Segment Leaderboards

This is the post for all feedback and feature requests related to Segment Leaderboards.

How to format your new idea and/or feedback:

Feedback that is actionable and constructive is most effective. When sharing, please consider the following when framing your thoughts:

  • If you have a new idea, it's helpful for us to understand why that feature is important for you and the value it will bring. For example: I want __. It will allow me to do ___. The reason that is important is because of ___. An example of when I needed that was ___.
  • Specific examples and details that illustrate the problem/confusion you are experiencing. For example: When I do ___, then ___ happens and that is not ok because ___.
  • Screenshots that help visually illustrate the problem. For example: Here is a picture illustrating my point ___ from above. See how ___ is doing ___?
  • An explanation of why this is important. For example: This is important to me because ___.
  • If you propose a solution, an explanation of how that solution would help you and why that is important. For example: I think a ___ would be great because then I could see ___. This is important to me because I have to ___.

If someone has already suggested the same idea as you, you can help us quantify the demand for the feature or improvement by upvoting the original comment. To upvote, click the up arrow on the right-hand side of the comment.

  • It's not a bad idea (and auto-flagging is something that users have been requesting for some time), but it sounds like it might be over-zealous, especially if it cannot be contested. irreversible auto-flagging should not be flagging "unlikely" efforts, but be more conservative and flag "impossible" efforts (ie, faster than world record pace, 1 minute mile runs, etc)

  • The auto-exclusion of "infeasible" efforts could be a good improvement, although it clearly needs to take account of gradient (both positive and negative) in determining maximum feasible speeds.  Maybe the algorithm could also be tweaked based on feedback from "trusted" users ?

Hopefully once the bugs are worked out it can be applied retrospectively to old Activities and not simply used for new ones.

I recently created a new Segment - after allowing Strava time to populate the leaderboard with old Activities, I had a look to see if I was close to the KOM.  It was a little de-motivating to see the KOM had an average speed of 113 mph !  Hopefully the new algorithm will remedy such data issues.

Keep up the good work !

  • Worst forum i have ever been.

I can not believe the way it works.  If you want to comment a post in the first page, you have to write 11 pages later...

Do you think with this forum some can follow a topic?

  • Cesar Corral 🇪🇸 I fully agree, we have a great contender at the title of worst forum ever.

    Note :

    1. Less than one year old and already a real mess
    2. No more then 21 subscribers to sub-topics
    3. Ironically, a lot of the point raised in forum receive no clear answer...while in fact new feature fixing these points have been added over the year in Strava !

So the problem is not only the forum, but also the way relation to its users is managed

And by the way...https://support.strava.com/hc/fr/community/posts/360073566191-Feedback-about-our-Forum may be the correct place to report this !

  • Jason Lamoreaux  I don't think it matters where we post.  I looked to see when the Strava folks who set-up the forums last posted and its been quite a while.  I think we users are all just talking to each other...  I think you may be the most active of all.👍

  • I would like to see more age categories. Now there is no more categories past age 75.

Those of us over 80 or 90 ate competing with 75 year old's and it does make a huge difference

  • In the mobile app (I'm on iOS), when looking at someone else's activity, if I tap into a segment, I would like to see how my ranking compares to theirs. Eg, they are 1000/10000, and I am 800/10000.

Currently, in the segment detail page, it shows my friends time (for the current ride, and their PR), and my own PR below that. However, when you scroll down to the leaderboard, the ranking is my own.

If i then tap into a leaderboard like All-Time, only my own ranking is show (below the top10). It would be great if, at the very least, this leaderboard would show my friend's ranking as well. So it would have the Top 10, my ranking, and my friend's ranking. This is useful to see how my friends and I stack up compared to everyone else.

    Thanks

  • I do see Stava starts making it automatically exclude those "impossible efforts" but, in such a country with lots of motorcycles, and still limit the quota for us to flag activities manually...

    just tired...🤡

  • Sometimes riders get unreal data from their ride, some of which result in KOMs. The rider acknowleges the unreal KOM. However, there is no way for the rider to easily flag the unreal KOM so that Strava can fix the issue. I think most people would want to remove their unreal KOMs but there is no easy way to do it. As a result, people just leave it the way it is.

Maybe Strava can include a button for the KOM holder to flag the unreal data which will automatically remove the entry from the leaderboard.

  • Ian Barton - I totally understand what you are saying and you are probably right that many of those who create bad segments won't go back to fix them, but is there any harm in having a way to at least ask them?  It's one of those "can't hurt to try" situations.  I think in some cases, the poorly made segments are done by people newer to making them.  They may not realize you can zoom in on the map to get a better view of the start/finish locations to adjust the points or are just in a hurry to get one made for a specific event.  I know we can always hide segments, but it is getting to the point where some of our trails have more hidden segments than unhidden ones.

  • I previously mentioned a problem with editing the titles of segments I have created.  The Strava support team have now fixed this problem 😀

  • Leaderboards for segments are always polluted with activites with poor GPS (ie. using strava app on phones is a big culprit) or activities when users are in a vehicle. I recall strava had implemented auto filtering of impossible achievements in the leaderboard? obviously not very effective.

  • Is there any particular reason why people can trail run the hiking segment boards but you can't say roller blade the running segments or use an e-bike on the bike sections. I'm asking for a friend.

Sure, they are similar sports, but hiking and running are vastly different for instance. When I run, I wear shorts, running shoes and no pack. When I hike I often have a 20lb pack, light hikers or even heavy boots, and probably some clothes (vs running clothes on). Basically different sports.

Some of the times on the CRs are not possible without at least running part of the segment and if you look at peoples GPS logs, they clearly ran. 12 min mile on a 2000 vertical gain in 3 miles is probably possible but highly unlikely, as an example. I'd be willing to bet that person couldn't race walk a 12 minute mile on fllat ground. Strava needs to do a better job with filtering out running gaming the system.

  • I get the concerns with ebikes on pedal bike leader boards.  That is flat out cheating.

But I don't get the running vs. hiking vs. walking concern.  If one wants to be competitive for bi-ped locomotion then focus on the running leaderboards.

As primarily a hiker, occasional walker and rare runner I always use the Strava running category so all my bi-ped activities are tracked as one for total mileage and also (this is the main reason) so Strava will record the activity on my personal heatmap (which walking and hiking do not).  As a hiker I have zero reason to use any category other than running.

  • Official segments for race organizers, local experts, etc.

In some areas (typically famous cycling climbs), there are too many segments and a lot of them are not properly created (end after cross section, wrong start, etc.). There is the possibility to hide them and some are hidden by default but it is not always the best one that is shown. It would be great to create an "official" segment category (and maybe "official KOM title") for some famous climbs. Those segments would be highlighted.

  • I also would like Nordic Ski split into "Nordic Ski Skate" and "Nordic Ski Classic". Everyone's time with skate skiing is much faster than classic skiing. You can't compare the times. Often friends are putting in "skate" or "classic" in their description to help separate the two.

  • It would be great to have a leaderboard that records data not just each month but for the entire year to see who are the athletes that do the most distance, elevation gain, and so on on the entire year. Thank you.

  • Totally agree Peter Cajthami........Some E Bikers in my 65to 70 age group smashing some segments but their overall average speed is no more than 12 mph 🤣🤣

  • Segment leaderboard suggestions

    1. Would it be possible to have an all time top 10 leaderboard that showed the top 10 fastest performances (not the top 10 fastest athletes). I think this would be an interesting way to see consistent performance.
    2. An all time local legend top 10 would also be another possible enhancement.

    I agree - real simple.

There will be some plonkers that will still intentionally choose the Acoustic category even when they're on an E-Bike just so they feel like they beat some people at something in their lives.....but being prompted before saving the ride would certainly help on the off-chance they got a conscience one day. :)

  • How to move from page 1 to say page 20 on the leaderboard without having to go one page at a time?

  • yep, i pointed that some time ago too.

ppl using poor receivers - like phones, quite often have these advantage up to ~10 secs (coz they don't have more points, ot because recorded track was offseted by 50 meters in some direction).

That's why i stopped paying for Strava... they ask for too much, offering buggy service ....

  • Awesome Jojo - that's a great start!

If people ignore from there, then they're clearly cheaters (or plain idiots), but hopefully the prompt will at least get them thinking about it.

  • If a track has changed slightly, how do we manage the leaderboard? Should the leaderboard be restarted? I.e. if there is a mountain biking trail that has been around for 5 years and the track is quite different in 2021 compared to 2016 then how can we compare lap times accurately? If the track has significantly changed i.e. more corners, jumps, burms etc added then can we trigger a reset for the leaderboard? If I was to create a new segment, Strava would just retrospectively match all previous rides to this new segment, even if it doesnt perfectly match the exact path. Strava: "Same start point and end point? Must be the same trail."

We can't remove, retire, or globally deactivate these segments even if the trails have changed because those past efforts are still valid as that was a real route at that point in time.

What I would suggest is to hide any segments that are no longer current and then use the tips in this article to see if you can create a new segment to account for the trail changes. You'll want to check out the sections on parallel trails and switchbacks as those tips are probably most relevant to this scenario: https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/21074038-Optimizing-Segment-Creation-how-to-create-good-segments

As you'll see in the article above, it's very possible your new efforts may still get matched to old segments—this is a limitation of our matching system. If you hide those old segments and do your best to create new/high quality segments with the tips above, it will be less noticeable.

Here's information on how to hide a segment: https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/216918177

  • Yes! Francois' idea to be able to "abdicate" a KOM would be a great addition. I have a KOM on a Nordic ski segment as a result of my GPS drifting and making a straight-line short-cut on the segment. I researched how to delete a segment but to no avail. I'm reluctant to delete the entire activity as I made a leaderboard on another segment the same session. But I would happily abdicate my unearned KOM for the segment in question.

  • And similar to Dan's request, above, it would be great to be able to see the age of another user and also look at other Age Group Leaderboards than my own.

  • Zwift offers the rubber band feature, which helps friends to stay together during a meetup even though they are performing differently. Example: Person A needs 30 min for a certain segment and person B needs 1h for the same. In a meetup with rubber band activated, both need 45 min for the segment. Person B would never make it to 45 min from their own performance. So the segment effort is unrealistic and should not appear within the leader board. This way the whole Segment thing is absurd for virtual segments.
I don't say there should be no virtual segments as segments are fun in virtual worlds as well, but as it currently is, it's not half the fun, as it's not reliable.
