  • How about being able to add a caption to the uploaded pictures?  Thanks.

  • Hi - can we please have the ability to add comments/text to a picture.  Thanks, I'm glad to not have to use the Instagram app/interface any longer, as I was only using it for Strava.

  • Without sounding like a broken record, obviously I'd like a way to upload photos via the website, but we'll start with the mobile app and see what happens from there.

However once you've uploaded a photo via the app, I do notice one thing that I think needs looking at. When you go to the Strava website, if you click on a photo when in the activity page, or from the dashboard, a link appears under it saying "Go To Activity", which is kind of pointless, as you're either already there, or one click away from it. But if you are looking at the photos on someone else's profile page (or even your own), this link does NOT appear under the photo, which seems strange because that's the page on which you DO need it, as you're unlikely to know what activity it came from and perhaps want to find out.

  • Thanks for the recent questions! We do still have a few glitches to smooth out with the new photos feature:

@Antonio - yes, this is a known issue that we're working to resolve. If you delete an activity with a photo, sometimes the photo sticks around on your profile page. If you'd like to have this photo removed, we can do that for you easily on our admin end. Just reach out to us directly in a support ticket: https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/61608110

@mtb mikey and @Richard - we are exploring photo caption capabilities. Stay tuned.

@Steven - there was a bug with the "Go to Activity" link under the photo when viewed from the website. While we fix the bug, we thought to remove the link to avoid the error page folks were seeing. The link will return when the issue is fixed.

  • Thanks for adding the feature. Suggestions for improvements:

    * Make it possible to upload from desktop. I hate to always have to transfer the photos to the tiny little cell phone...

    * Don't compress the photos so much. They look really ugly!

    * Use the EXIF geotag info (if available) or the EXIF timestamp (combined with the GPS data from whatever device) to put the photo at the right place on the map.

    cheers

  • I agree with Anders: Strava is mauling the technical quality of photos, which is only likely to be noticeable on a standard PC screen. I suspect this a mixture of JPEG compression and heavy-handed resizing methods (i.e. altering pixel dimensions).

It ought to be possible to apply JPEG compression without appreciably softening the photo--Facebook does this very aggressively and still yields sharper photos than Strava currently does (tonality tends to suffer more). This issue negates some of the advantage of switching to a camera for Strava pics.

  • Just to illustrate the point about ugly JPEG compression, here's one of my pictures from a trip around here a couple of days ago, as "original" image (edited photo from a camera) compared with Strava's and Facebook's compression methods, as well as the ugly smartphone image from Instagram:

    http://folk.ntnu.no/anderfo/pics/2015-04-06-Storlidalen-P%C3%A5ske/StravaCompression.htm

I'd say Strava's image is compressed way too much. Also the Facebook image is too compressed in my opinion, but it's anyway far better...

And it illustrates also why the Instagram app is useless for taking images ;)

  • Love the new mobile photo upload! Hope to utilize it sometime. My phone is usually tucked into my pack...with the music rollin' for some sweet cruising time. I have a separate camera I use, and would likely upload more pics to Strava if there was desktop browsers support...so a +1 on that idea.

    Great mobile option...awesome...thanks, Elle!

  • I record my ride on an Edge (for accuracy) and carry a phone for pictures.  It seems that I can NOT add photos to an activity displayed on my phone if the activity was created by a GPS.  Why not a common edit button?

  • @Douglas, I too record my activities on an edge. I have not had a problem with uploading photos.

Here is my work flow I like to use.
I take my photos on a Nikon Coolpix P340 (fits nicely in the jersey pocket). I edit my raw files in lightroom when I get home. Sync my photos to my Samsung tablet through drop box. Sync my Garmin Edge on the pc. Then edit the strava activty and upload the photos from the tablet.

Again wishing I could upload the photos straight from the pc.
Completed one of the adventure challenges yesterday and gotbsome fantastic photos. Unfortunately I cannot tag my #stravaphotos.

  • Are there plans to add photos on Strava.com outside of the phone app?

  • I want to thank you for adding the ability to add photos directly to Strava without having to go through Instagram.  I would however, like to add my support to the idea of being able to add captions to the photos.  Photos are great, but being able to add a comment or explanation, really would enhance the feature.  Thanks again!

  • It would be great to be able to view uploaded photos on heat-map, so that one can view all rides and photos on a single heat-map. Also, when sharing rides to Facebook it would be great if photos were posted as well.

  • I just wanted to add myself to the list of individuals hoping to see photo addition via the website (via simple upload).  I don't have a smartphone, but do ride with GoPros recording everything...so my video/pictures are recorded from that.  I would love to be able to upload some photos directly.  Elle Anderson, & the rest of Strava...thanks for all the work you do.

  • Yup. Adding photos to an activity AFTER the fact to an activity via the website would be great. I don't really want to fumble about with my phone too much while I'm dripping after a run :}

  • I always carry a small compact camera with me to record activities and want to add images after the activity via the website not via the phone. Seems to be a popular request. PLEASEEEEE!

  • Great feature already without the obvious improvements - but I really wish to keep the pressure on so join the choir regarding these:

    1) Website support for photos,
    2) Caption / comment / title for photos

    Pleeeze???

  • Trying hard, but still ... I've seen users asking for uploading existing photos (taken with their phone, with the phone app, ...) to Strava activities. Instead , users are pushed to use Instagram (past) and now use the Strava App to upload photos. I don't believe Strava is listening to their 'customers' very well. A lot of users (not ll of course) are NOT using the Strava app to lo any activity. Have you ever tried 3 hours in the pouring rain with your iPhone? So, here we are. After waiting for months to upload pictures, I still can't . It should not be rocket science, really. All other social media sites allow you to post any picture you have somewhere to your profile. But Strava ...

Aah well. If anyone knows about a good alternative, let me know

  • Oh, by the way. I just noticed that all comments left here needs to be approved by the Strava censure committee!

Don't do this, Strava, this is really not taking your 'customers' seriously. I'm sure you can do better than that.

  • Thanks for all the continued feedback here.

A small announcement, we released some improvements yesterday to the photo viewing experience on the website. When you click to view a photo on an activity from the Strava website, you should see some minor chances that we hope will enhance the experience.

Photo captions, hashtags, and a web uploader are still very much on the table and being considered for future developments. We appreciate all the feedback left here as it does help us decide our course going forward!

  • @Elle; looks like the web view update broke something with the resolutions of the pictues ?

    Look at this activity: https://www.strava.com/activities/287773816

Almost all pictures are stretched ?

  • We do have a small bug that is in progress with Internet Explorer. When viewing photos on the website with this browser, the photos will be stretched. Should be fixed soon!

I also noticed the EXIF geotag is being used now for uploaded pictures, thanks for the improvement :)

  • Is there anyway to add a photo via the website? I don't use the mobile app, as I don't like running with a phone stopped to my arm/waist. However when friends and family take pics I would like to be able to upload them to that activity.

  • +1 I also can't see the feature anymore. I used to but in the last 2 weeks the features seems to have disappeared from my Strava. I use the Android app and the App version is 4.4.2

  • @Nic, Presently strava does not have a desktop upload system. You do not need to take your phone with you on the run. But to upload photos at present you will have to transfer the photos to your phone and then use the app to upload the photos. This is currently the only option.

We all know its very backwards and hope strava fixes this soon.
