Problem with duplicated activities

The Apple Watch and Strava are one way to record data, Garmin is another. Problem is Garmin can tap into all ANT devices, while Strava only some. So, Garmin gets HR, cadence, speed, GPS, and power meter data. Garmin doesn’t communicate with my Apple Watch, but it does have Garmin Connect. Garmin automatically dumps data into Strava to create an activity. If I record one activity simultaneously with both Strava app and Garmin, I end up with two activities on Strava, which messes up my cumulative Strava record. Can Strava be fixed to cognize by time one activity and automatically give user a choice to merge data?

  • Same problem but it was forced by Strava removing the functionality of using an HRM with the app. I bought a Polar OH1 and downloaded the polar app thinking it's going to magically combine the data but no! it just makes a duplicate activity and so you can't see your heart rate within the activity you recorded on Strava. There's no point really in syncing the Polar data to the Strava app if you can't view the heart rate data as part of the recorded strava activity. Huge disappointment!

Strava, please give us a decent work around if you are going to remove a very important feature! I purchased a new piece of hardware because of this! I'm a Summit user. Now the app lost half of the functionality. No HR, No power, no cadence! What the heck! Please enable a way to merge the Polar data (or any HR data, power, cadence etc.) with the Strava data on the mobile app.

  • Just got a Polar Vantage within the last week and so and just joining this conversation: are there any updates that have come about since? I wouldn't mind ceasing using Strava for recording rides and exclusively relying on the watch to import after the fact, but my wife wouldn't like me no longer sending her beacon links when leaving for my rides, and I really like seeing the map of my course after finishing (not sure that'd be produced if only recording my rides via the watch?).

  • This is incredibly frustrating. First Strava stops supporting heart rate monitors. Now we all end up with duplicate rides. Please Strava, fix this. Allow us to merge rides or whatever so that we can take the heart rate monitor data from Polar Flow (or whatever) and the rest from Strava in one ride. Or bring the HR monitoring directly from Strava back.

  • Same here, completely different tracks recorded in GPX viewer on Android and Strava is calling them duplicates when I try to upload the second one from the desktop site. They are very clearly different tracks (from the same day).

  • How hard can it be for Strava to recognise overlapping ride times/distances from another device (mine never match exactly) and give you the option of marking it as duplicate, and to merge or select data from each device into a single record?  If that's too hard because of mismatches in segment data, at the very least Strava could ignore the distance from the other device so it doesn't double up your cumulative total!

  • Download your FIT file (garmin, etc...)

    Go to https://www.fitfiletools.com/

Upload your fit file and change the date (change the hour for example).

So, upload your fit file on strava.com

  • Thanks Rodrigo, but that still gives me two sets of data for the same ride and so I still end up with twice the distance in my cumulative total. I want to merge two sets of data for the same ride into one record within my Strava history, not have two separate sets of data.

  • I have a Fenix 6 and want to add data from my edge 520plus as I want to compare segment results and HR data etc and some stuff that the edge doesn't collect. It will not let me upload my data for both devices. And doing what Rodrigo said would mean I would have the same ride on my Strava history which I don't want to have.

  • Ian Jay: If you want to compare output from different devices, check out DC Rainmaker's analyzer tool: https://www.dcrainmaker.com/analyzer It does a really nice job of comparing various logging data metrics side-by-side between devices. I've used it a number of times to compare my Polar and non-Polar tracks, especially when I'm curious about optical vs. strap HR sensitivity and response times.

It requires you pay for an account (or a day pass), but $30/year to support an indie web developer's project is something I'm happy to pay.

Rainmaker seems optimistic about Strava's behind-the-scenes changes in development focus, so perhaps this problem of Strava track overlap will eventually get a solution. I tend to be more pessimistic, but I'd love to be proven wrong on this one!

  • Same problem here, Wahoo Element Bolt and Apple Watch (with strava app / Riding activity). both activities are joined -not merged- so total numbers are overcalculated-duplicated. Strava should basically provide a merge function which overlaps each other.

  • I’m not sure if this is helpful to anyone, but after getting accustomed to my Polar Vantage, I’ve been recording my rides with by my Vantage and Strava separately but deleting the activity recorded on Strava after finishing my ride (rather than uploading it), then syncing my Polar Vanatage and uploading that data to Strava. Doing this does not duplicate my mileage, yet still uploads all data (heart rate, speed, segments, etc) with minor discrepancies (I find my average speed usually varies by 0.1 MPH or so and distance 0.2-0.4 miles). This allows me to continue to use the Beacon feature I like and make the most of the Polar device I’m inclined to think is slightly more accurate than Strava. I notate the discrepancies between the Vantage data and Strava’s interpretation of it in the notes for the ride after uploaded — I just go in and manually edit the ride. I was doing this anyway before getting my Polar by notating my Bontrager bike computer data in the notes section because that too is regularly discrepant to Strava.

    Happy riding/running/whatever you do

  • This is frustrating I am having the same problem all of y'all are having.

I normally used my Garmix fenix watch to track my activities but I started noticing that the GPS was wildly inaccurate. Almost by a .25 mile.

This may be because I use a Garmin fenix 3 which is an old watch, but that still.

Strava really should add a feature to merge 2 activities into one

  • I'm having the same problem, I have the huawei watch GT and there appears to be no plan from either strava or huawei to amend the lack of integration,

It forced me to buy a Wahoo Tickr X which will upload directly if I dont use Strava to track at the same time, but I like redundancy and the metrics that strava records that Wahoo does not share with Strava, simple solution would be to enable merge file capability. I tried emailing .FIT file, then upload via the strava website but was met with the duplicate record error message.

Please Strava fix this, it is bad enough that huawei cant integrate with your App.

  • Same problem here. my applewatch doesnt want to send my heart rate data to strava and my Wahoo cadence and speed data causes duplicate activity in strava.
    Why is this so difficult?

  • Same problem with wahoo. If I well understood there is this issue since 2 years and no solution so far. That's amazing.... I think I will change to another app there is a plethora similar to Strava. Why should I continue to be frustrating?!?!

  • Salve! Buona Giornata a Tutti Voi! Ho questo problema! Durante il caricamento del file del mio percorso in Gpx il sistema mi dice che c'è un duplicato! Come mai risulta sempre questa situazione? Grazie per la Risposta e Serena Domenica!

  • Makes absolutely no sense that the same athlete can do two simultaneous events at the same time (excuse the redundancy, but want it to be clear).  How is Strava not "smart" enough to automatically detect and alert you of this?  If they didn't want to be in the business of automatically deleting user activities for fear that there is some reason the athlete wanted them both there (I dunno why), they could at least alert you when this happens and make it very quick and easy to delete.

  • Hey folks, I guess it's officially time to give up on Strava. Katie's response confirms that Strava just doesn't get it.

I've been sticking around because Beacon is a nice safety feature while out on rides and runs, but apparently Strava has forgotten that it exists and that it creates this very duplicate activity situation that they have just acknowledged that they have no plans to fix. They really don't want you to be using their own app at all. Use a third-party app is their non-answer.

So, anyone have any suggestions for a replacement for Beacon? MapMyFitness has something kind of similar, but it requires all parties to be on their system. Beacon was nice because you could share it with non-Strava-users. I haven't found anything quite the same, sadly.

And with Strava focusing their development efforts on everything EXCEPT bringing back HR data to the app, what is the point of the Strava app anymore?

  • based on this official, please dont send any emails you are caring "athletes" and bringing features they asked for. simply, you are not caring.

"At this time, Strava does not offer a way to "merge activities" when recording with two completely separate devices and we don't have any plans to support that in the near future."

    and why?

obviously this is a requirement needed by your user which you ignore. either you do not care about what your customers are requesting or simply pushing them to pay your partners extra money.

funny thing is that, I receive an email from Strava saying there are 50+ updates since new year. what is the point of developing 50 updates which I don't use, but ignoring only one update I needed?

  • Been Summit member since 2015 - I originally joined specifically to get HR measurements from my Wahoo TICKR. I didn’t cancel my membership immediately to give Strava a chance to resolve it. I have tried to use the Wahoo fitness app to record with my phone, but don’t find it as good as the Strava mobile app (and the Wahoo app loses all data if the battery dies). I have tried with the watch app, but find the HR much less good than the chest strap. And it is renewal time. Or would have been. Never experienced this supposed problem with connecting to the Bluetooth HRM.

Ah well, reason for Summit has gone.

  • At first, I thought since I use Lezyne I might be able to resolve the duplicates issue.  However, when attempting to following the link in Katie's official Strava response, it appears that I must now be a Premium Member to sync my Lezyne to the Strava app in order to avoid getting dupes.  Seems like the folks that have helped propel the success of Strava should be grandfathered into having this sync feature for free.

  • May 14, 2020 17:47 Katie -Strava "At this time, Strava does not offer a way to "merge activities" when recording with two completely separate devices and we don't have any plans to support that in the near future."

I'm getting really tired of reading this exact response on just about every feature request or feedback post I read. I'm really hoping by neutering the free accounts strava gets the money to actually improve things in the app, or someone else makes a platform that does. Competition is always good.

  • Same here, I don't like a chest strap for heart rate and prefer my apple watch for it. Also because I use the watch for general health besides the rides. Next to that, I use my Sigma Rox 12 GPS for speed, cadence, etc. So I end up with duplicates.

If Strava can't even fix that in the free version which is basic for me, then I definitely won't subscribe for a paid membership.

  • So, what's the point of paying for a Strava subscription, if you cannot use Strava AND your heart monitoring device at the same time? Why should I not just stop using Strava, and find something else?

  • Crispin,

So does this mean that we don't start the Strava app before we ride.  We only start Garmin Connect and then Garmin posts the ride data automatically into Strava after the ride?

This would mean that our segment achievements wouldn't be recorded correct?

    Thanks
