Route guidance from Apple Watch app

I’m amazed I can’t find an existing feature request, because I’m amazed that this doesn’t exist already.
I want to be able to load a Strava Route on my Apple Watch in the Strava app, and then have the app give me directions whilst i’m running/riding. Having to stop and get my phone out to check the map/route is ridiculous when it could be so easily avoided.
The Apple Maps app manages to do this when I ise it to get from A>B.
Am i missing something?
As it stands I can’t see what the Strava Apple Watch app has as an improvement over the built in Apple activity software (which i sync to Strava anyway)

I'm pretty new to Strava + Apple Watch and am shocked this isn't already integrated! Also - the fact that you have to start the workout on your watch in order for your watch to record heart rate data is annoying (especially for cycling). I feel like the Strava developers are spending too much time geeking out on what they can do with heart rate data/adding a bunch of metrics rather than implementing basic functionality. I saw that this was requested from a post in 2017 too. (!!!!!!)

  • I’ll add another voice, this would be a really useful addition, especially now Strava have created the route planner. Pretty please 🙏🏻

  • I am new to the Apple Watch and Strava community as well, and was sure I was doing something wrong. Yesterday while on a training run I had to use the Apple Watch in order to get notifications but also had to use the Apple phone in order to see the route. While training for a marathon and following other peoples routes this is a nuisance. Kind of crazy also noticed that both the watch and the phone while on my body at the same time had over 3/4 of a mile Delta in a half marathon distance

  • Did my 1st Strava run today, I too was annoyed that I started the run on my phone only to find the apple watch app was not syncing with the phone and no route guidance unless I pull my phone out and look at the map while I run.  Come on Strava, make this the best iOS and apple watch app for runners!

  • This would be a feature I'm willing to pay for - I always run with my Apple Watch 4 but never take my phone.

  • +1000 I value this over extreme data visuals and comparison. Lots of opportunities, let's make it happen.

  • For those who would love this, you might want to upvote the same request from 2017 over here: https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/115000337290-Follow-a-Route-on-Apple-Watch

But alas... Strava does what they want and they ignore user requests in most cases, even if they are simple requests like adding Private Training Notes... ignored since 2014:

  • Come on Strava, you can do this! As a beginner, the only thing holding me back when it comes to go for a REAL MTB ride across the mountain is not having user generated routes to follow in a comfortable way, like from our wrists :), no distractions. I'm pretty sure there might be an app that allows us to load the routes we create to our Apple Watch, but it would be sweet if developers integrate it as a native feature of the watch app.

  • Hope they’re working on this since they’re currently adding new features the community demanded for a while now.

Meanwhile I recommend the WorkOutDoors app. I’ve been using it for a couple of weeks and it’s been great. Now I can have offline navigation and routes on my watch.

  • Pleasssseeee! I bought an Apple Watch so I *didn’t* have to pull my phone out on runs.

  • I agree with the sentiments expressed here. I run with an Apple Watch and leave the phone at home so I don’t have to have it bouncing around in my pocket. The Watch has cell service and GPS - it is meant to work untethered - there is simply no reason not to integrate turn-by-turn directions. Without it, the Strava app on the Watch has no utility beyond what the Apple workout app already provides.

  • It would be an excellent feature but I have no idea how it could work and suit everyone.  For example I would like this feature for my trail races because there have been times when I've not been totally sure which direction I should be going in...but I don't know how a watch with a small interface would help.

Personally, I would like to record the run on my watch and use the mobile to track the route without the mobile trying to record anything.  Last time I tried to run the route I couldn't work it out and just used the phone which is not as accurate.  I'm going to run another route today with the watch as well...I'm hoping that it won't cause confusion and especially when I discard the run on my mobile it won't discard the run on my watch as well.

  • Huge +1 on this. Especially now that Strava has released the suggested routes feature--it would be incredible to be able to go to an unfamiliar place, pull up a Strava suggested route, and go for a run with turn by turn directions, all without taking out my phone. Seems that all the pieces are in place to make this a no-brainer, can't really understand why they haven't implemented it yet...

  • Suggested routes feature has made this a must have now...loving some of the routes i've found but not so much getting lost in the middle of nowhere...a simple zoomed in map on your watch with your location and route at any given time, activated with a swipe on the watch would do it and then evolve to include realtime audio directions. You guys have said you're increasing features and i'd say this should now be high up on the list!

  • 🙏🏼 Also from NL, please implement this so I can leave my phone at home and avoid clumsy switching to my iPhone to check a route.

  • I gave up waiting and went with WorkOutDoors. Works very well for routes on the watch and great developer support.

Not a promotion post BTW, just highlighting an alternative which works.

  • It looks like this place is abandoned. No feedback from them for such a useful feature that people are willing to pay to get it.
