Different Heart Rate zones for Running and Cycling

Although I saw several posts on this topic, I really want to give this issue the attention it deserves.

As a paying Premium member, I want to have my data to have value. For that, I have to be able to differentiate my running and cycling HR performances. Now, usually, the max (or treshold) HR value of running is well above cycling, mainly because with running you use more muscles that require hence more oxygen. For example, my running HR Treshold is 160, whereas my cycling HR Treshold is 150. Having set my HR values on running, my cycling HR data are useless.

It wouldn't be too much trouble correcting this I hope, I know Trainingpeaks does give me the opportunity to differentiate HR zones between sports, so I can use Trainingpeaks to analyze my workouts. WIth Strava Premium I cannot.

So, I would give a shout out to the people of Strava, to add this feature, so that my Premium account can be more valuable. Thank you.

  • I read the active article above from @Steve Annells also and would agree the solution is to train both systems, there is something to be said about someone training to levels in one discipline to another.

If one activity because of lesser fitness or a weakness in a given area pulls more work from the cardio system, I should be able to track that especially in my activities.  I've been doing anaerobic spin activity this year not truly understanding the balance needed for these kinds of activities against say running anaerobically.  What it did to me was showed lower HR / intensity minutes in Strava where in fact it should have been MUCH higher.  My spin would generate for example 80 points of intensity over an hour.  While running anaerobically even in HIIT intervals would be much closer to 160 in the same timeframe.

My argument, I've done the same work, but the HR zones set for cycling for me don't align - I need to pull mine back a lot so I don't double up my anaerobic workouts in a week for one.  For two, I'm short changing my EZ days with incomplete data (that I'm now much more attuned to).

  • +1 - I love Strava - since 4 years I pay for it just because I like they way they are doing - I don't use premium features, but I love to support great ideas - so please correct this missing feature !

  • I'm waiting for this feature aswell! Actually, it's really basic!

  • I expected Strava to be ahead of Garmin on this front! Come on Strava, if Statistix can do it then so can you.

  • I also would like to be able to enter two different max heart rates for cycling/running as they are certainly different (186 vs 194)

  • I'll admit I don't know a lot about heart rate training, so I won't have my feelings hurt here if someone can set me straight on this, but it seems to me that the issue is the heart rate zones, not max heart rate. Wouldn't max heart rate be a static number, regardless of what exercise/activity type you are doing? If my max heart rate is 185, I thought that meant that is the upper limit of how fast my heart can beat - if I can only get it to 175 on a bike it probably just means I typically won't reach my max HR on a bike. I get adjusting the different zones, but I don't understand having more than 1 max heart rate.

Maybe this is just semantics and I'm getting trapped by an unimportant detail, but as a person who is trying to learn what this stuff means I am a little tripped up by the notuon of multiple max heart rates.

  • I also need different zones for different sports (including swimming).

  • any update, my MAX HR on running is over 200 but cycling is only 175, appreciate if it could be implemented.

  • +1 relative effort and TSS is pretty useless without this for triathletes

  • +1 relative effort indeed useless for people who combine running and cycling!

I see this thread was started over 2 years ago. When will we finally see this being rolled out?!

  • +1 for me, too

Using Max HR isn't all that helpful. And if Garmin, whose software is woeful can manage to have different heart rate zones for different activities, surely Strava can manage it?

  • I started this thread two years ago. And no response or action from Strava whatsoever. Quite disappointing, and because of this omission, making combined TSS scores and other related metrics unuseful, I recently I terminated my premium Strava-account because of this. I now use solely Trainingpeaks, they got the data right.

  • Same here! I ended my premium/summit subscription as well. Now spending my money on TrainingPeaks...! And I strongly advice anyone who does multi sports to do the same!!

  • My subscription ended as well, I'm going to test TP and /or stay with Polar. Thanks for the tip.

  • I've switched to Training Peaks. Hot tip, find a promo code. Works best if you live in Monaco too as they don't pay tax ;)

I have no use for Strava as a training aid any more. It is so basic. For me I use it as a social platform.

  • Strava

People have moaned that you do not support different Heart rate zones for running and cycling for years and all you do is give us trash updates with minimal new features.

All the fitness and freshness metrics you use are based on heart rate zones so please can you enable this feature as a matter of urgency as your features all incorrect and useless for multi discipline members.

This is the last year I will be paying for a premium subscription if this is not resolved ASAP!!!

  • Yup this is crazy, been requested for so long! Without this very simple feature in place, anyone training multiple sports data is irrelevant... My cycling & running heart rate thresholds are completely different.

  • I find it hard to accept that this has not been addressed yet. The Garmin website allows us to input a max heart rate for running,  biking, and swimming. The different zones show up on my Garmin device as I ride, but when it uploads to Strava the zones are based on my max (running) HR. I want to see my actual time in zones, especially on rides when I am doing a lot of climbing. Please fix this!

  • Crazy that this isnt a feature! Ive wildly different zones so bank to TP for me. No point paying here

  • Glad I'm not the only one that wants this. But disappointing when reading through years of comments and nothing has happened.

Like most above, will cancel my subscription when it ends in a couple of months and just stick with TP. At least they get it!
