Feedback for the updated Strava feed

We are excited to share with you a project that we've been working on for the past year - a new way to experience the Strava feed.

The feedback you've been sharing with us about better ways to sort and filter the feed has not gone unnoticed. The feed fuels the power of our community and is where athletes inspire and interact with each other. We discovered that on average Strava athletes miss almost 60% of the content in their feed every day. Strava's new feed presents a non-chronological ordering of activities based on characteristics we think are most valuable to you.

Here's how it works:

When you refresh your feed, any content you haven't seen before will be at the top of the feed, above activities you've already seen. The order in which these new items appear is based on a learning algorithm that uses your past behavior to gauge whether you'll find content interesting. Comment a lot on your sister's activities? Her items will be ranked highly for you. Your friend just ran their best time for a 10K? That will get promoted as well. The algorithm will continue to evolve over time, learning as you use it. We won't hide any activities from you - they'll all be in your feed, just in a different order designed to ensure you don't miss the items that matter most to you. You can read more on our blog.

We will be slowly releasing the new feed over the coming weeks, along with close monitoring of performance and your feedback. You are welcome to add to the discussion below or contact us directly by submitting a ticket.

  • Where did the very first post go, it had over a hundred votes and it seems to have dissapeared? Is someone editing out posts?

EDIT: the first post has come back again, looks like it was edited to add some detail and took a while to repopulate it.

And, no response at all from Strava either here, on their blog or Facebook, or perhaps they did, and the algorithm decided it wasn't popular so buried it somewhere...

  • chronological order please with the option of filtering out challenges / route creation / suggested athletes etc . I do not want you (Strava) to decide what is appropriate for me to view.

  • Hate it. I will cancel my premium subscription if we don't get the option to sort it chronologically in the next month. Surely you can't ignore the masses of people in this comment thread alone asking for the same thing? It's such a shame.

  • NOOOOOOOO! Leave it alone!

Having got to the end of the third page of comments and voting on them all, it appears that over 90% DO NOT WANT this feature FORCED ON THEM !

It ain't broke and don't need fixin'! PLEASE LISTEN TO YOUR MEMBERS! ;-)

Garmin Connect is VERY under rated and gives much more info than STRAVA - It's starting to look even more appealing now!

  • Unsurprisingly, your system doesn't even work.

Best mate just completed his very first marathon. You buried his activity underneath a bunch of random ones from people I don't even know, including a 6k slow jog with a description in a foreign language, some pro runner using an eliptical machine, someone on a casual sunday bike ride, etc.

Just like Instagram's algorithm, it's doing the EXACT OPPOSITE and putting the absolute least interesting things to me at the top, and pushing my friends important posts to the bottom.

  • Really don't like the new format. I have been on it for a while (apparently I was part of the trial) and still don't like it. I have just emailed support to see if I can have it changed to the standard feed, or if there can be an option to switch between the two and I was told that I couldn't and that the change was done so I don't miss anything. The only time I miss things is with this new feed set up. I was also told to post here, so I am. My wife and I have been premium members for some time but I've stopped that. I don't want to give my money to a company that tells me what I want, even after I have explained to them 3 times now that it's not.

  • After being a Premium member for the last for years I've just cancelled my subscription as a result of the recent unwanted change to the Strava feed, I suggest others do the same, money talks!!

  • Tim B: That first post was me. I edited it to add something (using proper "Edit: blah blah" etiquette) but apparently when you edit something on here, it gets sent straight to the bottom instead of remaining where it was. The comments go in...chronological order based on last edit. Zing.

  • Your new out-of-order feed sucks.  For example, when my friends or pros do multiple activities in a single day or even over a couple days, their activities are now shown out of order - if at all.  Makes it very difficult to follow along, and then I end up having to see activities in the feed again and again - while trying to find what I didn't see first!?!?!   Please stop trying to emulate FB/IG/TW -- those are fine for discovery - but in Strava, I want to see what my friends are doing - in the order they are doing them!!!

At least, give us a sticky option to keep the chronological feed.  No excuses that it's "too hard" - you already have that functionality !!!  Aside from this and the new white background, I have loved Strava!

  • I agree that this is a stupid idea. Strava has become another Facebook -popularity website. Please DO NOT implement this program change. Also remove the challenge notifications as I consider them spam. I'll be using Strava as only a logbook when I change my privacy setting if so.

  • Anyone else notice this post was made on February 8th but no one started commenting until April 6th?? Hmm something not right here.. also why does Elle respond to tons of other mundane discussions but this one NO ONE from strava has said a word, other than users reporting that they receive a canned response email that states the change cannot be undone and that it's for their best interest they made the change.... Wow

  • Please give the option for chronological order - your choice of what you think is important to me is so way off.........either provide options on how to view or turn this random feed back to how it was please.

  • Thanks Strava, since this was rolled out, I am now receiving fewer kudos than ever. I suppose my runs are buried at the bottom of everyone's feeds...

Or missing altogether – because when I look at my own feed, it doesn't even make sense. I've got activities from yesterday well above activities from today that I would consider much more "epic." Having no pattern at all is the worst possible outcome, it's so uninviting.

Like others, I'm having a hard time imagining continuing to pay for premium. I'm so sad, I've recommended (arm-twisted) Strava to so many friends and colleagues, because I really enjoyed it. And now ... I'm 100% meh.

  • HATE IT. Stop @^$*&^$ telling me what you want me to see. I pay for this service and should you decide to leave it as is then I too can choose to leave it. Don't #*$% with your customers.

  • I am also unhappy with the new feed. Strava isn't Facebook. It can't be, nor should it try. Please at least give the option to view the feed chronologically. Also consider making that the default.

  • This new way I'm being forced to view my feed is terrible! Rather than scroll through friend's rides for a particular day, I now have to scroll though rides which might not even be on the same day!
PLEASE, at least give us the option to view chronologically rather than forcing this new way on us!!
It must be fairly easy to do - you give us the option to view these comments by most recent or top rated!
I look forward to seeing this option soon! Thanks in advance.

  • Well, it looks like this is has gone down really well...

Honestly, this is an idea that would of best been put on the back burner, there are more important things you could of been working on, and this is not one of them.

  • Sorry Elle and team, but this does not sit well with me.
I love everything about Strava and have been a Premium member for about 4 years now. Even though paid membership does not affect the feed, not renewing it might send more of a message than this comment.  Or maybe not, but worth a shot.

Strava is the one app out there that has not been butchered by algorithms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and for that, I love it.  Don't send it the wrong way please.

Give us an option to opt out and keep things chronological.

  • This is exactly why I stop useing Instagram. If you are doing this, at least leave us users an opt so we can chose to keep our feed chronological.

  • I have been subjected to this format for a while now (apparently I was part of the trial also, thanks for asking by the way Strava). THIS JUST DOES NOT WORK!!! Always on the top of my feed is a guy that I follow who rides 120+ km's a day (basically the same course), a friend who walks the dog and takes a series of boring selfies along the way (please don't tell them so) and ZWIFT rides from every man and his dog (that I don't find interesting in the least and they don't have a dog). As for everyone else, because your algorithm deems these three examples as 'what I must see', all else is scattered randomly down the feed page in no apparent order. I scroll down a few lines and lose interest in utter frustration! It seems ironic as on this discussion page (at the top of the comments) you have a 'sort by' button. How about work on that for our feeds? I LOATH THIS NEW FORMAT!!! It would be just plain simpler to just filter out and sort certain people/activities (ZWIFT included) for ourselves...

  • Justin Kremer - yeah, your post came back after a while. It seems that new posts get published all at once when maybe the feed refreshes at some given point, your edited post came back at the same time as well as a stack of notification emails from very unhappy people.

i can't for the life of me understand why someone would think ordering a feed like this would be a good idea, it's the same with all social media, used to scroll down til I saw something I'd seen before and know I was done, now it's such a random jumble of stuff that I lose interest and don't bother, the Acivity Feed is the same.

For all those having their feed spammed by people they don't really know walking their dog, I'd suggest stop giving people kudos, unfollow everyone you don't actually care about, unfollow all the Pro's, unfollow anyone that does monthly challenges that spam your feed, perhaps cancel your Premium membership and see how it goes. Hopefully Strava can see that they've made a mistake (unless they've done this for monetary gain and don't actually care about the users) and change it back to the way it was.

  • I have now changed my annual premium membership to monthly to give me more options as this junk is rolled out.  I have also weeded out all but 10 of the people I follow. Any others are in Strava clubs I can check. I hope Strava doesn't add people to my feed that I am not following.  I suppose that will be next, deciding who I should follow. I don't know why it is so difficult to give us a chronological choice.

  • Strava shouldn't be deciding how we want our feed to look, especially as a paying premium subscriber. I hate the new feed and would like the option of getting back to chronological order.

  • Please give us the option to go back to the chronological feed, which is what I prefer. The top stories function is rubbish.
