Strava won't connect to internet connection or over 4g, so I can't even login

I have a Nexus 5, and have been using Strava for over 3 years successfully. For the last 2 Android releases (Currently on 6.01), when I try to login to Strava, it tells me Login Error, Internet Connection Failed, in a red box. I've tried logging in with my Strava username and password, and also by Google and Facebook. I've also tried it whilst connected to wireless router, and over 4G. The error message is the same. I've also uninstalled it and re-installed Strava to no avail.

    Hey folks,

We are upgrading Strava's network security systems to make sure your data continues to be as safe as possible. This change requires that all athletes have a more recent version of Strava to continue using Strava on Android devices. If you are seeing errors such as "Data sync failed," "Network unavailable," or something similar, please make sure you have the following installed:

    • Android KitKat 4.4 or later.
    • Strava app version 51.0.0 or later. The latest update can be downloaded from the Google Play store.

Please check out the following article regarding the update:

  • I figured out my problem. Just in case it helps anyone else...

A battery saving Tasker profile was kicking in too quickly and not allowing the most current version of Strava to call home before it would fire up.

All working now with profile turned off. I will add a delay soon.

The profile turns off mobile data and wifi after Strava starts up to save the battery.

  • I am receiving the same error and I don't know how to check for a Tasker. I have a Samsung SM-G20v Android version 7. Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

  • Having the same problem and don't understand the fix.

Is tasker profile on the phone or in Strava?

    Where do you find it?

  • Hey folks,
A Tasker is a smart functionality that any smartphone has these days. It may include activities like "auto night mode", "shake to start the torch" etc.

So when you disable these taskers it would allow you to connect to the strava server again.

My issue got fixed by turning off the "chop chop" to turn on torch.

    Hope this helps. :)

  • I'm getting the same message  "internet connection failed" when trying to sync an activity and again when trying to log in. I've been using Strava almost daily for two years and never had this problem before now.   Does Strava Support respond anywhere?

  • Have you checked your system for any battery saving apps/processes that turn data/wifi off?

  • I tried everything mentioned and still couldn't find anything that would allow me to get back on Strava. Same message about "no internet connection ". Today I picked up a new phone (which I had already planned to do) and the problem was solved. I asked the guy at Verizon what could have made the difference and he said that the antenna might have degraded (!). Still not sure why if it was my phone, others were having the exact same problem but thought I'd put this down in case it might help somebody.

  • On 10th of January my battery discharged during activity. After that I got "Data sync failed" or "Unable to sync". I managed to export GPX, but since that time I am getting "Internet connection failed". Countless restarts, reinstalls, but the result is the same. Now I cannot ever log in the app.

I don't use any "battery saving Tasker profile" on my phone, and every other app can connect internet.

    Sony Xperia V, Android 4.3

    Please help.

  • Same problem here. I can export my activity - I email them to myself and import them using desktop Strava.
Every other app on my phone can connect to the Internet.
My screen turn off after 5 minutes. Other than that I din't see any battery saving setting. (BLU Studio G, Android 4.4.2).

  • I was logged in and could record activities. An old Strava KB article suggested logging out and in again. I can't log in (Internet Connection Failed), so now I can't record.  My version is 27.0.1.

  • I had problems to log  with an Xperia U and Strava version 4.3.0, since 10/01/2019 it says the password is wrong (thes access with this mail and password works fine on PC).  Does Strava had made mods on password security that don't works with older versions ?

  • I found this on Strava's web site.

I upgraded to the latest version of Strava and also had to update Google Play Services.
I can log on again and I assume I can sync data.

  • Me too. Been a pain in the butt for the last week or so. Messages are 'data sync failure' or 'internet connection failed'.I've cleared cache, cleared data, uninstalled and reinstalled Strava. No change. Will soon be tempted to move to something better.

  • So... the older reports here (back as far as 2016) must have been something else, but the flurry of new ones since 2018-11-30 are due to Strava's security upgrade. You can't log on or access the current server with an older version of Strava. Luckily I was able to upgrade on my phone this time. I got locked out in the past because Strava had to be upgraded and my old phone wouldn't support the new version.

The new Strava version also triggered a dependence: I had to update Google Play Services.

    All is good again.

  • Brian East
Strava must have made a security upgrade on the server side, so now you need the newest client (Strava app).
I upgraded and also upgraded the Google Play Services and mine works again.
See Strava's post here from Jess

  • So, because my phone has Android 4.3 I can't install the latest version of Strava and the older version does not work on my phone any more.

Nice one Strava, thanks a bunch!

I am not upgrading my phone any time soon, so goodbye Strava!
