Strava's new white color theme - Tell us what you think

What's new in Version 5.0.0 on Strava for iOS:

Strava has a new color theme that's easier to read, especially in bright sunlight. We're excited for you to give it a try and leave your feedback for us.

  • You all call it the white theme, but I would say its an orange theme and you based it on the iphone and rode the wave of iphone popularity. I look at...why should I go premium and it shows a black theme (awesome and premium) in all the returns...and I think now I have premium have I got the wrong setup because it's orange. It looks rubbish on my Android phone and I don't want this premium look no more. Bring back at least an option for themes.

  • Put it this way. If the black theme is not brought back in as an option by November 2016 I will not be subscribing.

  • A month after and I still have no regrets about cancelling my premium subscription.

  • Hey guys, do you really think Strava is in danger if they loose 55 premiums (I've never been) subscribers ?
I think they just don't mind if 0.1% (no clue about the numbers, just supposition) of their users complain about the white background.

  • Relevant question Stéphane.

I don't think Strava is in danger if they loose 55 premiums, but I do think it is terrible PR not to address the concerns of 55 (and counting) unhappy Strava users.

  • @Stéphane Louvet, I believe that is the incorrect way of looking at it.  A company like Strava has a support system - this forum is one of them - they also have Support Tickets, App reviews on Google Play and iTunes and the Disqus blog they regularly publish to.

Strava also has data for each of those platforms.  They also have data for how many times an app is launched, and the version of the app that is launched.  They can measure how often they receive negative feedback compared to positive feedback regarding a specific topic, come up with a baseline for how often satisfied users submit feedback versus how often unsatisfied users submit feedback, determine the number of overall users that X amount of support/forum posts equate to (not so different from a Nielsen ratings system representing overall population extrapolated from a small population of users) and from a subjective reading of all that data applied across all topics for which there is feedback, decide if one specific topic deserves attention.

To me it's simple: I hope Strava decides to appeal to more users by providing options for both, rather than unilaterally and quite stubbornly sticking with one over another, as that appeals to the broadest base of users and potential users.

The more people that voice their concern over the change, the more it elevates that topic in the forum versus other topics, which highlights it as an item worthy of addressing.  If "55 complaints" is twice the number of complaints they normally receive, maybe they'll consider an adjustment.  If "55 complaints" is only one-fourth the number they normally receive, then deprioritizing those complaints is probably a good decision.

For my money, downgrading to v4.22 and disabling auto-renew, registering my concern here and on Disqus, has been enough.  Through attrition I've found that I also launch the app less often and I even advised those who hadn't upgraded to v5 not to if they preferred the dark theme, but also advised them to upgrade if they desired light.

The marketplace will sort itself out and determine if Strava was right to prioritize turning the lights on versus other items of greater practicality.  Who knows, maybe the influx of Premium users has been so great since v5 that losing 1, 3, 5% of dissatisfied Premium users is worth it for them versus the costs of software development for an option switch to choose either theme.

  • I think that assuming only 55 users are unhappy with the change to the white theme is rather missing the point.

Many people who may like a particular change will not bother to say so.

Equally a large proportion of people who do not like any specific change will not bother to complain.  They'll either just suck it up (but still not like it) or the will simply stop using the app in preference to a.n.other app.

Assuming that the fallout is going to be only 55 users is simply wrong.  And this does not take into account the general negativity that will stick with the company and product way beyond this specific issue.

I suspect like many, I would have much rather had an option to change colour schemes in the last release (5.3.0) above "club Discussion Notifications" which is what we had instead.

I for one am lucky in that I could downgrade and have disabled auto-updates but really this should not have been necessary with a little foresight on behalf of the developers / product managers.

  • Any way you look at it, this is lousy customer service. This is just like the changes to default activity names.

Strava: "We want to know what you think!"

Almost every comment: "We don't like it"

    Strava: "We aren't changing it"

Why bother asking us if our feedback doesn't matter? All the assumptions on either side are pointless - the proof here is this thread. Strava asked for our feedback, it's almost entirely negative, and they don't seem to care.

I really think Strava is just angling to be bought out by Garmin or some other large company.

  • Well, I've already voiced my displeasure on the white theme and wanting the option to switch back to the black theme previously, and I've had more time to adjust to it, to see if it would "grow" on me.

I can honestly say that it hasn't changed for me and I still dislike it and would love the option of going back to the original theme.

    Thanks.

  • Strava needs to cater to all types of riders, therefore the app should never have been locked to just pure white.

I personally prefer the black theme all day, everyday. I am sad to see it gone.

I hope in future revisions the option to turn it black will return.

  • I have no idea where and how your research were done, but clearly it is wrong! I absolutely HATE the new white background and it hurts my eyes. As approaching to winter, the day time is getting shorter, it means most of my rides are in dark and it is unpleasant to look at it. Even in the day time, I still prefer the dark than white. This has nothing to do with "get use to it", this is simply a bad decision made.

I am a software developer and GUI is very important element of our application as well. I know it is not easy to please everyone, but in this case, it is clear that you have displeased everyone. Unlike desktop application, the dark or light background color scheme is sometimes hard to decide and different people has different opinions, like IDE. But for the navigation app, it is not hard to figure out that you need allow users to toggle base on the time of the day. We sometimes are constrained by the budget to develop a GUI supports both. But if you have spent time and money to create different color themes, why it is so difficult to allow users to choose? Most of hard works are already done!

Please please LISTEN to the people's feedback here. Tell your manager who made this decision to admit and listen to it actual users. "Turning the lights on" doesn't means "keep your lights on all the time, even when you sleep". Thx

  • Has this got something to do with Apple wanting the App to look like a proper part of their suite and STrava are having to play ball?... Because the other rationales given by Strava customer support add up to zero.???

  • Bring back the dark quickly please. I get bombarded with screen light too much already! The dark was perfect!

    Update: Thanks Flapjack!

In case it wasn't clear from Flapjack's comment, if you are running iOS, you have recently updated your phone to the latest strava app (and hate it) and have not synched your phone with your computer since then, you can likely get back the older version that is sitting on your computer. Delete strava from your phone (press and hold the stava icon, press 'x'). then sync your phone with your computer.

    Back in black!

  • Thanks to "Elle Anderson" for reminding me i can downgrade. luckily iTunes was still holding onto the 'old' version , so i just had to delete the app on phone, then plug into iTunes and it added the old one straight back for me, i'm back to Dark Mode! yay! its so much nicer that the white, and I can actually spot it in the app switcher out on a ride much more quickly flicking about from maps, messages and strava.

I spend a Loooooot more time looking at this app on the sofa in the evening than I do while im out, i prefer to actually just get on and ride while i'm out as the iPhone battery isn't exactly packing spare power to be wasting on looking at stuff out on the road - maybe the dark mode saves a few joules of power too? maybe not if its just a back light behind the LCD display i guess.

Dark mode is back, im happy, just got to remember not to upgrade again! this is where the modern worlds love of constant upgrades falls over, so many people don't want a constant stream of upgrades breaking apps, forcing hardware upgrades and generally causing issues, we just want the app to work, and keep working..

  • Rox Teddy - it looks that way to me. My feeling is that Strava is looking to get bought out by someone (Apple, Garmin, who knows?). Look at the recent changes in the past year or two. Ditching Google Map support, the ridiculous activity name changes (replace everything with "Afternoon Ride" instead of location info), abandoning of the shop, this terrible color scheme change, the fact that we STILL can't buy Strava premium gift subscriptions (the only thing Strava sells now) for our friends... It goes on and on, and all we get in return is Elle telling us how much Strava values our opinions, even when all of the feedback is negative.

I love the social aspect of this service and I still pay for Premium but I can totally understand why people are jumping ship to other services. Hopefully whoever ends up buying Strava out starts listening.

  • I have to say that I do not care for the light color. I had no issues with the dark background and was easier to read. The white background is harsh and stark and I have no desire to study my performance and analyze it. While you may think it's easier to read it's not. Please give us an option for light or dark background. Thank you.

  • I find it quite disappointing that after offering a choice you have removed it. I'm not sure what this accomplished and I'm a much less satisfied user because of this arbitrary change. Or rather step back, as a choice existed in an earlier version and now doesn't. I even pay for a premium membership of an app that takes away features that I like...thanks a lot

  • I have to wonder what their staff meetings are like...

"In the last year we've taken some really great steps! We replaced Google Maps with an inferior free alternative without street view. We worked hard to remove location information from activity titles. We listened to all our paying customers who said 'We don't want weather data, please remove it before importing our Garmin Connect activities". We got rid of that silly Kudos Count that everyone liked. We made sure that all of our club types continue to exclude everyone but triathletes. And to top it off, we re-tooled our application to give it the most eyeball-searing-at-night color scheme possible, just in time for daylight savings. I'm sure we all stand proud and look forward to another year of giving our few remaining customers absolutely nothing that they ask for, right up until we convince Apple to buy us out."

  • Way late to this thread, but having used the white for months now, I still prefer the black.  Whatever good intentions you had, they were lost on this user.  Would love the option to toggle back.

    thanks

  • Just upgraded - terrible change. Please revert or at last give the option to use dark theme. This should be a priority. There was *nothing* wrong with the old app, and now it's worse.

  • Don't you do it Strava. Whenever you get around to updating the Apple Watch for phone independence, Please don't make the display a bright white background too.

I don't care at all for bright background. Battery waste when screen left on, obnoxious on night rides, and definitely annoying sitting at home before bed with an all white screen. Just silly not to at least offer the dark as an option. It was one of my favorite things about the app before.

  • AMOLED handset owners might be able to squeeze an extra hour or two out of their handsets, so long as they can find black background versions of their most popular apps.

  • I appreciate the effort of the staff trying to improve the program visibility, but to me this is a major step back for Strava. I chose this app mainly because of it's dark theme, which was the main difference in the look from other apps of the same kind. At least you could have left the option to choose between light and dark theme, not force all users to suddenly invert the look of the app. I'm a digital designer so I know what I'm talking about.

Sorry Strava you disappointed me this time! I really hope you'll be working very soon on bringing back the dark theme, or at least give the users the option to choose between the two.

i was so alarmed when i updated my local weather app which was constantly white background also. now the back ground that changes with the time of day! how about that!!

white during the day and dark at night. it changes automatically.  would Strava like to have their contact details so they could mimic the same?
