Swimming support with Apple Watch

Hi I have been given an apple watch for Christmas and I was wondering if there is every going to be able to either  upload swims straight from the apple watch activity app or have the swim feature in the watch addition app

  • Agreed, me and my bike are currently injured so I started swimming again and it is maddening I can't record to Strava on my Apple watch - especially when they just built in the running HR data for Fitness and Freshness. The various swim app platforms are far from Strava's nice UI - please add this functionality, seems like a no brainier value add for long time paying users such as myself.

  • I am waiting patiently for swim synching/tracking with Strava & iwatch 2 workout app too! Would love to see strava to log both my pool(lap counting) and open water swims (GPS).

PLEASE SUPPORT THIS!! I would pay for upgrade!!!

  • Another vote for adding swim support to the Apple Watch!

  • Fully agree with that:

Sorry to keep banging on Strava swimming integration on Apple Watch 2 but at the very very least, if you are not going to develop a native Strava Swim App for the Apple watch would you at least create an option on Strava to upload swim data from the Apple Workout app? At least then we could use Strava to be an aggregator of our workouts.

  • Strava Pro user here... please add swim support to Apple Watch 2 or my $$'s may have to go elsewhere!

  • I'm going to cancel my premium membership as I like all my activity data in one place. At the moment the Apple Watch activity app is the only way to keep Swim, cycle and run data - even though it's a very average app.

It's infuriating as Strava is so much better for run and cycle.

Integrating a swim function in to the Strava Apple Watch interface would make it to the go to premium application for literally millions of triathletes and would also convert many thousands of non premium members who swim in to premium members.

Please provide some clarity on whether this is in the pipeline and if so the time frame.

A lot of people would really appreciate the feedback.

  • Hey guys,

Thanks for chiming in on this topic. We definitely want to support swim, but at the moment it's not on our roadmap. We'll continue to research this feature request and will post any updates here.

  • Thanks for replying Shelby. I'm gonna have to cancel my subscription if this is not implemented soon. At least having a simple swim function will be awesome for the mean time.

  • Same here, and I really didn't want to cancel. But it's £72 a year down the drain without an iWatch swim function.

Even being able to export swims to Strava would suffice. But, I don't think Apple export the data.

  • I discovered strava quite recently and I loved it for tracking running and biking. I immediately upgraded using the one month free trial.
Unfortunately, without beeing able to record swim this is just another incomplete app like so many other. For the moment I swiched back to the fitbit app.

  • If you go to the Activity app on your phone, go to Workouts and select a Pool Swim, there is a Share button which brings up a Share sheet - surely Strava could use this method??

  • If full swim support isn't planned or possible, I would at least like some way to sync my Apple Watch swims into Strava. I use the Strava app for running and biking and it's frustrating that I don't have one place to view all 3 parts of my workouts.

  • @Shelby T Thank you for replying to our requests.  I understand the time and resources may not be available to create a swim module from scratch but could you at least provide a way to upload swim data from the Apple workout app via Apple's upload button? Or maybe work with Swim.com to upload or integrate data into your app?  I'm sure Swim.com would love to partner with you guys - it would give them a lot more exposure to triathletes. And it puts Strava in a position to be the go to app for all triathletes.

  • Sorry Colin and Christopher, we're simply not able to access the Apple Health activity data at this time, where your Apple Watch swims are currently recorded. Strava data can be synced to Apple Health, but data cannot be synced from Apple Health to other programs.

  • I've used a Garmin 735 for all my triathlons and synced all the data to strava for years including swimming. I've just been given an Apple Watch 2 and the native strava app is great but I'm really surprised there's no swim function. Come on Strava, as per comments above triathlon is a massive sport surely you're missing a trick here?

  • Swimming on the Strava Apple Watch app should definitely be made available to paying members. Come on, so many people are asking for swimming to.

  • I'm echoing the comments since Shelby replied... very disappointed swimming integration is not a priority for Strava. It's a big hole in the apps functionality and seems like a no-brainier now that the Apple watch is waterproof.

  • Well as they say, vote with your wallet - I have removed my monthly subscription until swim functionality is built into the Strava app (or the intention to implement is announced). I like Strava quite a bit, but until the service is expanded you'll just have to keep me as a standard member.

  • Hey Everyone,

I just wanted to weigh in on this thread post official response from Strava via @ShelbyT. I'm going to assume that many of you on here are triathletes like myself since you probably run and cycle using Strava on your Apple Watch 2 and naturally want a swim option to make Strava your workout aggregator.  As much as I want Strava to develop this module for the app, I'm sure it takes money and resources that Strava doesn't have right now.  As adaptation of the Apple Watch grows as a true fitness watch, I'm sure it will be more of a priority for Strava.  The Apple Watch is after all the best selling watch of all time.  So I have a couple of suggestions for my fellow triathletes.  If you are serious about your training, get a Garmin Fenix. I know that's not what you (or my wife) wants to hear now, but that's a true triathlete's training watch and they just came out with the Fenix 5.  Garmin Connect works great and it integrates with Strava seamlessly for every type of workout.  If that's just not in your budget, I would suggest that you use Swim.com app.  There's definitely a learning curve to it, but if Strava was to design a swim app module, it would probably look like Swim.com's app.  Like the Garmin Fenix, there is a drill mode (no watch picks up your kick drills) and there is a pace mode.  Best of all, it's free.

If you use Swim.com and want your statistics aggregated, you will have to use the Apple Workout App.  Like Strava, Swim.com will upload into the Workout app (albeit through the Health App).  So you will be able to view your total workout for the day/week/month/year in one place.

If anyone from Strava is still following this thread, I would encourage you to at least please reach out to Swim.com and see if you can't design an API enable data from Swim.com to upload into Strava.  Swim.com says they can integrate with any app that uses the .fit protocol.  Certainly, you guys could make that happen with minimal expense to the company and make most triathletes happy.

    Hope this helps.

  • Very frustrating, I was really holding out when I heard Strava was going to release an update that expanded fitness & freshness to multi-sport athletes. But I was really let down with the half baked version and no ability to get my swims from my Apple Watch 2 onto Strava. This really feels like a big miss on Strava's part, if you're going to cater your update to "multi-sport athletes" should probably make sure it does that.

Basically I'm paying for incomplete data tracking as a premium member. :(

  • It is disturbing to see a great company dropping the ball in front of many of it's users. There is no point in asking "nicely" to make this feature available. Strava it's not clearly listening to its customers.

It is clear this issue should be escalated to Mark Shaw (Strava's CTO) and the engineering team because request for this feature won't go away but some users will be disappointed, downgrade from their paid subscription or simply leave the Strava platform.

If there was reason for me to buy anything from Strava - this was it.

    Sadly, Strava has missed it.

  • Swim support would be awesome. Relative newcomer to swimming and strava & using the Apple watch 2. Pause function and setting pool length is cool and essential but would be so much better being in Strava or at the very least letting strava read from the workouts app and import the data so i don't have to manually enter it!

C'mon strava... Apple normally set a trend but others can better it.

  • I've been doing a bit more reading into alternatives after reading Christopher Go's post and really like the sound of the swim.com app. I'd seriously consider upgrading to a paid membership on Strava if swimming was integrated, but in the mean time I think I'll try out the swim.com app with the myswimpro app. Here are 2 good reads on these alternatives:
