Feedback for the updated Strava feed

We are excited to share with you a project that we've been working on for the past year - a new way to experience the Strava feed.

The feedback you've been sharing with us about better ways to sort and filter the feed has not gone unnoticed. The feed fuels the power of our community and is where athletes inspire and interact with each other. We discovered that on average Strava athletes miss almost 60% of the content in their feed every day. Strava's new feed presents a non-chronological ordering of activities based on characteristics we think are most valuable to you.

Here's how it works:

When you refresh your feed, any content you haven't seen before will be at the top of the feed, above activities you've already seen. The order in which these new items appear is based on a learning algorithm that uses your past behavior to gauge whether you'll find content interesting. Comment a lot on your sister's activities? Her items will be ranked highly for you. Your friend just ran their best time for a 10K? That will get promoted as well. The algorithm will continue to evolve over time, learning as you use it. We won't hide any activities from you - they'll all be in your feed, just in a different order designed to ensure you don't miss the items that matter most to you. You can read more on our blog.

We will be slowly releasing the new feed over the coming weeks, along with close monitoring of performance and your feedback. You are welcome to add to the discussion below or contact us directly by submitting a ticket.

  • What a joke this change is. I've voiced my displeasure at this change on EVERY social media site they use. There's pages upon pages on negative comments about this change. It's clearly HATED by all but they aren't lisenting and just pushing it through anyway. I've been a premium member for 3 years and I've recently cancelled it. Maybe they will listen when the money dries up? We can only hope. You're just making it easier and easier for a rival company to make a better app. The only thing you have going for yourself is the segments, and that's can be easily changed with a big user base swap

  • Not a fan. Please give us the option of a chronological feed.

  • This is Strava - it is catering to some of the most neurotic people on the planet.  Feeding activities not in chronological order is too disruptive to our existence - this is just stress inducing chaos. Sure a sort option might be nice so we may further analyze but this is just nonsense!!  Please restore order!!

  • You have no data on my friendships or what I find interesting.

Just because I looked at something historically does not predict that I want to look at it into the future!!!

How are people supposed to broaden their horizons and learn about different people in the world if evil corporations like yourself just continue to reinforce their historical behaviour and keep "them" amongst themselves.

Yet another platform using "algorithums" to tell us what we like and segregating society..... And just when cycling was starting to bring them together again.

  • Strava are obviously changing their pricing model, moving away from the premium membership model and instead paving the way to have promoted posts. They must have been expecting this backlash and they don't care that we're all cancelling our premium memberships because it's in line with their new strategy. That's the only reason I can think of for them to do this, it's also consistent with the other facebook-isation that's been going on for the past year or two.

  • Frankly, I would keep it simple. All these learning algorithms are hip but is it really necessary? All what I would like to see as a minimum are decent filter functions. Show me only activities of selected person(s), make routes, joining challenges notes, even comments in/visible. What do you think about an extension of the existing filter? Beside I'm following & My Activities & list of Clubs adding e.g. Select Follower, Activities Only ....

I always loved your clearly organized UI. so please don't screw it up!

  • I don't like it. Would it be that much harder to give the option of just having it chronologically?

  • This is crazy.  I came across this because I thought I had done something to screw up my feed.  I would have never thought it would be a 'feature'!

As previously stated - we dont like it when companies think they know best for us.

from tex murphy -Add flags:  1. do not publish my challenges.  2. do not show me anyone else's challenges. 3. Remove zwift / stationary rides

  • This new feed is very frustrating, please at least give us the option to go chronological, or the Strava feed is going to become unworkable for many of us.

  • I am in the unfortunate group of people you have already rolled your new 'feature' out to. To be absolutely frank here, it sucks!

I do not want your algorithm to decide what it thinks I want to see first or more of. I am well capable of deciding that myself! I only follow a select group of people because I am interested in seeing what they are up to and to follow their efforts. Since you switched the feed, I was forced to unfollow a few accounts (mainly pro riders) as their rides and activities would always be on top and rides of my friends got buried and swallowed.

At least give an option to switch back to a chronological feed in the drop down... but what am I asking here. You still haven't managed to let us choose the 'team' on our profile sites we would like to ride for....

  • Please please put the activities back in chronological order - the new way is beyond irritating. If you insist on the new order please make it optional.

  • A much better idea would be a toggle between this and the traditional chronological view as well well as toggles to display/hide virtual rides, commutes, different activity types.

  • Is there an option to continue viewing the feed in chronological order? Personally, I much prefer to see things in chronological order rather than the jumbled mess that the algorithm creates. If you could make it possible to view the feed either way, I'd be very grateful.

  • Oh my god how do I unsubscribe from getting emails about new comments on this thread? It is a daily reminder of how stupid this new feature is and my negative feelings toward it just grow and grow.

  • "We are monitoring your comments and will regroup to see how this feature is doing before we proceed."

I think it's pretty clear how the new "feature" is doing.

  • Please keep the Chronological order as the default option.  You already got rid of the daily email, now you want to jumble up my feed.  The closeness of my friend is not defined by the number of comments or KOMs.

  • To those trying to unsubscribe emails from this thread:  When logged in to the web support page, click on your name in the upper right. Then click "My activities", then click on the "Following" button.  You should see a list of discussions, including this one.  Below the discussion title is an "Unfollow" link.  That should do what you want.

P.S. I'm not connected to Strava at all, though I (used to) love the app and have been an evangelist for years and a paying subscriber.  I also contributed to this thread - don't like the new feed - and my blood is boiling hotter and hotter with all the emails I receive! I simply don't understand why Strava won't respond...  So depressing.

  • Are you serious, Strava? I like looking at data and statistics. Strava gives me a place to collect my data points, order them and analyse them. Data and statistics provide order... chronological is a perfectly acceptable method of ordering activities.

Now, the order of activities is, from what I can tell, RANDOM. This serves no purpose at all.

Unless you're able to tell me what I'm going to do next month; or how well my friends did at Ride London in 2019.

Please put it back to a sensible order. Or at least give us the option of a sensible order. Why did you even take that option away? :(

  • Want option to have the option of keeping the chronological order. Not a fan of new update. Being able to upload photos from webpage much more a priority than having Strava perfrom like Facebook. Am a paying customer.... at the moment.

  • Bring back chronological order on the feed, or as a minimum make it an option. Clearly the community does not like this change.

  • I'd like to filter out notifications about challenges and awards etc, and also to hide commutes and Zwift activities.  Otherwise I just end up unfollowing persistent "Challenge" riders and those who publish the same commute every day...

  • This is hopeless, please give us an option to view chronological. I will just stop watching the feed as long as its unsorted, and even consider stop using Strava. As far as I'm concerned you might just have used rand () and not developed this shit for a year+.

  • Thanks for doing my thinking for me. It's good to have you deciding for me what I want to see, instead of me deciding for myself. Can you please tell me where i should ride tomorrow. I am also wondering when I should next go to the toilet, and I hope you can advise.

Don't allow a chronological order option under any circumstances. Ignore your users!

  • Here is an example of my current feed. Someone who I follow joined 10 clubs, which is perfectly fine for him to do. However when this gets dumped into my feed, along with the Suggested Athletes bit and multiple entries for someone else joining a bunch of challenges it really messes thing up.

Strava this is why "Strava athletes miss almost 60% of the content in their feed every day". It's not because the feed is chronological it's because of all the non-workout cruft in the feed.

Please just give us a way to filter out the stuff we don't want to see. An extremely simple solution to the problem.

  • Not a fan of the non-chronological feed.  It's too confusing and feels disjointed when scrolling through.  Sometimes I glance at my friends' activities in passing but then want to go back and look at them in more detail when I have time later in the day.  It is too difficult to find them the second time because Strava "thinks" I have already seen them.  A chronological feed makes it much easier to scroll through and find the key activities I want to review.

I also agree with the other sentiment expressed throughout the comments about how it would be nice to turn off the Zwift rides or to be able to mute certain people we follow.
