Feedback for the updated Strava feed

We are excited to share with you a project that we've been working on for the past year - a new way to experience the Strava feed.

The feedback you've been sharing with us about better ways to sort and filter the feed has not gone unnoticed. The feed fuels the power of our community and is where athletes inspire and interact with each other. We discovered that on average Strava athletes miss almost 60% of the content in their feed every day. Strava's new feed presents a non-chronological ordering of activities based on characteristics we think are most valuable to you.

Here's how it works:

When you refresh your feed, any content you haven't seen before will be at the top of the feed, above activities you've already seen. The order in which these new items appear is based on a learning algorithm that uses your past behavior to gauge whether you'll find content interesting. Comment a lot on your sister's activities? Her items will be ranked highly for you. Your friend just ran their best time for a 10K? That will get promoted as well. The algorithm will continue to evolve over time, learning as you use it. We won't hide any activities from you - they'll all be in your feed, just in a different order designed to ensure you don't miss the items that matter most to you. You can read more on our blog.

We will be slowly releasing the new feed over the coming weeks, along with close monitoring of performance and your feedback. You are welcome to add to the discussion below or contact us directly by submitting a ticket.

  • As per many other comments, I want things in chronological order. That way I DON'T miss a thing. Having an algorithm decide what I find interesting is not what I am after. I'll decide that for myself. If Strava insists on forcing this on users then as per many other comments provide it optionally and allow us to view chronological order. A step backwards. :(

  • HATE IT. Stop @^$*&^$ telling me what you want me to see. I pay for this service and should you decide to leave it as is then I too can choose to leave it. Don't #*$% with your customers.

  • Stop taking control of me!

  • I'm definitely not a fan of this. It only creates confusion. At least add an option to toggle back to chronological order?

  • It sounded a lot like spin (and now appears gone??) the ponytails in the marketing department are defending their great idea.

Funny, if you go back and read the founders story it's because they wanted to keep abreast of what each other were doing. That's all we are asking too.

I do not want an algorithm that will 'learn' what I want to see - I already know! Chronological feed.

  • Thanks for making strava much worse.... In the past I worked out who was out in the morning or afternoon or evening by scrolling down and it was simple and dare I saw logical and had sense to it, now it is entirely random... even my own rides.... rubbish.  I like to be able to see who was out and what people have done in a chronological order.... I don't care about what kudos/koms or whatever they have.

Basically it's rubbish on facebook and its worse on strava.

  • I don't want this change either. If there is a demand somewhere out there then make it an opt-in option.
A much better idea would be to keep the chronological order but using the finish time and also enable us to create a favourites list to enable a quick review of those we're interested in most.

  • Please keep the Chronological order as the default option.  You already got rid of the daily email, now you want to jumble up my feed.  The closeness of my friend is not defined by the number of comments or KOMs.

  • It's unfortunate Strava you feel like you must show us what you feel is important to us.  I want to give friends Kudos if they're riding whether they have a big or small day...epic or not.  Not everyone has the opportunity to ride big days everyday and what about the new riders who are just getting out for the first few times?  Isn't it only fair we get to see their rides and encourage them by giving them Kudos?  I understand you have new algorithms you want to play with but please give us the option to sort by newest.

    Thanks

    Chris

  • I've literally stopped reading this stupid feed. All I use it for now is to track my rides. It just makes no fu&#%^ sense. I can't follow it. Someone should be FIRED over this mess.

  • Hi Elle

I've already made a comment on this thread but I see that still nothing's been done with regards to the new feed since then and I'm still frustrated by a lack of even an option to list my friends' rides in a chronological order. Are you even listening to your customers and users? Judging by your reply on the 13th April, it seems not.

Could I ask how you might like it if your email provider decided to start ordering your emails by 'what emails they thought you might like to see' rather than in a date order? I think you'd be a bit miffed!

Please start listening to the users who you've decided to thrust this new feed upon.

    Thanks.

  • Yes, I saw the newest update, and David is right, these are obviously related. Despite the way the Strava are spinning it, it is definitely another way for them to monetize the platform at the expense of usability.

  • This is not required - not desirable even.

    Chronological is absolutely fine.

All we need is the ability to filter out challenges and commutes.

  • "We are monitoring your comments and will regroup to see how this feature is doing before we proceed"

3 months after Strava posted saying the above, and they clearly haven't took note of the comments they are monitoring...

  • I'd like to say the new algorithm based feed is ace.

But it's cack. But seeings as you thought it was a "good idea", could you make the web portal green and red with flashing yellow bits so we can "journey" and "experiance-alize" cack 1990's style?

Why not, eh? You must be pretty game for any hair-brained, guff blown idea.

Genuine question - did your project development team ever work for Nokia?

  • Please have an option to set so I can look at my feed the way I want, which is in chronological order. I see many other comments here asking for the same thing. Though I do like the social aspect of Strava, Strava is not Facebook! And Facebook has the option to order your page by most recent or top stories. Please don't force this on everyone without options!

  • We are here mainly for sports not for social media. Please improve those features not Social Media ones. Like options to remove non-GPS activities, challenges etc. And leave us an option to have chronological order. If Strava goes too much into SoMe direction there will be another "strava" for real athletes.

  • Please keep it chronological or at least give us an option to do so. It's Strava, not Facebook.

  • NO what crazy person gave you feedback that his would be a "great" idea. Have you only spoken to Facebook and Instagram engineers?
Give users the options of how THEY want to see posts displayed. I pay you to use this service and could quite happily take my money elsewhere if you stick with this terrible methodology.

  • As a runner, I'd like to be able to only see runs from my friends, not their cycling activities.

I am sure many cyclists would like the opposite as well :)

  • Please leave us chose to show activities still chronologically. Don't jump on the Facebook/Twitter train!

  • "Please give us an algorithm based feed like Facebook" said no one ever! 62 comments so far appear unanimously opposed to this idea.

If you proceed without offering the option of reverting to a chronological option surely you are just admitting that this is not driven by user feedback but the need to promote commercial partners. Will commercial income replace the income from Premium members like me who cancel their subscriptions?

  • Tried it and I can't tell you just How. Much. I. Hate. this!!! - and I'm not usually a hater. Please, please, please let chronological be an option! I'm losing friends' workouts. My workouts are shorter and not spectacular, so maybe others don't care, but unless they're mu husband, I'll disappear from everyone else's feeds, too. This makes me so sad and yeah, I'm likely not to bother renewing as a premium member with the feed like this. :(

  • What if my preferred order is chronological?

You are rewarding people for being lazy and not taking the time to scroll back up for a few minutes to see all activities.

  • I wonder if Strava employees all have 100+ highly active friends and think this feature is needed...I would be shocked if I'm not a "normal" user, with 35 friends, only 10 of whom post an activity each day. It is no problem to sort through those in chronological order!!! Strava: run the numbers on your users. Realize most don't have an issue with scrolling through the very few posts they see each day!

Chronological order option like Facebook would work but the new feed does my head in!!

  • No no no! How do you know what characteristics are most important to me? You didn't ask me! Let me tell you now - chronological order is what I want. As for what's "cool" you should understand that what is cool for one can easily be annoying to another. I know that what you propose will annoy me no end. Chronological order must stay at least as an alternative.
