Route builder has become terrible at following decent roads

Route builder used to be very good, but it has become absolutely terrible in the past year or so, to the point where it's barely usable any more. The problem is that it keeps trying to take every possible shortcuts. Unpaved roads, trails, imaginary paths... You name it, if it can cut though a turn, it'll take it. It really doesn't make any difference if you "Use Popularity" or not.

I'm guessing not everyone will have this problem depending on their location, but leaving in the french Alps with many twisty roads and lots of trails, it is really a problem for me. Every time I'm planning a route I have to insert dozens of waypoints to keep the route on the actual road.

At a minimum, there should be a "Road bike" option that keeps the route to paved roads.

Has anyone else noticed this? What changed that made route builder so much worse at following good roads than it used to be?

  • I had this problem since the beginning (well that was last year so I've really never experienced a good Strava route builder). I am just using komoot. Way better than strava for buidling routes

  • Yes I agree. This seems to have started since Strava changed map source. Route planning now follows tracks, footpaths, etc. There doesn't seem to be any option to "stick to road" - which makes the tool pretty much unusable for road bikes. It's possibly more suited to mountain / off-road cycling, but for me, it's now pretty useless.

Surely an option to "stick to roads" would be possible to add?

  • Nicolas C. I'm new with Route builder, I created a track but want to insert or move a waypoint in the middle of my track, is that possible and if yes can you tell me how to do this?

    Thanx, gr. Hank

  • I paid the subscription so I can plan routes. I feel totally ripped off. Route builder is complete shite. I’m a road cyclist and don’t want to use trails. Never used to be like that when it was free. Want my money back.

  • Agreed, even with the preference set to paved roads it's sending me up all sorts of barely walkable paths as of the past few months. Seriously considering cancelling my subscription because of this as the route builder was one of the best features. In the Alps you now have to click to place a waypoint on every hairpin otherwise it just seems you straight up the cliff.

  • I absolutely agree. The layout has become terrible. It's no longer possible to properly distinguish between secondary roads and main roads. Popularity sends you through dangerous road sections, or dirt tracks.

All to make it look 'pretty'... announced as the biggest innovation implemented in the last 5 years... :D

  • in addition, you can't save a route and later continue building it, since additional edits can't be saved afterwards
