with it a bit more.

  • On the iPhone, when you select "Record" and the "Start" button appears...just above the Start button is a small icon that represents either the default activity, or the last activity that was selected/recorded. For example: If the last activity recorded was a swim...the little waves will show up there. If the last activity was a bike ride...the bicycle will show up there. If you touch that icon, it will present you with a list of activities. From that list, select the activity that you're getting ready to do. Once the activity is set THEN touch the Start button. -- Dan

  • I have the same issue as Frank Wetzels. I also have a Garmin 945xt. The issue is something new. Started 4-6 weeks ago.
I have not found a solution for it yet.
For some reason Garmin Connect and Strava are not communicating well. My workouts are loaded correctly from Garmin Connect to Training Peaks.

  • Same issue as Oswaldo. The past month or so Strava registers all swims as runs, even though theyre swims in Garmin Connect. It was fine before, no issues, so this is a new bug after one of the updates.
