A few Apple Watch & Health Questions - disable AW HR? Health priority?

Hi,

I have a couple of questions regarding using Strava on the Apple Watch series 2 if anyone has any answers or insight please. Te below relates to my bike ride.

Firstly, i have Strava on my IP setup to use my Wahoo HR strap, so i guess this is what is used / recorded in the Strava activity results.  Is there any way to disable the apple watch heart rate monitor when using Strava on the watch / IP? Why can't the watch just use/ display the HR from the iphone App and Wahoo HR? Since i am already getting a record from my HR it seems unnecessary to have the watch doing the same and using battery power.

Would pairing my Wahoo HR strap to the watch rather than my IP help? Although as i understand it, if i did so, HR data would not go into the Strava app on the IP but just be displayed on the watch screen right? (am assuming what the apple watch records goes to workout / health but not strava?)

In apple health, Active Calories, after my ride, i saw 180kcal from my Apple Watch, but Strava has 450kcal - does it make sense to set strava as a primary source, since the kcal data with strava, my Wahoo HR would be accurate? How is the discrepancy in kcal accounted for?

Does apple watch / iphone record steps simultaneously while im recording a ride?

Any help much appreciated! Was using all this together for the first time today, hence all the questions.

Thanks!

  • Strava doesn't use HR data to calculate calories your watch calorie number is probably more accurate.

  • Thanks for the response.

Any idea if there is a way ti use strava on the apple watch without the apple watuch HR going? It would extend battery and my Wahoo HR logs to phone app.

  • Hi Jake,

I've started a ticket for you. I hope someone on our tech support team knows the answer for you.

  • Thanks a lot Elle. Just from my perspective, i appreciate you are probably working on a standalone watch app, but it would be great to still have the option to use the watch app as a mirror for the iphone app if the phone is present and also to disable watch HR monitor if the phone is paired with a bluetooth HR strap (plus dispay info from that on the watch). That would really mean optimal battery life / minimal battery use in my eyes.

  • Hi, I would love there to be an option to toggle on/off the watch HRM also.  Starting a ride on my watch gets me about 2 1/2 hours before the watch dies and doesn't hand off to the phone so last time I did this, it only recorded half of my ride.  Alternatively, if I start it from the phone I lose the ability to look at the watch for the in-ride information - :0( Oh and a lock screen like apple's own workout app would be excellent, my gloves are forever interfering with the display!

  • I agree with the last two posts especially. These suggestions would be great! I'd love to be able to track a long day in the bike with the watch just mirroring. That'd be brilliant.
